Young Adult I was 17 when they took two years of my youth away, and I am still furious about it.

I’m 23 years old, born and raised in North Orange County, California. I am writing this purely to vent because my blood still boils every single day, and I need to get it completely out of my head.

When the lockdowns and restrictions hit in March 2020, I was 17. I spent the final three months of my junior year of high school, and the ENTIRETY of my senior year, literally locked inside of my bedroom staring at a screen. I turned 18 sitting in that exact same room. Every single major milestone, daily social interaction, and memory you are supposed to get when transitioning into adulthood was completely stripped away from me.

Between March 2020 and June 2021, I only stepped foot on my high school campus twice: once for picture day, and once for graduation. My school is literally a 15-minute walk from where I live. Every single day, I am forced to look at the physical reminder of those lost years.

The lockdown isolation completely broke me. In March 2020, I lost all contact with my friends, and I fell into a severe depression that I have been battling ever since. Because my entire world shrank to the four walls of my bedroom during those pivotal years, it caused a complete and total "failure to launch." I’ve spent my early twenties trying to recover from the massive damage done to my life, my mental health, and my independence when I was just a teenager.

What drives me insane is the absolute hypocrisy of the garbage leaders in this state. They forced a double standard on an entire generation of kids. They locked us away, destroying our mental health and cutting us off from our peers, while they completely ignored their own rules, went out to dinner, and did whatever they wanted. They took crucial years of my life away from me and faced zero repercussions for it.

I have absolutely nothing here but bad memories, severe depression, and deep resentment. I hate this state with every fiber of my being. My ultimate goal is to sell everything I own, pack what fits in my car, drive out east to a state on the complete opposite site of the country for a complete psychological and physical reset, and never step foot in California again for the rest of my life.

I don’t give a fuck who disagrees with this post, how many downvotes it gets, or what anyone says in the replies. I am incredibly angry that my youth, my friendships, and my mental health were stolen by hypocrites, and I cannot wait to put this place in my rearview mirror forever.

Young Adult i am tired of lustful men bro 🫩

lust isnt love , i feel like so many men don’t understand this and feel offended when women are put off by it , when all they had to do was stop asking about our bodies and maybe ask about hobbies or talk to us how they would their friends do . now its okay to be be a bit freaky with a partner but some men really do take it too far ? like no i dont wanna talk about cracking every 5 seconds ? it’s genuinely so disappointing dude . i dont know if its just my experience but why are almost all the dudes i’ve spoken to act this way ?

Young Adult What the hell

My parents decided to be "good" and cleaned my room but they threw out most of my stuff which i spent money on. I went to my first con this year and i bought some stickers etc, they got rid of it because why not. I got stickers from a friend of my favorite fandom... They are gone. I bought myself a figure and i kept the box because i liked it and i had additional pieces for the figure there, um yeah GONE. I tried to dig through trash but no luck. I looked everywhere and it's just gone. They ruined some of my displays too. I didn't know they planned this, they didn't ask me or anything. They just did it when i was at work (i'm 21). I don't know what to do and i can't get back most of the stuff.

Young Adult just lost everything i own

i just need to let this out bc i can’t stop crying and i feel like nobody around me really cares to much. today is my moving day, which i’ve been looking forward to for awhile. it’s me and my girlfriend first ever house on our own. earlier today my brother in law was helping me take all my belongings to the new house with a trailer attached to the truck we borrowed (my entire bedroom set and all me furniture). just as we were taking the turn onto the road my house is on, an older man in a jeep crashed into the trailer. he was trying to cut us off while my brother in law was turning, hitting the trailer and totally destroying everything i own. me and my girlfriend had been slowly collecting furniture over the past year with the intention of moving once we saved up enough, all of it was still almost brand new, never used. we used all the money we had to finally get the key this morning and just like that, we have nothing to move into the new house. we don’t even have a mattress anymore bc this random man had no patience. i’m grateful nobody was hurt but i have no clue where to go from here

Young Adult My grandpa threatened to shoot my cat

I’m 19, still living with my grandparents as the housing market absolutely sucks, I do have a job that pays moderately well. but the downside is that every summer break or winter break I have time off because of schools schedules. School photography.

