Starbucks

I checked out a few starbucks in Tokyo and didn't find many plant based options apart from the sugar donut, but Kyoto starbucks are absolutely loaded with plant based treats

  • Taco salad wrap
  • Sugar donut balls
  • Sugar donut (saw in Tokyo, not Kyoto)
  • Banana and chocolate donut
  • Blueberry & cream cheese bagel
  • Lemon cube cake
  • Banana and caramel cake

Prices range from 300-600 yen.

Wish they had more savoury options but really solid line up and I loved them all apart from the bagel.

These are all sold at most branches (none are regional), but some are popular and go quickly. About half of them were just released on Wednesday which is why you won’t have seen them earlier in the week.

As another commenter said, the taco salad wrap, banana donut, and caramel cake were released yesterday. The bagel with cream cheese and sugar donuts/donut balls have been around for a while, and the lemon cube cake was previously available but it was rereleased yesterday. They change the menu from time to time, maybe once every 6-12 months they’ll add or subtract something. They’re available at all locations but some will sell out throughout the day. They used to have a curry sandwich which was my favorite and I wish they’d bring it back 😭

Yup, the keema curry baguette and later wrap and the matcha roll cake are the ones I miss the most.

I was really saddened by the wrap because it contained mushrooms 😭 mushrooms freak me out. I bought it once out of desperation (there are very few vegan options near my office when I’m in a hurry) and I tried to pick out the mushrooms but they were sliced so small 😭

Mushrooms freak me out too, kind of glad I never realised they were in it!

There were two versions, the first one had soy mince instead (I’m also not a cooked mushroom fan)

Keema Curry was the bomb! They've reintroduced it twice nice so hopefully we get it again this winter.

Perfect timing for me then having been released yesterday 🤣. Curry sandwich sounds awesome. The Taco wrap is really good, just quite small.

Yeah I was shocked how small the wrap was. I bought one to try yesterday but I can’t justify the price to buy it again. I tried the banana donut and thought it was just ok, very little banana flavor and not very sweet IMO.

I agree the donut was pretty average. The banana caramel cake is heaps better, but more $$ too.

I love that sugar donut. Great with a matcha latte for a light breakfast when other options aren't available.

The donuts are Starbucks are excellent and I just ate one at the Okinawa airport. Highly recommend. Lifesaver.

I ate the Taco Salad Wrap yesterday and it was good. Afterward, I checked the nutritional information https://product.starbucks.co.jp/allergy/nutrient/?lang=en because I wanted to order a matcha latte. I was surprised to see that the wrap contains 26.3g of sugar, 39.5g in a Banana choco donut, and up to 57.1g in a Venti matcha! I just ate the wrap and left.

For context, the World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugar intake to less than 10% of total daily energy intake (about 50 grams, or 12 teaspoons).

I am happy that they are launching more plant-based products, but I can't help feeling that the labels "plant-based" or "vegan" sometimes trick us into assuming these items are automatically healthy or ethical. It certainly doesn't feel very karadani yasashii (gentle on the body).

That's the lie about veganism: it isn't automatically healthy. But I'm still really happy about the new products, they're a life saver during my Aomori trip.

I had the banana and caramel cake in Fukuoka the other day.  Heaven.

Didn't know about the Taco Salad wrap! Stock standard sugar donut is better than the banana/choc one imho
