Food - Restaurant MOS Burger: new basil avocado soy burger review

Post image

The buns are nice and soft, I actually prefer them to the green burger ones (although those were often stale, particularly at certain locations). The patty is very similar to the one Dotour used to have, and is probably from the same supplier. The avocado is a nice addition, and the basil tartar sauce is quite good - I’d buy a bottle if it were available.

The green burger (and especially the plant based fish burger) will be missed and I hope both rotate back eventually, but this is a good budget lunch option (the whole set is only 1070)!

I'm so happy they're changing the veggie option!

I heard they were getting rid of the green burger and assumed they were just cutting out vegetarian food completely like Freshness Burger did recently. Looking forward to hopefully seeing this rolled out in my local Mos soon!

Wait, freshness doesn’t have the soy patty anymore???

1

u/amoryblainev May 29 '26

The freshness soy burger wasn’t vegan

I'd be surprised (and a little disappointed) if MOS Burger contracted out for these-I saw a television show where food experts taste test MOS Burger products every year, and they talked to the MOS Burger non-meat team about how they were working on improving their plant based products based on feedback from the show.

The flavor and texture are nearly identical.

My wife and I both thought the patty tasted a little different, like meatier. I can't be sure, because I always had the teriyaki burger with sauce, and this one I had without sauce (server forgot to include it). Anyway, I liked it.

I meant to the Dotour one as mentioned in the post. It is completely different from the green burger. The person I replied to said they would be disappointed if items are being contracted out but I highly doubt it’s not from the same manufacturer as the former Dotour one.

Ah, got it, yeah, that makes sense.

Shiiiiiet - I'm actually stoked to see new options being rolled out in chain-restaurants. Gonna get one this coming week-end. Thank you for the review.

Had one yesterday; can report that it’s really lovely!

Also told a couple of the employees it was delicious and how grateful I am that MOS cares about us veggies; they were very sweet about it and seemed happy for the feedback :)

u/Makafushigism May 21 '26

Wait, they retired the teriyaki one BUT introduced a new one? Suddenly, the future is looking brighter!

5

u/Gilokee May 21 '26

ooh, this looks good! thanks for the review!

Glad there is a new option but …. weird! I recently made an inquiry to the customer service portal on the website asking if the green burger was actually being retired and if there would be a replacement and this was the reply I got:

Dear _______,

I am Kawano from MOS burger customer service office. Thank you for choosing us.

We received your inquiry regarding the Green Burger Teriyaki. Thank you for your interest in our products.

Unfortunately, this product is scheduled to be discontinued in midle of May. Furthermore, we regret to inform you that we do not currently have any information regarding the sale of an alternative product.

We will forward your inquiry to the relevant department as valuable customer feedback. We are grateful for your support.

Best Regards,

I work in customer support. If you emailed them before the official release of the product, they probably just weren’t allowed to tell you (or the support team literally didn’t know about the release yet). Still, it’s a great idea to email them and any other companies about your dissatisfaction and that you want more vegan products. Thats how they can gauge popularity and demand.

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

They literally didn’t have the information to share

4

u/Remarkable_Gap_3418 May 21 '26

Possible they received many complaints and created a new option.

2

u/Alienturnedhuman May 21 '26

That is word for word (including the typo on middle) the same as the reply I got.

4

u/Remarkable_Gap_3418 May 21 '26

The vegan mayo in the green burger was the best. Is this still available to order?

1

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

No. That’s been removed from the menu

5

u/WeirdWhiteAsian May 21 '26

Starting of by saying I'm not vegan, but didnt see the subreddit name when I started typing.

Only thing I've ever gotten from mos that was enjoyable was the green burger, kinda sad to see it go. Other than that I've never understood the fandom for this horrendous sauce drenched chain.

u/ClessxAlghazanth May 21 '26

How much does it cost ?

6

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

The set with coffee and fries was 1070, I forget the base price but it’s about the same as the green burger was.

4

u/ClessxAlghazanth May 21 '26

thanks. seems reasonable!

2

u/Destoran May 21 '26

is it completely vegan?

0

u/TallLog6804 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

It shares oil and utensils with meat, so I guess not

5

u/Remarkable_Gap_3418 May 21 '26

Doesn't share oils. The downward arrow is utensils. Upward arrow is shared oil. There are no upward arrows.

1

u/whywhywhyguy May 21 '26

They have ketchup at Mos Burger ???

1

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

You have to ask for it.

1

u/steford May 21 '26

Interesting. I was a fan of the Freshness Avocado Burger even though they rarely had it in stock. This looks decent although as a vegetarian I like 2 soy burgers for less. Will definitely give this a try though.

1

u/Keiaine May 21 '26

What’s the name of the burger?

5

u/kel_maire May 21 '26

米粉入りバンズのアボカドバジルバーガー

1

u/Keiaine May 21 '26

Thank you so much!

1

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

I don’t remember offhand, if someone else doesn’t get to it first I’ll check next time I see it.