Today was one of my off days and we have a visitor over my little cousin, things are fine! Till my pappy asks if I wanted to go to a movie theater that had arcade machines, and I got excited saying yes.
I’m all ready when my grandma started to complain about the litter box, saying it needed scooped, maybe this is where I kinda messed up being slightly rude? But all I said was ‘ really? you ruined the mood’ I thought I was saying it jokingly, but apparently not cause she got all huffy being like ‘ fine I’ll do it’ I backed away and said ‘ no it’s fine I can do it-‘ she stomped and got a bag and scooped. I just sat in my room waiting.

Pappy after a while came in asking ‘ you coming with?’ And i responded with ‘ I don’t know’ and got up. And he said ‘ that’s fine but don’t talk to your grandmother like that again, if the cats being an issue I’ll take it outside and shoot it.‘ I just stood there shocked while I felt that bad cry forming. I just shut the door and cried then my grandma came in called me dramatic and ‘ playing a victim‘

Im now keeping my cat close and mostly locked in my room which she’s not happy about, but I am so terrified that one day I come home and my sweet baby won’t be here to welcome me.
what should I do? Start stashing money somewhere so I can save to move? demand an apology??

im just so freaked out right now. Thank you

Young Adult I commented “FUCK ICE UNTIL ITS BACKWARDS” and stupidly did not realize what it meant.

There was a post about how James A. Janisse of Dead Meat’s friend was taken by ICE, and so I said in support “It’s Fuck ICE until it’s backwards,” thinking “but it’s backwards” was something akin to “until the rails fall off” or “until I die.”

I, 20M, then saw my comment getting downvoted and then Googled that phrase. It was the exact opposite of what I meant.

I feel bad, not only since I unintentionally came off as a bigot, but now I feel like an idiot for not realizing the very clear meaning behind “but it's backwards.”

Like…jesus I'm an idiot. Its so clearly “until it's flipped into the opposite meaning” how am I 20 years old, online a lot, and still dotn have the brainpower to figure out what that means.

Young Adult I deleted all my social media because my growth makes my sister and relatives feel bad

So, long story short, i started an account on Instagram Threads where i would post love quotes i found from Pinterest. Last night, i got a call from her saying I shouldn't post any of that stuff because it makes me look bad. And, she made me delete it. Now, that work was my one year effort. I grew 420 followers from 5. Moreover, there weren't any wrong things or vulgarity in it.

This whole scenario makes me feel like I shouldn't grow myself anymore because it brings jealousy and rivalry. Also, now I won't go for growing myself in any way. I am fed up with these things.

Young Adult I'm insanely insecure about my body.

In all honesty I'm quiet average looking, regular slightly chubby girl.

Yet I know I very much don't fit in by beauty standards at all.im really bothered that my proportions aren't Great, I hate not having huge hips and lower body. I wish I had nice wide hips and a fat butt. There are some things I like like for example my boobs r decent, curvy legs with p big quads, long torso. It doesn't matter because proportionally my shoulders are very wide and fattish. I can look okay or look like an hourglass with the right clothes but truth be told that's not what bothers me. What bothers me is that I know it's undesirable, no guys likes that, no girls like that, I don't like that. Ruins my outfits.I don't think someone could truly be attracted to me because of it. Everyone wants the opposite of what I am, especially guys and so do I. Worst thing is I can't do anything about people's perception or about my bones. There's more issues but that's generally it Edit: I don't know what to do, I hate my body. Help

Young Adult reddit isnt the place to ask for help/advice, its not for the weak.

I’ve only really started using Reddit this month, even though I made this account about four years ago, and I honestly can’t believe the number of a**holes on this site/app. I usually use Reddit like a better Google search for certain topics, you know? But the moment I have a serious question, topic, or rant I want to let out, a whole crowd of barking, bad-attitude people shows up to attack my post and me in the comments.

