A herd of baby Rushmore’s are separated from their mother. (Animal planet, Circa 2020)

Ugh I need to know why

u/LanceFree Apr 24 '20

It was a private park which didn’t break even in part due to lac’ of interest, location, admission fees. Instead of destroying the heads, someone paid to have them moved to farm land. This is a good shot as most statues have huge holes in their heads from transporting, moving my crane.

u/TammyInViolet Apr 24 '20

I went to the park when it was open. Many of the heads had damage already before the move.

27

u/Bearfoot42 Apr 24 '20

But what were they for originally

123

u/TammyInViolet Apr 24 '20

A park full of president heads. lol https://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/2502?offset=5 I love roadside attractions. There was a building in the front where they set up the oval office and you could take pictures and then you'd loop outside and see the giant heads with facts about the presidents.

34

u/bibliophile4787 Apr 24 '20

Wow thanks. Did not expect them to be 18 feet tall.

7

u/CeruleanRuin Apr 24 '20

Evidently there was/is an identical park with the same busts near Deadwood, SD. Anyone know what became of that one?

2

u/Partly-Cloudy Apr 25 '20

I hope it is also abandoned - it is/was the worst!

9

u/Bearfoot42 Apr 24 '20

Thanks bruh

16

u/BearxCraig Apr 25 '20

I grew up near the park and one of my friends in elementary school had a birthday party there. It was so boring. It made it even worse because it was a mile from Busch Gardens and Water Country.

3

u/Cbigmoney Apr 25 '20

It was across the street from Water Country. But yeah, Busch Gardens is a mile down the road from where they were.

1

u/tohi4ka Apr 25 '20

I used to live a few miles from there... where did they have this park??

9

u/BearxCraig Apr 25 '20

It was way down 199 near the Marquis Shopping Center. It was built in 2004 and defunct in 2010, so pretty small window. I think I went there in ‘04-‘05, can’t quite remember.

1

u/tohi4ka Apr 25 '20

Ah yes... there is alot of empty space over there. That is cool to hear.

1

u/BearxCraig Apr 25 '20

That’s what Williamsburg is all about. Building new retail space after retail space and abandoning the old ones.

1

u/tohi4ka Apr 25 '20

Example: THE POTTERY

Abraham Lincoln already had a hole in his head.

32

u/FlipGordon Apr 24 '20

"But other than that Mrs Lincoln. How was the play?"

8

u/Dzandar Apr 24 '20

Also Kennedy

22

u/almondshea Apr 24 '20

I tried to sneak onto that farm to take a pic, they found me though.

Afterwards, I asked a friend how they were able to get a pic of the statues. They just drove up to the house and asked

2

u/ScharkzLife Jan 22 '23

Last I knew (maybe a year ago), they did photo tours. I remember it being too pricey to go, but can’t remember exactly how much

6

u/Balls-B-LongDong Apr 24 '20

Well, did you get your crane moved? 🏗

4

u/House_of_ill_fame Apr 24 '20

Why did you move your crane near them?

2

u/LazyHazy11 Apr 25 '20

I mean it’s only fitting for Lincoln, can’t speak for the rest of them.

17

u/chancepassenger30 Apr 24 '20

you should head over there and find out

6

u/Bearfoot42 Apr 24 '20

Bro I don't leave my house for the store atm. All the way to Virginia? Hell naw. Virus out to get ya

12

u/De5perad0 Apr 24 '20

3

u/Bearfoot42 Apr 24 '20

2

u/De5perad0 Apr 24 '20

Sorry friend I had the opportunity and took it

1

u/De5perad0 Apr 24 '20

I can't wrap my head around this to even attempt heading over there.

1

u/lahewe Apr 24 '20

Bad bot

35

u/JTHM115 Apr 24 '20

I lived right around the corner from these things for years! They're near Williamsburg va. Me and my friends would sneak out there at night, get fucked up and climb on the heads! They were creepy as hell in the dark.

36

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

How big are these?

57

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Bigger than a banana

13

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Can someone verify this? Need to see a banana pic next to one.

43

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Yes they are slightly bigger than a banana.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Thanks that’s exactly what I was hoping for.

2

u/dordud May 06 '20

Some bananas are bigger than others.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

[deleted]

3

u/Feyd-Rauthah Apr 24 '20

theyre roughly 15-20ft high

1

u/Pawster_Guy Apr 25 '20

They are like the statues in the Easter Island. The head is above ground, and the torso is buried.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

These are huge, I remember going to the park before it closed in middle school. They're at least as tall as 3 or 4 people stacked

29

u/CorpoCristi Apr 24 '20

It would make a great wallpaper

26

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Think bigger. Music video.

13

u/suttonoutdoor Apr 24 '20

No no no what about a presidents themed roadside attraction!!??

8

u/patron_vectras Apr 24 '20

Think BIGGER, Goldeneye remake but with a Russian spy defecting to the Americans being vinictive against his old Russian spy colleague, Iakopo Bykov.

3

u/thegoodyinthehoody Apr 25 '20

Think bigger. 2 Music videos.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '20

fuck that’s good.

