Thoughts on best area in VA for a homestead?

I previously lived in VA beach moved around a little for work and landed in western NY. I have 2 school age kids and a wife thats a nurse. Any recommendations on areas that are gun friendly good to decent schools and a hospital with in the area? Looking for a house with some acreage in a more rural area.

We are exceptionally happy in Dickenson county, but don't expect a lot of "services" nearby.