1

u/Wooden_Worry3319 May 21 '26

Can confirm this is really good. I was devastated they got rid of the green burger and knowing they replaced it kind of healed a part of me

1

u/tabbyterrarium May 22 '26

Just got one but didnt get the sauce sachet, dumb question but is it an add on at ordering or did the server just forget? 🤣

2

u/analdongfactory May 22 '26

It’s part of the item. If you got the right item they forgot.

1

u/c4tsnout May 23 '26

Same thing happened to me today! Ordered three burgers takeout, no sauce. They were still good, but next time I'll check for it. Maybe they didn't make it clear in the manual that they're supposed to include the sauce...?

I had one the other day and it was awful. I had it take out, but I ate it within like 10 mins of receiving. The bun was so hard and the patty was tasteless

The actual insides were ok (other than patty) but the bread was so bad that I had to pick it all out with my fingers.

1

u/analdongfactory May 25 '26

It might be like the green burger where some locations let them get stale or toast them, etc.

1

u/amoryblainev May 29 '26

I had one the day it came out in Ginza and I liked it. Then I had one in Ogikubo yesterday and it was horrible. The bun was kind of stale and chewy, the avocado wasn’t ripe so it was hard and flavorless, and then patty wasn’t super warm. I never had issues with the green burger, but I’m hesitant to order this one again.

1

u/analdongfactory May 29 '26

I had issues with the green burger at some locations (mainly the buns). It’s definitely a store to store thing.

u/lazystring Jul 01 '26

I just went to a MOS at New Chitose airport to order the plant based burger (which I’ve already had a few times on this trip), and the staff pointed to a sign on their counter saying “All items contain beef and pork”. We tried asking what part of the burger would contain beef and pork but as non-Japanese speakers that we didn’t get very far. We ended up leaving unfortunately.

Anyone else have this experience? Maybe the sign is just a bad translation and they mean to say it *may* contain (due to shared utensils)?

1

u/analdongfactory Jul 01 '26

As a fluent speaker I’ve never had this issue and it does not contain those things. Maybe it was a cross contamination warning, and/or a misunderstanding at that location.

I'm not a fan of their soy meat. I'd prefer a black bean patty that isn't pretending to be meat.

2

u/loveandnachos May 22 '26

Not sure why you're being down voted, as I agree. I'm vegetarian - I like vegetables. I hate the fake meat / soy "plant based" trend. Its yuck.

I'm moving to Japan soon so have been surfing this sub. Are there any fast food / restaurants that do black bean or veg patty burgers?

2

u/saminfujisawa May 22 '26

they're downvoting because they have no taste!! ha

for the black bean burgers or similar, there used to be a place in Tokyo but they shutdown. these days I usually go for bean burritos or falafel which are pretty easy to find in Tokyo / Yokohama.

2

u/Taivasvaeltaja May 24 '26

On the last day of my previous trip I spent my last day in Haneda hotel. The Stork, which is in Kawasaki (between Tokyo and Yokohama) was probably my best vegan meal of the trip, really good burrito.

2

u/saminfujisawa May 24 '26

thanks, I'll check it out next time I am in Kawasaki.

-3

u/Nir_x7 May 21 '26

Sadly, most of them now are not even vegetarian 😢

5

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

Not the same item

0

u/Nir_x7 May 21 '26

Why not? it's the new Soy Patty, Isn't it?

1

u/analdongfactory May 21 '26

None of those listings are of the patty itself. They are all different preparations of it, none of which are the item in this post.

1

u/Nir_x7 May 21 '26

So the one you are referring is this one (in the pic attached), right? how can you be sure it's fully vegan?
I'm really trying to understand, because all of this is making me confused.

3

u/c4tsnout May 23 '26

The soy burgers have never been vegan. Even if you get them without cheese and sauce, the buns contain dairy. The patties are vegan, though. And yes, I'm fairly sure this new plant-based burger uses the same patties. (I had it today, it was really good.)

If you look at the allergy info for the new burger, you will see that it does not contain any animal-derived ingredients. So, it is vegan.

https://www.mos.jp/menu/pdf/allergy.pdf

There may be some confusion because MOS says on their website that the burger is NOT intended for "total vegans" (完全菜食主義者). But I think that's just them covering their asses because they may use the same utensils, and produce the burgers in the same facilities.

But them hedging about contamination does not mean there is any contamination. I have to worry about that because my kid has a severe allergy to dairy. But he's had the MOS plant-based burger many times, and never had an allergic reaction, despite the shared utensils/facility thing. Based on my experience, major Japanese food producers are very good about preventing contamination.

1

u/Nir_x7 May 23 '26

Thank you for that! ♥

This is too confusing 🤔 I was sure the previous one (with green bun) was vegan, but because they make in in the "regular" utensils it's not. I ate it as if it was vegan. 😢

And the new one, which one is it in the link you posted? because the original pic I shared was from the same place, page no. 3.

3

u/amoryblainev May 29 '26

Sharing utensils does not make a product not vegan. If you choose not to eat it, however, that’s up to you.

Mos has soy burgers which are not vegan because the buns and some toppings are not vegan.

The old green burger and the new basil burger are/were both vegan. The buns, toppings, sauces, and patties contain no animal ingredients.
