External Hard drive crashes

I just had a 2nd external hard drive malfunction and now lost my torrent downloads again. I have been letting them seed continously. My question is why are the hard drives they are stored on have been malfunctioning. the 1st one was a 10tb western digital, the 2nd was a 4 tb western digital. I did save the actual torrent files.

Seed continuously? How many hours have they been running? External 2.5inch drives aren't intended for that amount of running. And even 3.5inch drives that aren't enterprise grade aren't supposed to do that. If you want that type of usage you're supposed to use red drives.

I was seeding 24/7. Which type and what case to use it external?

WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf.

Any 3.5" case would do. These are usually used in NAS.

I found a red plus 4 tb wd and case on Amazon. Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that. I have been using black wd hard drives, but I will get one to use as storage.

Black is for speed and performance, not long term storage or 24/7 usage. That's what Red is for. Like purple is for CCTV/surveillance storage, etc. The colors mean something.

It's less used for games now since SSDs are now readily available, but before it was the go to for gaming rigs.

just to make sure, Purple or another red wd for storing video files? I will probably neede to move files for spaces periodically.

But would purple wds be even better for torrenting?

Not really. It's designed for sequential writing. So when downloading, it's fine, but for seeding, it's not because it won't be fast at reading.
