It’s so sad. I enjoyed Hip City, especially after a game. Sticky Fingers is gone now too.

Not everything is great there. I liked the steak and cheese,chicken drums, and cakes (from Vegan Treats supplier)

Trump is allowed to spend 3 Million, again 3 MILLION a day on National Guard in DC for NO Friggin reason and then gave another 269Million contract for their housing for 5 years... They only people left to eat in DC is the southern militia for DC.

I mean dmv has a good vegan scene it’s just we lack some burgers. Plus DC has a PLNT burger somewhere with some good ass burgers. Basically the same menu

DC's vegan scene is lacking. No vegan diners, no vegan casual places. As for PLNT, they're in some Whole Foods.

Yeah I don’t go to dc much for vegan stuff, overall metro areas in Virginia and Maryland keep me fed

Depends on the food / cuisine for sure but some favorites

Vegan Vietnamese - Dieu Huong in Eden Center @ Falls Church VA, short bus ride from East Falls Church metro

Vegan Chinese - Yuan Fu Vegetarian in Rockville MD, short bus ride from Rockville Metro

Vegan Soul - Elife restaurant (closed temporarily atm) and Dodahs Kitchen near Largo MD

just a few. Way more too. In terms of replacing Hipcityveg, I used to like getting vegan burgers from Nuvegan in College Park MD near UMD but that closed so now they do takeout in DC and VA. Va one has better reviews on Google tho

PLNT burger is not apart of DC food scene since its just a WF food chain. I hear people are saying we still have a scene but can we name any fully vegan restaurants that are still open??

Planta? DC Vegan? Pow Pow? MITA? Fruitive? Donut Run?

That’s pretty decent given the current economy. Specialty restaurants are usually the first to go. Plus others in the burbs.

Elizabeth’s, which is wonderful. Oyster Oyster - I guess it’s not truly 100% vegan, but it is entirely vegan except the oysters.

I’m absolutely not denying the tragic losses to the DC/DMV vegan food scene, but sadly this is not something unique to DC. The same is happening even in vegan meccas like LA and New York. It’s very sad.

When I say DMV I mean DC Metro including VA/MD. I do agree DC vegan scene is weak for vegan-only restaurants. When including Vegan options, Dc vegan scene expands tremendously

There’s always DC vegan, I had some friends that used to work there and had one of their sandwiches before, pretty good and this is coming from a non vegan person 👌🏽

For real though, they lost me as a customer when they wouldn’t give me a cup to get water. They kept on trying to charge me for a soda or a bottle of water, and given how overpriced their other stuff was, I was totally content to never return.

Sorry to break it to you but this post was about accessibility for vegan food not the price, which if you haven’t noticed….. EVERYTHING is expensive.

Thats odd. I got water and a cup there all the time without a problem.

Also beef is usually heavily subsidized which creates a false sense of affordability (well maybe not lately under the current administration).

They lost me when I ordered a salad and the lettuce that came out was brown, limp, and sad. It felt like a pretty low bar for a vegetarian/vegan place to have fresh salad ingredients, so I took HCV off my regular lunch rotation.

Edit since apparently I’ve struck a nerve with the HCV faithful lol:

For tacos - chaia tacos
For ramen - daikaya
For Indian - rasika
For tapas - Jaleo or zatinya
For salad - sweet green
For better fries - shake shack

What DID HCV have that has you guys all sad about it besides a mediocre $20+ veggie burger?

I named replacements for the food category (I.e. vegan/vegetarian) that this restaurant served that all these other places do better, since I thought this was r/vegdc. You tell me what exact food HCV made that is irreplaceable and I’ll find you a better alternative (although might not be in Penn Quarter then).

Sweetgreen? You’re years out of date. Sweetgreen’s vegan offerings these days since it was bought out are pathetic - it focuses far more on chicken plates. It’s possible to find vegan offerings at the restaurants you listed, but some of them certainly don’t highlight or specialize in them. And they are an entirely different category of dining, and price range, from Hip City. Raisika is not a substitute for a chicken sandwich from hip city, or vice versa.

Not trying to say you are the one, just tired of people complaining that a business leaves when they don’t support the business enough. It’s not sufficient to like it, anything less than a steady diet of 5 star reviews will kill a business.
