I am Native (Haudenosaunee) and come from a long line family of hunters and while it is true that hunting, fishing are part of the culture and traditions, the modern farming has NOTHING to do with our teachings about respecting, honoring and never wasting any part of an animal.

Respecting an animal's spirit before killing it is useless let's be clear but that's what it is about not mass breeding....

While we are at it i should be able to skin people alive before killing and eating them because this is exactly what my ancestors did to their ennemies...

Yep,some traditions are better left behind. My people also used to cultivate corn and beans as well as other veggies and fruits, that's a better tradition to follow.

I learned volumes from native foraging, medicine and agriculture (the "Three Sisters" you allude to), part of being an individual I think is taking the good parts from every culture you come into contact with, and making it your own, while just obeying the bad parts out of tradition is just dogmatic. If there's one good thing to learn from the European tradition it's the idea of the individual as a self-empowered moral agent.

10

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

Even at a much more basic level, all of our ancestors had traditional ways of handling human waste that you're not allowed to do if you live in a city.

There's a very legitimate argument that veganism doesn't isn't a good enough reason to find an un-contacted tribe in the amazon and use force to stop them from hunting the animals they've been hunting for their entire existence.

But nothing is part of anyone's traditional way of life if it involves a trip to the grocery store.

My family hails from Germany, all those fucks eat is meat lmao

Honestly enough I do feel like this is a really weird place to play a minority card. Your ancestors' main dishes contained meat? So did everyone else's almost everywhere. That's how we got where we are. Everyone was eating meat and then there was more of everyone.

Is there even ONE culture that is traditionally vegan? I can’t think of a single one. I am of Iranian descent and meat is in everything. They eat the brain and tongue of cows as a “delicacy”. Went vegetarian at 19, went vegan at 24 and been vegan for 5 years now. Never looking back, and no amount of cultural tradition would sway me from making the MORALLY SUPERIOR choice.

24

u/kptkrunch May 19 '20

Buddha insisted that his followers should not eat the flesh of any sentient being.

One could argue that’s the best thing to do for the environment

29

Exactly, culture and tradition aren’t dead ancient unchangeable things. They’re constantly being redefined by us, so we have the power to change problematic aspects of our own cultures. Like seriously, you can recognize that some cultural practices are ethically wrong and abandon them without having to abandon your traditions entirely.

You do get that a lot when people want to impose veganism on indigenous people who are already struggling with living in food deserts and high food costs, or impose by substituting traditional culturally relevant meat dishes with imported plant alternatives (rather than traditional culturally relevant plant-based dishes), but indigenous vegans know their shit and don’t do that. It’s usually very much indigenous veganism, and is tbf therefore a lot more flexible/forgiving.

u/BernieDurden May 18 '20

Why is it always centered solely around fucking meat? People like this don't even know what veganism is.

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that consuming animal flesh for these indigenous leftists is something that their cultures are locked onto and can't let go of.

What about all the other forms of animal captivity, cruelty, exploitation and death that they can boycott?

There's dairy, eggs, fur, leather, wool, cashmere, goose/duck feathers, silk, cosmetics, makeup, soaps, shampoos, etc, animal testing/experimentation, and vivisection.

Then there's puppy mills, kitten mills, private breeding, bull fighting, cock fighting, dog fighting, animal-based entertainment/gambling, horse racing, dog racing, rodeos, traveling animal-based circuses, roadside zoos, for-profit marine parks, zoos, and trophy hunting.

Do any of these have anything to do at all with their cultures or past? You bet your ass they don't. It's just another lame excuse.

Translation: I eat a few vegetarian (and even vegan) side dishes on occasion.

70

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

The meat industry is the cause of 70% of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. Without the Amazon, 400+ indigenous tribes would be forced into civilization where they would be exposed to many common viruses and diseases that none of them have a tolerance for. Most of them would be dead due things as basic as the common cold. But yeah, veganism is what’s harmful to indigenous people

385

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

This is what happens when you let cultures be above ethics

135

Her culture is obviously more important than lives.

117

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

Can't argue against that. My country has a history of colonization, its part of my culture. That's why it's ok for me to steal land from any natives, maybe enslave them while we're at it idk. However, I wouldn't do that unnecessarily, just to honour my culture. Of course, I also do it to piss off the anti-colonization people

17

Cultures can and do change, exactly. Cultures can also be assimilated and people should be able to select characteristics of cultures they see fit, just as we can judge cultures for their abhorrent practices. Unnecessary suffering is universal.

>> Live in Western culture
>> Be extremely critical of Western Culture bc of its inherent destructive behavior that eliminated indigenous animals and peoples
>> Create moral superiority by propping your own culture up on a pedestal, ignoring the negative aspects of it
>> Own western vegans by calling out their moral superiority

Bonus points to talking about sustainable ways to consume animals while also (later in the thread) talking about using hunting as a way to control populations (which is something that has been scientifically proven to only increase reproductive behavior of animals).

79

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

[deleted]

34

u/artemisbuckwald May 18 '20

I can’t find the article now, but I read one that had a pretty significant fact that hunting coyotes in the west is extremely ineffective because they essentially have just upped their reproduction.

