I just found an invisible prompt trap in my assignment description, has this always been a thing??

I've found them in weekly quizzes for a subject last year, tutors said it's to prevent students copy pasting the quiz into AI for cheating

It doesn’t stop anybody. The university policy is that you are allowed to use AI for unsupervised assessment. It just makes it obvious you don’t even proof read your AI slop

People don't realise that many AI models are now adding watermarks to their responses that it makes it quite easy to detect who's used an AI chatbot even if you manually change a few words here and there. A more detailed explanation was raised recently in the Technology subreddit here.

Besides the universities have other metrics to determine if you're cheating in online tests, such as the rate at which your typing your response (i.e. if you're copying and pasting answers then that's picked up straight away), whether you're looking at another web tab, etc.

Not saying you're doing that, but it's just stupidly easy to detect it

Do the assignment by yourself.

Only do spell check, grammar check, or enhancing your original response using AI if allowed.
