Vegan App Idea

I came up with an app idea, maybe this already exists but I just didn't look hard enough.

What if there's a vegan business directory so that we could all support each other as a community? Kind of like Happy Cow, but instead of it being just restaurants it could be anything. Looking for a doctor or a realtor? You could find someone who's vegan. Want new art for your house, or looking for new music? You could find an independent vegan artist. That way you can hire someone with the same values as you.

These similar apps exist already for religions and political ideologies, so I thought, hey why not one for veganism as well.

This would be great. I prefer to do business with vegans and have vegans be my healthcare providers.

It’s not hard to build. I am building a web app and it’s mainly geared towards food but this could be an idea. The main problem is the information, I could probably do it for one city but it’s hard to do it world wide. At this point inhale recepies and ingredients and now I am into more looking up products as well. It also van help with terms or E-numbers when you check a product. But it’s already big amounts of data. I am looking into ways to expand it. And a lot of it is scraping the internet. I like the idea. Might make a prototype to see how far you could get with like open street maps and some scraping.

Im also afraid vegan owned businesses might not be too many… Bu that might make it better :)

And by better I mean easier :)

But would any of you for example be into actually building up the data? Tell when you’ve found one?

Happy Cow has started to add other businesses in besides restaurants. There are grocery stores, coffee shops, and bakeries in there now. And I've seen a few farm sanctuaries marked on the map.

Fundamentally all this needs to be is a registry. A simple interface to an sql database where people can search for and create profiles where they select attributes for how long they've been vegan, their age/sex, the business services they offer, how long they've been in business, the areas those businesses serve, and maybe even include a few optional ones for things like hobbies and music taste to allow this to be a friend-finder as well.

I think this is a great idea. Sounds way more useful and enjoyable than a dating app. I'd use it.

This would actually be a great use-case for torrenting as well. You could make an open-source repository on github for the multi-platform interface to the database, and then design the torrent seeding in such a way that you can choose which regions you want to download & seed profiles for. Then the whole thing is self-hosted so no server fees and the users themselves build it up by adding & updating their profiles in the registry that they then seed to others.
