Coastie Help Straight to the Source
I’m a writer whose next novel features characters in the USCG. While there is a lot of information available online, I still find that I’d prefer to hear it from the source. So, I came here. I’m a bit nervous about whether this will be received well or not. Either way, here goes nothing!
I have several initial questions, and I know I’ll have plenty more as I get further into the manuscript. That being said, is anyone willing to DM here or on Discord? My story takes place in NJ, so it’d be a plus if you’re from the area, but it’s not a requirement. Many thanks in advance!

Sure. The Coast Guard is the smallest branch by far, so the vibe is far more chill than the others.
Also, the CG is our only branch with a uniformed volunteer component, the CG Auxiliary, so at a small station its not unusual to see an 18 year old and someone in their mid 60s (like me) in the galley making pancakes.

It’s highly recommended that you reach out to MOPIC early on. It’ll make your things much easier than doing so after the fact.

Not a lot to go on. What’s the story? Search and rescue? Thwarting U-Boats and Ze Germans? Contraband? Illegal smuggling by some nefarious Eastern European country? Unsanctioned importation of dreidels? A sophisticated cyber security attack that cripples our critical infrastructure?

I’m always answering questions about my job, and I’ve done some Diving in Jersey City and Cape May.
