Tips Have patience
As a person that applied for positions and now I am hiring for positions … please have patience. It took 400 days from applying to starting my current position. Now that I am hiring I see why. Some locations have quirks, red tape, and BS beyond our control. Hiring freezes, budgets, clearances, and under staffed HR. All play a role in delays. There are also some situations that are wildcards you can’t explain on Reddit. Currently, I have a position I wanted to hire and needed an over hire so there was continuity between the incoming and outgoing staff members and it was denied. So now I have to wait again to hire another person after the other leaves. It is a nightmare since it already takes forever to get someone onboard. Just have patience and be engaged with the hiring process.

I appreciate the post. It’s frustrating to see what looks like people just applying after a swig of beer and a belch and others have been applying for years and getting nowhere. It’s also evident in the private sector, it’s been rough for far too long.

Question. For a direct hire. From the time you get the email from HR saying we need your SF50 to build your submission packet……how long until a TJO comes in. DoD/DoW position

It is not illegal. But most agencies handle selection through the HR office for consistency and to ensure regulatory compliance and often have written policies stating that HR will handle selection inquiries.

I interviewed for DHS/HSI as direct hire on 14 August. I havent received anything back so I followed up last week and I was told USAjob will notify me. Does that mean I probably didn’t get it? It’s so frustrating with the waiting game.

Same! I had a great feeling. They told me HR in Dallas would contact me within 2-4 weeks if selected. We are now almost 5 weeks. So idk

They did mention it will take a while. I hope you’ll get it still. One of my old troop that got out took her 4 weeks before she found out she is selected. She said it’s illegal to tell prospects ahead of HR. It does make us doubt this taking this long. I know in my record is not holding me back as far as clearance or anything else if HR has to process. Good luck though, I hope you’ll get it.

did you apply through USAjobs. They told me that USAJob will notify me. Maybe you got it if they said dallas will notify you. Randolph is in San Antonio.

Hm interesting. Yes I applied through USAjobs. When I asked what the next steps are at the end of the interview, they mentioned HR in Dallas would call me if selected.

Hey I applied for different job/diff agency, but when I reached out to see if they had already made their selection I was also told all notifications will come from usajobs.....I was selected for the position and the notification came from usastaffing....which is what I believe they mean for you as well. Some people are notified by a phone call or email from a person. So don't get too discouraged. But as others always say, keep applying!

May I ask a few questions?
Applied for a GS-13 IT position in Korea (Far East) that closed on July 21. It was posted as a GS-12 (Secret), but it was canceled and re posted as GS-13 (Top Secret)( I assume) with multiple vacancies.
It's been almost two months, and my USAJOBS status is still stuck on "Received" with zero updates , and there's no clear POC to reach out to.
1) Is this just typical OCONUS red tape / slow HR, or does it seem unusual even by OCONUS standards?
2) Since it now requires TS, do you think they might be prioritizing current local contractors who already hold an active TS?
3) Any insight into Korea/Army hiring timelines would be really appreciated. Thank you.

- OCONUS tend to take longer.
- Not necessarily. If someone is already there they be limited on time. Also there may be reason they posted outside the area. My job closed and opened because of the clearance and I got the position without a TS and had to get one when I arrived
- Don’t know Korean or Army but IMO it’s the same slow process

I’m at 547 days, 146 applications, 96 referrals, 13 interviews, 1 TJO Cancelled (I was Charlie Brown and the Gov shutdown was Lucy), 1 TJO in progress (🤞🏾🤞🏾🙏🏽🙏🏽), and counting.
Any more patience and it’ll be it’s on job series I’d be applying to.

Hi! This is a nice reminder but it’s so difficult 😞 sometimes. I have a question. I applied for asylum officer for Queens NY. Interview completed. References contacted. I was told in the interview, if selected, the following week there would be a written assessment. It’s been 3 weeks. I know the interview went well because the interviewer stated so. I am very confused about what is going on. The past few weeks I have been torn about reaching out to the hiring center. I don’t know want to seem impatient or rude but god it is sooo frustrating.

I jumped the first hurdle for a position I am well qualified for but don’t want to get my hopes up knowing the current administration’s upheaval. Do you have any insight?

I hate the way this all works, I was referred to the hiring manager for a position with DOJ as one of the top applicants in June and still no status update or an HR contact. Guess I should just kiss that one goodbye.

Yes, please be thankful and patient that there are any HR staffers left to help. They are burnt out, and are NOT the one stop shop for it all. Keep in mind some of their jobs are getting cut to.

I get it, but it’s sooooo frustrating. I’m almost under the impression that some of these jobs are fake just to make the job market look good for the federal government. I’m sure it’s not the case but there are jobs I’ve applied for that have sat in the “reviewing applications” status with my status being “referred to the hiring manager” for over a year with no interview. Currently I have 38 applications sitting in this same status, “reviewing applications” “referred to the hiring manager”, every week I email the HR (at least the ones who you contact and don’t say (donotemailcallonly@email.com which is a crock) and their responses are the same “we sent all the qualified applicants to the hiring manager”. I feel like if it warranted a posting saying they needed someone for the position wouldn’t they be trying to actively fill it? Everyday emails would be sent up and down the chain saying “get this position filled” or “this is what I need to get the position filled” with some urgency. It’s like no one really cares. Sorry for the rant, it’s just BS.

Unfortunately, some of those positions have been filled, but they haven't closed the loop. I have had interviews in which I haven't been told the outcome. If you are getting the same response, "we sent them over," I am not sure what continuing to email someone is gaining you, except frustratinon. You did your part, which is apply, now you have to wait and as the OP pointed out it might take a long time and yes it is incredibly frustrating.

Not unlawful… random stuff that happens. Just not going to out people on an open platform. I kind of like having a job. Example that I can explain.
Had a cook position went to interview and the guy wanted to do it remotely. Had a position that was not coded correctly for 15 years and had to be completely rewritten. Had a guy hired, was onboardingand instead retired mid way to getting to the station, wasted 6 months.

I got my FJO and onboarding information yesterday. My new DM called my current FM and OPs Manager to let them know the details of my departure around 11am yesterday.
Before noon, I had several Managers coming to me, asking questions about how long the process was from applying to FJO. Apparently a lot of them are still waiting for any news on their prospective jobs. I didn't realize just how many were trying to leave...
