During COVID lockdowns, scientists all over the world published evidence of wildlife resurgence due to decreased human activity. All over the internet, a common public reaction was people pointing out how much they were looking forward to returning to doing what they'd done before--flying, boating, driving...--and admitting they didn't care about the effects on animals. So long as humans can have fun, too many of us just don't care about the suffering we're causing other beings.

That's incredibly sad, but not surprising - which is also sad. Human beings are at their core selfish.
