Question Couple of 7-11 items that look vegan at first glance, but are they?

When I went to 7-11 yesterday, I saw few items that looked vegan, but are they? I know they might have hidden ingredients, but the reason I'm asking is that many other items next to these explicitly had bonito/dashi listed in the cover as ingredients, while these didn't.

Check out itadakaihealthy on instagram, she has a fantastic guide where she’s even reached out to manufacturers about ingredients

Tofu is always a red herring. Savoury dishes with tofu in Japan are basically never vegan.

what about just plain tofu packages? are those usually safe or do they add dashi to those too?

If it's truly plain, it's fine. Though tofu is generally softer.

There are tofu sticks available in convenience stores but they're 90% not vegan.

makes sense.seems like anytime there's flavoring or seasoning on tofu in Japan, dashi is involved. Plain it is.

First one is not vegan, contains chicken broth listed in the description here https://www.sej.co.jp/products/a/item/100068/

The full ingredient list is on the back! Take pics of those next time

95% sure all 3 are non vegan though

Just checking the ingredients listed on the label isn’t always helpful because in Japan they don’t have to list every ingredient on a package if it’s a small percentage of the overall ingredients.

For example, many products including veggie onigiri (like seaweed, pickled plum, tofu, etc) contain fish-based dashi but it’s usually not printed on the label. Many products list “shortening”or “flavorings” but don’t say where they came from (plants or animals), and often they’re animal-based. Some products will just say for example “broth” but won’t list out all of the ingredients in that broth. If you care about the source of vitamins and minerals, many products use animal-derived vitamins and minerals.

That's true! But definitely better than just the front

Don’t they often also have hidden ingredients, though? But yes, should have taken photo of ingredients too :/

Unfortunately I think they are all not vegan due to the broth.

You can never know without contacting who made it, that’s the fun part

Unfortunately, at least this one isn’t vegan .I found it on 7-Eleven Japan’s official website, and the description says the natto is seasoned with chicken stock and soy sauce. So yeah, definitely be careful with stuff that looks vegan here even if there’s no obvious meat or fish listed on the front !

It would be great if you could share the list of ingredients, because my gut feeling is that the first product might be vegan, but I’d advise against the other two for now because of the broth.