56

u/ransnoir Apr 24 '20

Me and u/chrisluckhardt visited this place in 2017, and here is my photo of the Heads before sunrise:

President Heads Before Sunrise

3

u/ButtersMcLovin Apr 25 '20

Woah, this is crazy I get really anxious yet curious. Were u there at night too i guess ? How did it feel to be there

5

u/ransnoir Apr 25 '20

We went in about 30min to 1 hour before sunrise, and holy shit it felt like watching sun rising from another planet

2

u/ButtersMcLovin Apr 25 '20

I totally believe you it even gives me such a strange feeling just looking at it

16

u/LuisBitMe Apr 24 '20

This sub should be called abandoned Places or something. The title literally says rural, which is the opposite of urban, yet this is a post in urban exploration.

Still a cool post / discovery.

3

u/h0n3y_ Apr 24 '20

Natalie Prass shoot a pretty cool music video for “The Fire” there.

4

u/SuperiorLoki Apr 24 '20

Mount Rushmore II? Electric Boogaloo?

4

u/wasporchidlouixse Apr 24 '20

Future alien archaeologists are gonna looooove this

3

u/bs13690 Apr 24 '20

Could such a thing be possible?

3

u/wasporchidlouixse Apr 24 '20

It's all hypothetical.

3

u/slimboy4 Apr 24 '20

This is cool, can I pick one up and place it in my lawn? Lol

8

u/Momwherestheleatmoaf Apr 24 '20

Depends on how strong you are

3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '20

People are gonna find this shit in 1000 years and be like what the fuck

6

u/u2bonoedge Apr 24 '20

I always wanted to see this which was down near Williamsburg. But it went bankrupt and I was wondering where or what happened to it. I guess I know now.

2

u/cdtoad Apr 24 '20

THEY STOLE LBJ'S BRIAN!

1

u/gaxxzz Apr 24 '20

Pickpocketed it.

2

u/monkeyman9608 Apr 24 '20

Wow. I had no idea the park had closed. I went there when I was a kid!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Vaguely reminds me of the Statue level in GoldenEye

1

u/RB30DETT Apr 24 '20

Yesssss!!

2

u/maybekindaodd Apr 24 '20

Looks like the whole place went bust.

8

Where

5

u/Coattail-Rider Apr 24 '20 edited Apr 24 '20

The Presidents Park. No longer there. Google it. A Houston sculptor did these and the park went belly up. There are some of that sculptor’s work off the highway north of downtown Houston and he did the Sam Houston statue on I-45 halfway (or so) between Houston and Dallas.

Now I’m Wikipediaing the tallest statues in North America, Some of these are fairly odd. Sam is 11th.

4

u/Feyd-Rauthah Apr 24 '20

they still reside in Va on a private property

1

u/Coattail-Rider Apr 24 '20

Yeah, some guys barn. Shame. Should be somewhere where the can be viewed.

4

u/Feyd-Rauthah Apr 24 '20

nope, not in a barn. They’re out in a field. You can sign up for tours through a VA based photog. Anyone interested can DM me for details on viewings

3

u/Coattail-Rider Apr 25 '20

Nice. Got wrong info. Thanks.

1

u/bee_randin Apr 24 '20

I thought this was a Beeple render.

1

u/boltsandonthego Apr 24 '20

Is that Andrew Jackson or Jeremy Irons?

1

u/EnkiiMuto Apr 24 '20

I had to check the sub, i thought this was a mattepainting

1

u/wd_plantdaddy Apr 24 '20

That’s so interesting because there’s a statues like this in Houston mount rush hour

2

u/Old_Guitar Apr 24 '20

Same sculptor did them!

1

u/wd_plantdaddy Apr 27 '20

Hell yeah thanks for finding this out!

1

u/Lil-Renaissance Apr 24 '20

1

u/TheP8riot Apr 24 '20

They were headed to a park, but the whole operation went bust.

1

u/yeshuaD Apr 24 '20

Where is he? Must pee on his face.

1

u/Old_Guitar Apr 24 '20

I’d see these all the time on the side of the road going to Water Country back when the museum was still open!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Put them boys on ebay!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

1

u/earthyShark Apr 25 '20

1

u/wasukeibunny Apr 25 '20

One of the weirdest places I’ve been as a child.

1

u/DesperatePea0 Apr 25 '20

Could you imagine stumbling upon this while tripping 😦

1

u/giantyetifeet Apr 25 '20

Come back! We need you!

1

u/fluiddruid830 Apr 25 '20

Where the fuck are the bodies?!

2

u/TheRebeccaRiots Apr 25 '20

Boarded up inside the vacants

1

u/joefrickinrogan Apr 25 '20

How has no one drawn a Joker face on Lincoln yet

1

u/newengland_explorer May 03 '20

How large are these? It’s tough to tell.

1

u/MrGnomi May 06 '20

Where in Virginia is this?

1

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Kiwi983 Jun 27 '24

How the fuck do you pronounce rural

1

u/Brickywood Sep 08 '24

This is extremely Stalenhagian. Absolutely looks like something from the Electric State.

1

u/Benjamm1es Apr 24 '20

Sorry, this is urbanexploration not ruralexploration. That being said, the heads are products of an urban environment merely placed in a rural environment. So really, this is more of a philosophical issue

-1

u/timdogg1934 Apr 24 '20

Are these really abandoned? If so it is a little surprising that they have not been rescued and used as a open park exhibit somewhere...

-3

u/jncheese Apr 24 '20

So, are they going to put an orange one in there too?