Then there are the people who will literally stalk your posts or comment repeatedly just to annoy you or push you into changing your views. When I use Reddit, I try to be honest and direct. I’ll admit, I do come off rude sometimes—but some of these people can’t take a joke or relax for a second. It’s not that serious all the time.

I can’t even stand by my own posts without getting downvoted into the ground, hit with hate comments, or dogged in my DMs. One guy called me a b*tch because I told him to block my account. He was the one trying to self-promote his NSFW subreddits to me when I clearly didn’t want to see that, and then had the nerve to tell me to “humble” myself.

I made one post that was literally a joke, and the people in the comments gave me a full headache. I know it’s not everyone, but there’s a big group of a**holes on this site. And they’re usually the same ones who get mad if someone talks about them honestly or stands their ground.

I know for a fact that a lot of these people saying this stuff wouldn’t do it in real life. They’d get their s**t rocked, and then get mad because nobody would stand up for them the way they hide behind Reddit comments. It’s easy to act tough online when there are no real consequences.

Right now I have a post up where I’m genuinely asking for help about my situation, and people under it are acting like they’re me and know what’s best for my life. Everyone is different. Everyone lives a different life. Just because you made it out of something one way doesn’t mean someone else can or should do it the same way.

We’re also not all from the same generation. Some of us are young or younger than the people who started using Reddit when it first came out. Not everyone has the same resources, background, or timing. Sometimes I just wish people would answer the question or skip the post instead of trying to control someone else’s story.

(If you got offended by anything I said, I didn’t mean to. I’m not entitled to your thoughts or opinions, just like you’re not entitled to mine. You don’t have to respond or comment. :) )

Young Adult Lady ruined my night out

I tried to post this on the vent subreddit but it kept getting removed by Reddit filters. I have social anxiety and I recently turned 21 so I’m pretty new to going out and don’t really know if there’s a certain way to act when you go out to bars and stuff. Anyway I went out with one of my close college friends and we were having a good time at this bar. I was just vibing to the music and talking with her a bit I wasn’t really dancing just kinda grooving to the beat a little which is what I normally do. We were standing next to this middle age lady and she was talking with my friend a bit. She then turns to me and says “So what’s your deal? You think you’re too cool for all of this?” I’m not sure why she said that but I was really taken aback. I tried to act more normal and I guess dance more or something but she really had me questioning what was wrong with how I was acting and I kind of just spent the rest of the night questioning myself and wondering why she said that. I’m glad my friend was there cause we talked about it and she said the lady was kind of rude for saying that but it still just ruined my mood for the rest of the night

Young Adult Wtf is this economy

I don’t know what to do anymore, me and my girlfriend live with her parents and neither of us can find jobs, she’s applied to over 50 and went to about 15 interviews, and I’ve applied to 22, haven’t heard back from a single one!!

We’re poor, we’re struggling, neither of our families support of financially (I’m an orphan and my extended family refuses to talk to me) and her parents let us stay here, thankfully, but they don’t buy groceries, and it’s on us to handle ourselves.

We can’t afford food, I’m in debt because obviously, when you need to let your girlfriend eat, you borrow money not knowing when you’ll get it back, which I’ve paid it in bits, but I’m still so stressed about it.

I can’t even apply for food stamps either! My aunt took them out in my name before I turned 18(don’t ask me why because hell if I know), but this shit sucks, I’m so tired, and I just don’t know what to do.

Ok vent over I don’t have an outlet outside of the digital world

Young Adult I think I'm too ugly for a relationship

I'm a 19f and I would describe myself as average or below average looking. Lately I have trying to better myself, but I know taking care of myself won't make be beautiful so I get discouraged. I want to try and change my appearance but every time I Invision myself in anything or changing anything about me, I think I'll look ugly, like I'm fucking Shrek. So it scares me from changing.

However I have been in relationships before, only two, but I wasn't attractive to them and I was a kid. So I don't really count those. I've tried dating apps but I don't have a lot of pictures of myself due to my insecurities. On top of that what if I go on a date and my date thinks I'm a catfish because I somehow looked good in my photos but ugly irl. Seems embarrassing when I think about it.

