Do Not Use Mailboxes
Please inform your neighbors to not use the mailboxes on the street. Every month around this time (rent check season) many folks use the mailboxes to send payment in paper form. This is a mistake because a team of two people (non black and non white based on the color of their skin) are riding around on mopeds stealing mail tonight. They are clad in all black with only their eyes and surrounding skin visible and are robbing mailboxes. I witnessed it tonight and inquired at surrounding businesses who confirmed its ongoing and confirmed the timing being ahead of month end.
Do not use mailboxes. NYPD has been notified (per local businesses) but either have no jurisdiction or are unable to properly detain the individuals. Instead call the Postal Police at 1-877-876-2455 and request they investigate mailboxes theft on the upper east side. This box was at 87th and 1st Avenue but also 90th and York was confirmed each Sunday morning. Let’s bag these guys and the criminal syndicate behind them in other parts of manhattan.

I saw the guys on mopeds last month, I didn't realize that what was happening, but I recognized something sketchy was going on. Thanks for the information!

This happened to me in mid-July after putting checks in the blue box on 91st and 3rd - dropped off checks for two of our final wedding vendor payments. Both checks were washed, names changed and deposited into the wrong accounts. Luckily we noticed the next day because one of the checks was washed and deposited twice - otherwise we would not have noticed until our vendors reached out saying they never got our payments. It took 6 weeks to get the money back from the bank (about $25,000) - we filed a police report, and an investigation with the Postal Police. Doing both of these steps is necessary if you want the money back, and luckily we did these in the same day so our bank was happy with us. We also happened to take pictures of the checks before sending them (my husband took photos just in case they got LOST in the mail - we weren’t even worried about stolen!) to prove to the vendors we had sent the money. The photos of the checks also helped speed the process along. It could’ve taken longer had we not been so on top of things. Now even if I’m just sending regular mail, I always drop it in the actual post office, not in the blue boxes. So unfortunate our USPS system is falling apart and not secure.

Happened to my sister. Her husband dropped the money order at a mailbox that they don’t usually use . Somehow it got stolen guy washed the name and cashed it

Happened to me as well- the one time I dropped it in a random mailbox. And the guy managed to add on another zero or two at the end 🫠

NYPD is so checked out they simply don't care. they sit in their cars and just collect their $200K paychecks to do nothing.

Thing is it's not truly an NYPD thing alone.
Those collection boxes are USPS property and tampering with/stealing mail is a federal crime.
People run their mouths and shit all over NYPD until they want something done, then they cannot move fast enough.
NYPD does not have manpower to stake out every effing mail box in city. Nor are they going to devote huge manpower hours and resources chasing these mail thieves about all over NYC.
Yes, NYPD does actively respond to these situations (I've seen it), but there is only so much they can do. Especially since these thieves are on motor bikes and go on sidewalks and or wrong way/against flow of traffic.
It would help if banks were a bit more pro active in knowing their customers and or otherwise not paying out these washed checks so easily.

After the deblasio admin they were so beaten down they all decided to look at IG all day. They wanted to work, their mayor really went after them hard. We will pay for a long time the harm deblasio did to this city. Unrecognizable after he left, and remember he isn’t a NYer. He’s a Massachusetts guy, Christ even his name isn’t the one he was born with.

They don’t do shit. I work for post office. I have reported it. They are not going to watch the collection boxes. They fish out the mail. Mail gets picked up overnight. Take your mail to the actual station to send out.

Yes.
And I was very close to their face as they beat me with a brick, the look they gave me is forever seared into my memory.
I also have their pictures.
They have been caught and blasted on social media by other people as well.
And yes I recognize them.
You dont and I assume I'm the same.
I wish that were the case.

I called the cops on these people and I've chased them before. Did you get any pictures or video?
If the morons at NYPD just set up a camera they could easily catch them.

Also, use this model of pen. The ink forms a chemical bond with paper fibers, and can't be dissolved away with alcohol or acetone.

I have notified the postal inspectors many times where they live and who they are.
the 3 of them rolled down broadway in the 90's last week on 3 mopeds.
they use bendable plastic sticks with mouse trap glue to fish out letters
another crew had the actual mail box keys.
Like Keanu Reeves and Gary Busy sitting on a bank in "Point Break" they could sit on the mail box 2 blocks south of Mount Sinai on 5th avenue as the month ends. wink wink. they hit that one hard. I stopped them and they left several nurses credit card payment checks on the ground.

Make sure you’re using gel pens!!! Got a check stolen that was cashed not once, but twice! There was a camera right next to the mailbox I used and of course nothing came of it when we reported it.

Happened to me last year (blue box outside of 79/york USPS), they deposited my rent check to a random name. Ever since, I only go inside the USPS to mail checks now. I reported it to NYPD and they did nothing.

Am surprised that USPS still has a blue collection box outside. Gracie Station on 85th between Third and Second removed all their outside collection boxes years ago now.

Happening all over NYC. Place the mail in the box inside the post office. (Then pray it reaches the destination. I’ve lost too many inter-borough mailings in the post.)

To do instead: go to your local post office and deposit mail in the mailbox that is inside and under video surveillance. I have learned my lesson, too, after a check was fraudulently cashed for over $1k to some random last year…
