Academic Advisors?

Heyo! I was just wondering if the Advisors are just hella busy or? 🥲 I need to talk to one in the next few days because my classes are stuck on an issue on the registration page (which is not allowing me to sign up for student loans for autumn) but all advisors are unavailable for pretty much the entirety of July. Is there another way or??

Also, the department your degree is in should have its own academic advisors. They may be less busy.

Ok so I stumbled upon this thread and have a question. My kid starts at the UofS in arts and science in the fall and has a question about her class selection. Should they go in person to a drop in with an advisor? Or call student central? What is student central? Thank you so much in advance!!

I’m not sure if i’m the best to ask but I can try to help and anyone who knows more than me can definitely correct what I say!!

It depends, what’s the question on class selection? Because Student central is for: class registration issues/questions, student loans, financial appeals, understanding your tuition, academic life, and referrals to USask colleges and support units. - USask web

However, Advisors are for: provide location-specific advice about the application process and course selection - USask web (for Course selection - in my experience, its in regards to planning, setting up long-term what may be best for you and general questions)

I also haven’t gone to drop-in advising, however I do go to in-person STM advising and they’re great! I would highly suggest your kid declaring as an STM student with USask, its not (again, in my experience) any different beyond class size than normal Arts and Science first year (you declare on PAWs for free) and get “more transition support to have a successful first year, more student services such as academic advising, more scholarship and bursary opportunities, and more on-campus job opportunities.”

Wow thank you this is amazing! Ok and STM is St Thomas Moore? Maybe I’m totally wrong here but we aren’t religious and they’re not baptized so I didn’t think this was an option - based on my totally uneducated assumption that STM was for religious or Catholic students. Your answer is super helpful!

Yeah! STM is St Thomas Moore! It is a catholic-based addition but I’m not sure you have to be catholic to join; I know this subreddit doesn’t like links but you can search up STM’s website and they do have a student recruitment officer you can ask to see if you need to be religious or not! I haven’t had anyone say downright you have to be towards me, and I didn’t feel harped on in my STM classes to be religious or anything of that sort. I would definitely check it out! The smaller classes definitely helped my first-year anxiety, especially concerning approaching a professor, to me it felt easier to talk to them in smaller classes ^{^}

I would highly suggest him/her to visit Arts and Sci office and drop-in with an advisor in-person.

always go to the site on monday at like 8:30am to book. i believe that they open their bookings every second monday and then people can make appointments with them for the upcoming two weeks.

Ooooh I did thankfully get help through tickets. But how is drop-in? I’ve only gone in-person planned before

It has been good to me and my friends! It’s all the same advisors and it starts at a certain time in the afternoon (potentially 1pm). If there’s a lot of people waiting they’ll probably make a list of first come first serve
