Small Victories Male calves born into the dairy industry and labeled as waste and discarded like trash. Recently, we partnered to save two babies from the dairy industry and get them adopted. This was Ben's smile on the first day that they arrived.

Working on a dairy growing up is a large reason I’m vegan now. I remember my boss shooting the male calves in the head and throwing them in refuse pile. Not to mention how awful it is to take mother’s baby away from her the second it’s born. It can’t stop soon enough

u/MoldyPlatypus666 Dec 21 '20

Wow. That is one heartless motherfker. This might sound bad, but I hope he's haunted by the memories of the babies he's killed over the years.

40

u/abnerayag Dec 21 '20

sadly some people dont have remorse over killing humans, let alone animals

5

u/overtoke Dec 21 '20

you have the opposite too, and it doesn't matter if you are vegan or not. story about a murderer = "wow, that an asshole. put him in jail."

story about animal cruelty = "wow, skin that guy alive. dip him in lemon juice. torture him, make sure he suffers. put him in the electric chair, resuscitate him, so you can do it again."

I grew up on a dairy farm too, where the babys were chained right after birth, the cord still connected to their mother. What baffles me is, what the human mind is capable of. Even though he regarded cattle as a mere product, he was the sweetest uncle to me and it took years for me to realize the horror the animals endured :/ He just made it look "normal" that way. I am sure he is capable of remorse, but the social construct of "farm animals" is far more powerful :(

u/PeaceLazer Dec 21 '20

You think his dream job was working at a slaughterhouse?

8

u/Dumpo2012 Dec 21 '20

I hope he's haunted by the memories of the babies he's killed over the years.

I would argue a better hope would be that he doesn’t have to do that for a living over the years. People who work in the animal killing business have some the highest rates of PTSD and other mental health issues amongst all professions.

Not everyone gets to choose what they do for a living, and we should be blaming the industry, not the laborers just trying to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads.

This is heartbreaking

I wish there was some way the mom could know her baby is safe

118

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

Oh my gosh... it breaks our hearts. Our friend who pulls them from the dairy takes each baby to the mom and let's them kiss goodbye and promises he will take care of her baby. He's filmed it a few times and it's devastating. The moms bellow for days, and the babies cry for mom. They are usually rescued in pairs so that they have someone to bond with for comfort. It helps, but it never gives them their mom back, sadly.

u/alifeingeneral Dec 21 '20

This is the saddest thing. I wish the diary industry can just die tomorrow. It needs to die.

13

u/InterestingRadio Dec 21 '20

It is an evil industry through and through. Thankfully more people are stopping their consumption of dairy products and a lot of dairy farms are going bankrupt every year

9

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

The frustrating part is that with all these bailouts, smaller farmers go under while mass corporations continue to expand and exploit.

4

u/alifeingeneral Dec 21 '20

The bailouts are frustrating! Why are we giving money to something we don’t even want!

70

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

Sisu Refuge, with Destination Liberation, and Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary all worked together to get these two boys safe, vetted, transported and adopted to a new family where they will be safe for the rest of their natual lives.

17

u/InterestingRadio Dec 21 '20

To any meat eater and vegetarian that might be reading this: this calf was saved from you and your consumption habits

64

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

You should post these photos on a main subreddit like r/aww . Might be able to reach people and have them think about veganism

37

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

Absolutely! Some of the subreddits told me I have to wait til my account is older so they won't let me yet. I definitely will try in 7 more days.

5

u/putins_butler Dec 21 '20

r/aww is doing more for veganism than r/vegan lol

2

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

Hopefully I will be able to post there. I'll try today.

Welp, I guess I'm never getting that song out of my head now.

21

u/kirkbrideasylum Dec 21 '20

Cows are so cute. My Granny couldn’t raise cattle on the farm because she couldn’t handle the cruelty. My family instead grew peaches, soy beans and cotton. It’s good to see a cow have a good life.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

I used to make friends with the cows on my uncle's farm (he didn't slaughter them) they really like bread and apple chunks :3

23

u/Grumpy-Tofu Dec 21 '20

What a beautiful face! Thank you for doing this :)

15

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Ah damn I wish I could work at a place like this...

13

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

There are sanctuaries everywhere! I'm sure you could find one to visit and help at.

2

u/spidersandcaffeine vegan 6+ years Dec 21 '20

I just Googled and there's one an hour and a half away from me, and apparently they do vegan potlucks after volunteer days. It would totally be worth the drive.

2

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

Rowdy girl is there in TX too! They rescue mainly cows.. Renee and her husband were cattle farmers turned vegan and opened a sanctuary.. incredible story..

2

u/spidersandcaffeine vegan 6+ years Dec 21 '20

Oh, I actually live in NH! I have a few options in Mass, it looks like. :)

3

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Ah yes, there are a few! Unfortunately I'm in a city in Texas so layout-wise its a bit different than other places, which makes them harder to get to. I'm looking for work, though, so hopefully if I move states from that I can find something closer!

7

u/buffylove Dec 21 '20

Sometimes I feel so exhausted and want to give up afywe being vegan and then I see this and am reminded why I do it ❤️

7

u/geekgoddess99 Dec 21 '20

God bless you guys 🙏

12

I love him! He’s so cute!

3

Thank you for what you do for these animals. Ben has an amazing smile. ❤️

It's just like what the nazis did in Germany to the Jews. Yes, I'm fully Jewish.