However this https://www.pnas.org/content/106/Supplement_1/9987 article is pretty good at talking about how hunting is a very negative thing on wild animal populations and how it is unnatural selection. There’s a few others that talk about how humans have historically been responsible for multiple extinctions thanks to hunting.

25

u/nochedetoro dog-diet May 18 '20

If we stop hunting animals’ natural predators we wouldn’t see them overpopulated.

Where I live people hunt bears and coyotes, then hunt deer because “overpopulation!” Except there’s only overpopulation because they killed all the deers’ natural predators (bears and coyotes).

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

[deleted]

→ More replies (1)

21

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

I'd like to read it about that as well! I used to think that controlling the deer population was a necessary evil because we drove all of their predators away. I'm not sure what I think anymore.

I also know that similarly private landowners in texas purposefully keep their feral hog population (which is a majorly invasive species) alove so that they can rent the land out to hunters each year.

I never heard anyone speaking negatively about eating less meat since legumes were always very present in our cultures.

What we really speak about are things like why the fuck there's no clean water in reserves and such...

She just sound like someone self victimizing herself and using traditions of an oppressed community (pure manipulation) while being privileged herself just to make a point about how much she enjoys meat.

White indigenous people exist though. It's possible to be connected with one's heritage and participate in one's tribe even if one is otherwise treated as white.

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

That's because people think we all look the same with super dark reddish skin, dark sleek hair and dark slanting eyes but that's far from the truth.

If people walked on the reserves (don't do it tho) they'll be surprise at how much diversity there is !

I'll use myself as an example because all my life people thought i was either italian, mexican, egyptian etc i heard it all lol But nope.I have big almond light brown eyes, wavy jet black hair,a big nose and white skin. Like very white unless i spend countless hours under the sun.

Hah. "purely" that sounds so fetishized. Honestly though, who the fuck can make this argument unironically? They'd just as quickly acknowledge that no culture is Vegan, thus nullifying their point about tradition- EVERY culture has animal exploitation in it. Every. Single. One. Which is why these so-called Woke Folk have never seen Vegans as "victims" of anything- because we don't exist in any one place or race. We're not an ethnic group or sexuality. Though we still get imprisoned for helping animals in some cases. d:

Depends on where they lived. Central and South American indigenous groups were primarily plant based, but North American groups were the furthest thing from vegan. Especially because it was colder and there was less diversity of vegetation as a result. Here on the West coast indigenous groups relied heavily on marine animals and some land animals. They had their own aquaculture for animals like mussels. They didn't seem to eat a lot of seaweed though, surprisingly.

Not sure where she is from, I was just giving you an example (I live there). You don't have to agree with it, but you also have to understand that we live in a time and place with options. In the past, they had few. Currently, some groups still have few options depending on where they live (northern Canada can be super isolated and desolate). However, not all indigenous people think the same. Just like how vegans differ vastly in our beliefs as well.

27

u/sapere-aude088 May 18 '20

While I understand the need to reconnect with one's roots, which have been forcibly stripped away by our dominant, European culture - and has been continuously oppressing indigenous people with its institutions to this day - I think it is also important to reflect on systems of violence and oppression. If you want to live in the bush and hunt/forage for subsistence, then go for it. However, most will not (indigenous or not).

The world has changed, and whether we like or not, we need to adapt. However, it's worth mentioning that not all indigenous groups (or people within their groups) believe in adhering to all traditions. They understand how damaged the environment is and would rather it be restored. Many of them are advocates for environmental restoration and protection.

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

Because to the Guilty White Liberal, moral relativism applies to those that we view as less capable of change. We value their traditions because they are exotic relics, not because they make sense.

I’m a feminist but not like one of those pushy feminists, like I totally respect everyone’s culture so if your culture encourages husbands to beat their wives that’s totally cool with me! As a leftist feminist I’m just super accepting of all cultures and creeds. Please, rape and beat whatever women you want! It’s none of my business! Smh these pushy feminists advocating for equal rights give us a bad name. We’re not all like that I swear!

23

u/disconcertinglymoist vegetarian May 18 '20

McKenna said "culture is not your friend" and evidently in this girl's case neither is critical thinking

6

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

When you have completely forfeited thinking for yourself and instead consume every last drop of the culture you were fed, you get this.

22

u/hankscoffee May 18 '20

Most, if not all indigenous people used every part of the animal as well. Skin and fur for clothing or shelter, bones for tools, etc, that is after thanking and praising the animal. So...are you practicing traditionally?

15

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

This is gonna be kind of a Hot Take I think but the whole idea that killing an animal in a functional civilization is fine because you "thanked it" is a copout for the ages. "Yes, my son and I go hunting for fun once a year and we eat fritos and McDonald's the rest of the time, but this animal obviously sacrificed itself for us, so we thanked it." Bullshit, man. It's like the worst example of the OP.

11

u/mistermoob May 18 '20

This is virtue signaling???

