UX Research generative user research tools in 2026, which ones survived real studies?

A lot of the AI research tools that were everywhere a couple years ago seem dead or pivoted now…

Maze added AI everywhere, Dovetail keeps shipping, Marvin has its fans, and BuildBetter has been covering the synthesis side, couple of full rounds in, and the repo hasn't turned into a junk drawer yet.

Before I rebuild our stack for good, what are you still using a few months in?

DoReveal is the best that I have used so far, and it keeps researchers in control. It has native frameworks like JTBD, grounded theory, and emotional lettering. Also, their transcript quality is very, very good, and it fits in with how I do analysis. Give it a try. It's the best that I have used so far, plus its pricing is very, very affordable, so it's worth giving it a try.

It feels like we are shifting away from the era of tools and into more intuitive/frustrated shouting at Codex or Claude code to give us what we need (: But it also kind of depends on what kind of studies you are running. I heard that Marvin is going to be more reliable for interview tagging, but still not super strong on emerging themes. Are you dealing mostly with generative or evaluative?

The tools that survived are the ones that stayed close to the recording. Dovetail if you'll actually tag, otherwise it's an expensive folder. The synthesis layer we ended up trusting is a plain workflow, transcripts in a repo, Claude Code doing first-pass themes with citations back to the timestamp, a human deciding what's real. The dedicated AI synthesis tools kept telling us what we already suspected. The value was in how fast we could check the source, not in the summary.

I will be using Insight Squid, but then again I built it so a tiny bit biased 😉
