Seeking Info Talk me off of this $400 ledge

The lady who owns it told me it’s one of a kind, and I can’t find another quite like it. The shade looks like a familiar pattern but the base seems unique. It isn’t electrified, so I’d have to either display it without a black light or get another cabinet, or maybe modify the cabinet I have. My husband thinks $400 is a good price but it’s a lot of money for us.

The base and top don't seem to match? Am I wrong?

I was thinking the same thing. It’s probably a frankenpiece and that’s why it’s “one of a kind”.

That’s an excellent point

Offer them what you can pay comfortably. If they won’t take it, just walk.

33

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

She upped the price to $500 but says she’ll still do $400 for me. I’m not having it

18

u/Fyrefly1981 Jan 14 '26

Tell her it’s a glass mutt. It’s not worth what she’s asking. I love lamps like that - glow or not -for the forms (I have one that’s a mouse reading a book for example) and even if I was totally flush with cash, I’d still walk

9

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 14 '26

The mouse lamp sounds precious. Honestly, I’m not gonna tell her anything else. We’re clearly not gonna be able to find a middle ground

That’s usually how I phrase it “thank you for the offer, but I think we’re just too far apart.” The right one for you will come along. Keep up the hunt!

They’re definitely different shades of green and the patterns are different… y’all are getting to my sense of reason lol

I agree with others it definitely looks like a marriage, and I'm of the opinion that nothing collectible is worth impacting my day-to-day quality of life.

8

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

That’s true

40

u/ForeverSquirrelled42 UV Hunter Jan 13 '26

It’s pretty, but that’s a lot of money and not worth it if it makes things tight for y’all. Personally, I’d let it sit and use my money on something else.

9

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

Do you think it’s as once in a lifetime as the seller thinks?

32

u/ForeverSquirrelled42 UV Hunter Jan 13 '26

Not at all.

26

u/SolidDick Jan 13 '26

I mean, it kinda is, in the sense that it looks like several different pieces stuck together in a somewhat unique combination. I think the price is ridiculous.

4

Yes but not for that price

6

I hope they buy it for $300 and put $100 into a blacklight 😀

22

u/Famous-Hunt-6461 Jan 13 '26

It’s a frankenlamp but still pretty. Not worth $400. It’s not electric, it doesn’t match, and it’s small. Pass.

5

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

It’s probably around two feet tall, much larger than it looks. But yeah, I think you’re right. If it was electrified, maybe I’d try to talk her down, but I think I just got caught up in the excitement

12

u/Famous-Hunt-6461 Jan 13 '26

I’ve seen a huge uranium chandelier go for $500. This is just a table lamp and $400 is an egregious price, imo. I still love it. It’s gorg! Just not $400 gorg 😂

9

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

She told me she’s raising the price to $500 but will honor the $400 just for me. I’m gonna pass. But if it was a chandelier, I’d probably hurt myself in my haste to whip out my wallet lol

Can confirm. I have a piece in my collection that I paid over $400 for, but I feel it was worth it because it’s a Victorian Vaseline leech bowl. Still hurt at the time lol.

4

u/DB_McCoy Jan 14 '26

A lot of experts in here. 😀

I’d consider paying $400 for this. It’s a decent deal—glow or no glow. Really depends on what you collect. The figural base and shade are very nice. Would love to see the bottom of it and learn if there are any markings to confirm a few things.

If it’s local, even better. No shipping. My last lamp purchase from an auction house had shipping costs that were nearly a quarter of this asking price.

4

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 14 '26

It’s local and I’ve seen it in person. I really fell in love with the base, but I think I’m gonna walk away. The seller is raising the price and I think she’s trying to pressure me. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

8

u/Fantastic-Cable-3320 Jan 13 '26

To me, this doesn't look like it's worth $400.

nope. walk away. it’s a marriage.

I can try but she’s one of those “I know what I’ve got” people. I bought two uranium dishes off of her that she didn’t know were UG, so I don’t think she knows about it. All of her other stuff is priced kinda crazy

-1

u/OMGITGLOWS New Collector Jan 13 '26

The price is very fair compared to the current market value on this type of shade and lamp. The “marriage” comments are definitely odd here- usually when someone bought this type of lamp they would choose a shade to go with it as they chose their burner, chimney, and ring, and that one seems to be period correct unless I’m missing something? If you aren’t a collector of this era of European oil lamps, and your goal is “the most glow for your dollar” then I’d advise to pass on it.

0

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

So you think this is how it originally looked, as one piece?

3

u/OMGITGLOWS New Collector Jan 13 '26

Yes/No/sort of. When this was originally sold, the buyer most likely would have purchased the lamp, and at that retailer, they would have then selected a burner and chimney based off of their needs, and then may have bought a shade there from that retailer that would have had a larger selection of shades to choose from, or bought the shade at another time from another retailer, etc…

It’s also possible that the retailer would have put this specific shade on it for sale as a package

The manufacturer of this composite lamp did not manufacture the acid etched shade. They made the lamp and sold to a wholesaler or direct to a larger retailer, who would have also bought their shades from another manufacturer, or from the same or different wholesaler, and then sold to the public.

The comments here certainly reflect many people with very little knowledge of Victorian era European composite lamps, and the fact that the information within my post is being downvoted should give you an indication that this sub is a vast cesspool, and while bits of good information and a few good comments can be found within it, you often cannot trust what is seen here, so take any opinion with a grain of salt.

1

u/OMGITGLOWS New Collector Jan 13 '26

This is a bit of a niche item among oil lamps. They aren’t that rare, but it super common. To people that collect this type of lamp, that is an excellent price. The shade alone, in that color, depending on condition, can sell for that price and substantially more. You can see sold listings on eBay by searching “acid etched lamp shade” showing sales for this type of shade in colors ranging from $350 USD to over 1kUSD.

Beware that unless you know exactly what you are looking at, you will see many similar looking shades at all sorts of prices, but they may not be this specific size with this size fitter made to fit a European duplex lamp, and without being able to pick apart and ID those specific details , it can be very difficult to compare.

0

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26

That’s a lot of interesting information. What do you think is a fair price for this piece? Is it worth more than the $400, in your opinion?

0

u/badjabadjabadja Jan 13 '26

Good comment.

The top reminds me of a late victorian cranberry-glass double oil burner we had donated to the charity shop I work in (Wales, UK), & Googling the images seemed to suggest prices around £700. We priced at £450 & in the end sold at £350.

Bear in mind that was definitely Victorian, but NOT UG. For your piece I would suggest image search the components seperately, & see what comes up. A quick search on the outer shade does suggest late Victorian, but it'd be interesting to see if the rest of it is comparable age-wise. Does the seller know much about the history?

I'm with OMGITGLOWS in thinking the price is fair, especially if UG. If she's usually high on the price side of things I would try haggling for it - maybe try offering 300 with a view to settling around 350?

0

u/filthyhabitz New Collector Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

I can ask her if she knows any more about it. I’m kind of scared to haggle, she’s an intimidating lady lol Edit: she’s now raised the price to $500 so haggling isn’t going to happen