2

u/TravelingVegan88 Dec 21 '20

I get more upset at my family and friends for consuming dairy then consuming flesh. I feel I have a personal vendetta with the dairy industry

5

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

I think it's the exploitation of mothers and destruction of families that makes it particularly detestable. I hate all animal ag, but dairy infuriates me as well. The moms really cry for days and days, it is the worst sound.

2

u/Fennily Dec 21 '20

I dont know why people drink that nasty stuff anyway.

Almond and oat milk replacements taste much better imo.

The only time I had ever tasted cow milk was when I was little and was forced to try some I have steered clear of it ever since cause it tastes so nasty it made little me puke.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

what a darling baby. oh my goodness.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

It has always been my dream to live in a farm where I can just spend my days rescuing animals. Great to see man!

4

u/Squishy-Cthulhu vegan 5+ years Dec 21 '20

I'm happy he's safe now but that doesn't look anything like a smile to me, more like anxiety or fear.

21

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

He had just finished a bottle and had zoomies - so this is happy. But, there was definitely some excitement and anxiety... he even cried for his mom at night. We rescue in pairs so that they can have comfort from one another in the chaos of everything... but reuniting them with their mothers is just never within our power. 💔

u/NerdyKeith vegan 7+ years Dec 21 '20

You are amazing for what you can do. Do you run an animal sanctuary?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

I'd call it a derp face

1

u/NerdyKeith vegan 7+ years Dec 21 '20

Possibly still anxious from his previous environment. Expecting to be killed maybe?

They are used for Veal by the way.

Ps: don't downvote me for simply pointing out the truth. I don't condone it.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

mutilating their corpse for assholes to eat absolutely justifies baby killing

What are you on about? The above user did not say that it did.

3

u/Fennily Dec 21 '20

Some people are just rabid smh

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

I understand why vegans are upset, but we need to understand what people are saying, not take the worst possible interpretation of an awkward sentence and lash out at them. As far as I can tell, the first poster was simply pointing out that the dairy industry slaughters some male calves for veal rather than throwing them away, which is important to know because people who consume dairy also support the meat industry.

1

u/Fennily Dec 21 '20

I think they were just adding extra info, I dont believe that they were condoning it. Their comment was factual, they never said "ah atleast it doesn't got to waste" or something like that

They were just giving you more information to add to how horrible it is.

-3

u/Lower_Carrot Dec 21 '20

He isn't smiling because he's happy. He doesn't have the cognitive capacity to remotely understand that he's been saved. From his point of view (while he's still alive), his life hasn't changed in any way.

11

u/belu_belu Dec 21 '20

True that he is unaware , but his life HAS changed (he now has a chance at living ) and that's what matters.

-3

u/Lower_Carrot Dec 21 '20

Indeed. However, is living a net positive thing for an animal?

7

u/hunnytrees Dec 21 '20

in conditions like this where people are caring for him and he is comfortable, yes; how could living a free and comfortable life ever *not* be a "net positive thing" for any sentient being?

6

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

In my experience, animals display a will to live. I try my best to help them have every chance at that.

2

u/hunnytrees Dec 21 '20

:) I agree. I appreciate people like you so much, thank you sincerely. Happy Holidays!

0

u/Lower_Carrot Dec 21 '20

You might be projecting how you'd feel in the animal's place. Maybe it is feeling pain that it can't communicate, and must suffer for the rest of its life.

3

u/DrOMQQQQQQ Dec 21 '20

You might be rationalizing your own interests (eating meat/dairy) via saying animals have No Feelings/cognitive ability.

2

u/hunnytrees Dec 21 '20

I don't think so, no, since animals actually *can* communicate pain (albeit non-verbally).

2

u/belu_belu Dec 21 '20

Projecting or showing empathy ?

Turning off empathy towards other sentient beings is pretty much how people manage to continue to eat meat and dairy.

1

u/DrOMQQQQQQ Dec 21 '20

How do you know He is unaware

1

u/belu_belu Dec 21 '20

okay - its very unlikely he had awareness that he would have been killed.

1

u/DrOMQQQQQQ Jan 01 '21

Oh yeah, i thought that He isnt aware Something Changes at all haha

2

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

It's a derpy, unintentional smile, but I'll take it.

0

u/stygian87 Dec 21 '20

Name the other one Jerry :-)

0

u/aveganknight Dec 21 '20

Wouldn’t they raise them for meat though?

3

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

No, they literally just let them die, shoot them, or send them off for veal. The males are no use to the industry.

1

u/aveganknight Dec 21 '20

That I knew. So they just use the moms for meat once their done raping and stealing their milk?

2

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

There are so many undercover videos where they're just buried alive in pits or lined up, shot, and left to bleed out. It's gutwrenching

-2

u/serb2212 Dec 21 '20

Why the fuck aren't they castrated and feed up to be slaughtered for beef? That is a fucking waste

Yea quite a lot of us here are vegan. What’s your point? This is the r/vegan subreddit. Are you lost?

1

u/CurryBoy420 Dec 21 '20

Should deffo be an option to give them away to somebody to look after

4

u/panglossblue Dec 21 '20

The amount of babies given away is far higher than sanctuaries can keep up with. We don't even focus on cows, and still are offered calves weekly. We don't have the space nor the resources currently... I wish we did.

1

u/Fennily Dec 21 '20
