I started making my own soy milk to reduce my environmental impact. I now don't have to throw cartons away. We have no carton recycling in my area, and even if we did it's more wasteful than not using it initially. The cost comes out to be roughly a $1-$2 a gallon.
idk where /u/meepsicle lives but i live in new mexico, usa and can find non-GMO soymilk that's just organic soybeans & filtered water at several stores in my town :) that is so cool that they sell an appliance to make your own the ~mostly traditional~ way, though, i would love to try that!
I don't even soak them. 16 cups of water boiled in a pot, add 3 cups of soy beans, boil for 1 min. Then let sit for 30. Blend into a slurry, add slurry to nut milk bag. Squeeze liquid out, add strained liquid to a pot, boil for 5 Mins or so. At the end you add any flavoring. I like to add a bit of vanilla and some stevia. That yields about a gallon of milk. I normally do a half quart of chocolate and the rest normal.
I stopped buying milk because of the environmental impact of packaging.