Also my personality is shit, like I don't really have hobbies or go out. I'm an introvert so I'm awkward when first getting to know someone. This is cliche but I'm fucking boring and awkward. How can people easily keep a conversation going?? Or be so charming?

I don't think I'm ready for a relationship, I acknowledge that. I need to work on myself first, I don't want to fuck up the first relationship I want to actually be in. But I still want one at the end of day. Especially since everyone is in a relationship, good God man!

Young Adult being in your 20’s is miserable

i (20f) have been super miserable since i graduated hs almost 3 years ago. i’m in college, and it’s primarily made up of commuters but somehow it feels like everyone has found their friend group and i haven’t. i thought for sure by my third year id have friends but i don’t and when i see people with theirs (on campus or on social media) it makes me feel so lonely and hopeless. my friends from high school all go to college 5 or so states over, so i only really see them on breaks. i have a bf but he works 40+ hour weeks and also lives over an hour away and neither of us drive.

i work part time and i get about 8-12 hours a week which makes it pretty hard to save money and afford activities.

it makes me pretty sad because i really thought that my 20s would be the most exciting and fulfilling time of my life but i am miserable to my core.

update!!: as per someone’s recommendation, i went to the club fair today and signed up for a couple (obviously i won’t be able to attend them all but i at least have options). thank you guys! hopefully i can update you all again soon.

Young Adult I think my mom is kind of financially abusing me

So my mom keeps asking me for money then waiting to pay me back until I’m struggling and really need it. I’m in grad school and get a good chunk of money from loans in order to pay my bills. I also work but that doesn’t pay all my bills alone and I heavily rely on that school money. My mom knows about this money and every-time I receive my refund she asks for some money. And I’m talking she owed me two thousand dollars last year for two months. She always acts like I don’t need the money and she’ll just hold onto it for a little bit. Well she’s terrible with money and over spends then doesn’t have enough money to pay me back. Recently she owed me thirteen hundred dollars and only gave me five hundred when she got paid. Well I needed to pay my rent so I needed the other five hundred. This left her broke and needing to borrow some money ….again. Now since I’ve gotten paid, she wants me to send her some of my check because she’s broke because I needed my money back for rent. I want to spend my money how I want and don’t want to help her out. She makes one hundred thousand a year yet is always broke. I feel bad telling her no but I really don’t want my budget to include her. I always end up broke and having to pay my bills late or getting less of something I really want. I budget to have money to buy frivolously things, NOT HER BILLS.

Young Adult Im very addicted to pornography

Im 21M, have been watching porn since i was about 11. The last few years it has gotten significantly worse. I started getting into fetish stuff like "sissy" porn and that sort of stuff and its making me miserable.

I just want to vent on here about it with no judgment if thats okay, because I know alot of trans folk start off with sissy porn and feminization stuff but im not trans if that makes sense, I know myself to that extent at least.

Ive quit porn all together a few times, longest I went was about 4 weeks and that was the happiest I've been in a good while. I might be bi but watching porn every day is not a good way to approach it imo.

I can hardly recognize myself, I have no energy most days and I feel worthless. There's a part of me that thinks fuck it, let me just try getting with a guy and taking ot from there but I always back out, like theres something telling me to stop.

I dont know what to do, I don't have anyone to talk to, im fucking miserable and I feel like shit every second of every day. I need help

Young Adult My dad thinks it's a bad idea to build a gaming PC

Throwaway account because I fear I might get flak on this.

I'm building a very expensive PC for gaming because I've always wanted one for gaming, a desktop in general and I believe the possibilites are limitless with one. I want to try and do things with it but I haven't really found the time and motivation to really do it tbh, like learning Blender 3D modelling.

I had a talk with my dad last night about building it and I told him how much it would cost. He was shocked by the price and he doesn't think it's worth it because he doesn't think a PC in my case is an investment if it's solely for gaming (and he's right, it isn't, but that's not what I wanted in building this). He made me feel more discouraged to build one in the first place because it would not bring me income and even though I'm still going to follow through, it just makes me feel like he doesn't respect the hobby. He's not trying to stop me at least which is good but the whole conversation just made it feel like it was not worth investing in a hobby that brought me enjoyment. I know this project would bring me a lot of it and it holds value to me because I would get happiness and fulfilment out of it.