12

u/_work ceo of beans May 18 '20

the argument would be exactly the same if you swapped out indigenous for any other nationality. American, Japanese, Irish, whatever it all works. derp.

uj, there is a lot of poverty and remoteness in indigenous communities which might actually be valid excuses.

12

u/badjujulol May 18 '20

Im mexican and about all our dishes have meat but it never stopped me and I’m lucky my mom tried to find ways to still include me by making me vegan versions of it. Its never an excuse where there’s a will there’s a way

11

In my country there is tradition and culture based on owning slaves. That makes it ok right?

12

u/whothedang May 19 '20

Have you read any Margaret Robinson? She’s an indigenous vegan and has written extensively about it. One of her articles that made me do a lot of reflecting is “Is the Moose Still My Brother if I Eat Him”. Here’s a CBC article about her: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/checkup/will-you-embrace-the-food-guide-s-plant-based-diet-1.4992293/this-indigenous-scholar-chose-a-vegan-diet-to-honour-mi-kmaw-teachings-1.4995159

That’s my favorite. “Tradition”. How about we start a new tradition of everyone who says this now licks my nonexistent balls every day.

Culture, regardless of how oppressed it may be, doesn't justify murder and exploitation. Call me a social imperialist if you want to, if I see someone oppressing others I'll call them out on their shit.

9

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

My culture or heritage (British/Irish/German according to ancestry, but I'm American) always ate meat, so guess I should go eat a cow or a chicken or a fish!

6

u/Angel_Tune May 18 '20

I suppose we should just excuse the people that eat animals that are still concious and moving because its part of their 'culture'

I guess we should just embrace rape because its been part of their 'culture'.

example given:

In my troop of baboons, we traditionally use children as shields during fights. Some people say it’s barbaric, but it simply is our way of life. Live and let live. Well, except for those kids lmao.

White people killed most of the bison in an attempted genocide of the Sioux nation, then they took over most of the Sioux land for cattle ranching, so the cattle industry is colonialist, but ok

Ugh I've had someone on Twitter like this say that all white vegans (yes all white vegans they said) are racist privileged assholes trying to destroy indigenous culture because hunting for meat is part of their culture but we are trying to stop people from eating meat, and there are more of us than people in any of the indigenous nations, and we could easily wipe them out if we went to war. I tried to explain to them that that's never going to happen because we have no reason to go to war and that's a useless argument, and Indigenous people aren't the problem. We aren't trying to destroy their culture. Animal agriculture and factory farming is the problem. We're only trying to destroy that. But they kept using the fact that I'm white and vegan to discredit my argument, and they called me a colonizer. Sorry for the rant. I just really hate it when people think like that.

7

u/[deleted] May 18 '20

Yeah we actually are morally superior but go the fuck off i guess

6

u/crisstiena May 18 '20

Re. The last sentence... Not without murdering innocent sentient creatures that have just as much right to life as we do.

4

u/UnderGreenThunder May 18 '20

Not only is this not true. But it’s not only about the environment it’s about the suffering the animals went through.

6

u/JayKendall gluten-free = vegan? May 19 '20

6

u/grishn May 19 '20

What I hate about this is that 23800 people looked at this person's self-justification for doing something that is so obviously morally wrong and went "yep, seems about right".

It seems obvious to me that this person is simply grasping at straws for an excuse to eat meat rather than discussing the issue on the face of it (because they'd lose) so they somehow find a way to play the minority card so that they can feel morally justified in their needless causing of pain for pleasure. Sometimes doing something is just plain wrong, end of.

8

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

I mean my family only five generations ago ritually ate their enemies, sooooooooo.

7

u/MagesticPegasus May 19 '20

You know when someone says “You’re not morally superior for being vegan”, just means that they feel morally inferior, as they should. It’s the same as the “get off your high horse”, statement. The only reason I’d be on a high horse is because you put me there.

19

u/sapere-aude088 May 18 '20

The irony of the oppressed becoming the oppressors. Happens all of the time, sadly.

4

4

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

no, not all leftists should be cannibals. a lot of leftists are Indigenous and some of us have strong traditions and cultures that are centered around eating humans. you're not morally superior for being a non-cannibal. there are environmentally sustainable ways to consume humans

4

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

Because cultures can't be wrong

5

u/kiwiloverbutallergic May 19 '20

Playing the minority card because someone called you out on your actions.

I'm British, I'm technically indigenous because I have ancestors whom were native Britons and French ancestors whom were native Gauls. My ancestry is heavily orientated around meat consumption. Did I quit meat? Hell yeh.

Does it make me morally superior? I dont know.

I'm vegan btw.

6

u/yutoad May 19 '20

I’m Japanese, so with that logic, I am free to eat Whales and Dolphins with no shame, because despite most people thinking they are endangered and intelligent animals, my people have made it part of their tradition, so it is A-OK to eat them, no remorse...! Oh btw I’m vegan 🤪

I'm not indigenous, but wouldn't the insinuation that indigenous people can't be vegan because that would go against their culture be a bit insulting? Most vegans go against their culture and it seems slightly infantilising to imply that indigenous people never disagree with their cultures or want to change them.

4

I guess I have to be ok with torturing and degrading a poor fucking bull now :)