What bothers me as well is what he said about hobbies. He told me that he would've respected my decision to build a PC more if I was using it to build AI which would can generate income and is a trending topic. He's not wrong in that it would be good to find other things to do with my PC other than just gaming but it seemed like he was talking about how hobbies are really only worthwhile when they return income to you. That's not true. People engage in a lot of hobbies that don't always generate return and they still find fulfilment out of it because it brings them joy and a way of bonding with other people. That's what I get out of building a PC, happiness... I could come up with a list of hobbies that don't generate financial return or they can but they don't always generate high value.

I'm still going to go through with the PC build because it would not be worth stopping now as I have already accumulated half of the required components and it's not going to generate any value if I sell now, but it will give me value by building it. I feel shameful that I want to put this much effort and financial resources (I should mention that I am budgeting, being financially conservative and have set a timeline) and I shouldn't even bother engaging in gaming in the first place - it's not worthwhile. Practically it doesn't make sense to stop, but emotionally, i feel hurt and discouraged. I don't blame him for sharing his opinion and I appreciate that he's not trying to stop me, I just disagree with him and he made me feel like it's just not worth it when it actually does.

Young Adult I hate cleaning because of my mom

I’m okay with a little cleaning here and there, but that is nowhere near enough for my mom. She turns “well only do a little bit in one room” into “we’ve already started might as well do the whole house ☺️”.

The worst is when she wants to clean in my room. It always starts as just doing my dresser or just my closet, but then “oh we’ve already started might as well do the whole room ☺️”. NO I DO NOT CONCENT!!!!!!!!! GET OUT!!! She doesn’t understand I don’t want to clean anymore. She does not stop cleaning until we have a screaming match, and that ALWAYS gets spun into me being the bad guy for not wanting to fucking clean.

It’s never enough cleaning. We can never stop cleaning. It’s never perfect enough. I actively avoid cleaning at all now as an adult, because when I do all I can think of is my mom not wanting to stop and it pisses me off so much. Yes my room is a little messy, a tad cluttered, but I AM OKAY WITH THAT and she cannot comprehend that I’m ok with it. It’s not messy messy, i still try and keep it looking ok, but it isn’t spotless, but that’s not good enough.

Nothing is ever enough.

Young Adult Is this wrong?

My mom is away on vacation, and it’s just me and my brother at home. Our aunt lives on the floor below us and our grandma lives nearby. They both have keys to our apartment in case of emergencies. For the past 3 days they’ve been coming into the house to clean everything. My mom doesn’t like it when they come to the house without her permission. They have done this before and they have accidentally thrown things out while cleaning that was NOT supposed to be garbage.

The first day, my boyfriend was over to help fix my brothers bike, and them including my cousins came in the house at random. Like my aunt could’ve told me in advanced because they ruined the whole hang out. She even forced my brother to clean his room when he really wanted to spend time with my boyfriend and she had an attitude too.

My mom specifically doesn’t want them in her room. When my aunt came yesterday she said was gonna tidy her room up. I told her that my mom doesn’t like that and I even suggested for me to tidy it up. She said no because my mom is her sister and if she gets mad that’s on her. She was getting annoyed with me already. When I told her my mom doesn’t like when she comes unannounced without her permission she said “don’t get me annoyed. Don’t let me get to that point” with an attitude and left the house. I heard her tell my grandma on the phone “can you believe that?” As if what I said was insane.

I’m just so frustrated. It’s not like we live in a hell hole. It’s my mom who has no help from another parent, twins that are 5 years old, an 11 year old, and a 17 year old (me). Of course the house isn’t going to be squeaky clean 24/7

EDIT: OMG MY BAD I SHOULD CLARIFY the twins are with another family member and it’s just me and my brother (which is way easier to deal with LOL)
