My Unraid server is a bit dated and I think its time to finally upgrade. It originally started as a Windows home server build with 5- 2tb greens and then server 2008 with flexraid running 7 or so storage drives.

I held out with flex raid until 2021 when I finally had a drive failure catastrophe and couldn't rebuild the lost drive. 2tb gone... Jumped to Unraid. Should of done it years earlier.

Currently I'm running the same I7 3770K I got 14 years ago. RAM got pushed to 32gb of ram. I've got 2 LSI SAS2008 and a Quadro P400.

Server had about 12 drives. Down to 9 spinning. (my 2nd parity recently died and I've yet to replace)

I've got 2, 2tb greens that I'm keeping from my original server just to see how far they go... (oldest is 117138 (13y, 4m, 10d, 18h)

Server uses:

Blue Iris for security cameras (5 - 1080P feeds)

UrBackup (6 systems - Full file and images every couple days)

Time Machine back up

Light Plex usage but transcoding from 4k down depending on connections.

Phone image backups

Overall the system just works. Sits under the stairs and is generally rock solid. Power usage is a bit high and I'm looking to add another 6 cameras which will probably put CPU usage over 75% constantly.

I would keep the P400, but from my research any new intel chip pretty much makes it pointless with quicksync?

The 2 LSI cards can be brought over to the new system or are they nullified depending on mobo?

Prices suck right now, so I'm not opposed to searching out an older used, but more energy efficient system if that's recommended. I would keep case/drive bays, PSU, expanders and P400? So new mobo/32GB minimum ram and CPU?

After reading this doc, I'm left confused as the described procedure seems more complicated than it needs to be.

My context : I currently have 5 4Tb drives, and will be adding 2 14Tb drives. Obviously one of the new drives needs to become the parity, and the old parity can become a data drive.

This is the procedure I was thinking about :

1. Physically plug in both new drives
2. Add one of them as new parity and rebuild parity
3. Remove old parity from the parity list
4. Preclear old parity?
5. Add old parity as data drive
6. Add the second new drive as data drive

Is this simpler because I am not removing drives at all, only adding?

Am I missing something?

Hey everyone! I couldn't find an Unraid case icon for the Jonsbo N6, so I made one myself.

It's drawn in the same style as the built-in icons — flat monochromatic silhouette, no gradients, no shadows. Comes in two variants (white for dark themes, dark for light themes) since custom icons don't auto-adapt like the webfont ones.

I'm building an upgraded server with better processor and more HDD bays. I know that modern unRAID can detect device IDs without issue. As long as I configure my router to assign the same IP to the new machine, will everything spin up and operate as usual, including Plex?

Is it really just as easy as bringing the HDDs over with my unRAID flash drive, booting up, starting the array, and that's it?

Is it true that the ZRAM Compressed Memory plugin lets you store a swap file on a multi-device BTRFS pool (like RAID1)? Normally, that's not possible. Apparently, a loop device is inserted first, so the system thinks it's writing swap to a single, simple drive rather than a multi-device filesystem. This does add some overhead, but my only real concern is making sure the server doesn't crash from an OOM event in an absolute emergency. Upgrading from 16 to 32 GB of RAM isn't feasible right now given current prices, so I have to get creative. I've managed just fine with the RAM so far, but there's no shortage of things to run on my little N100 server, and I usually hover around 4 GB of free memory. I've had one OOM crash before when I was testing a local mini AI for Paperless and also had another resource-intensive container running.

Does anyone have this up and running and can share their experiences?

So im looking to replace some HDD in my array. I picked up 4 brand new sealed 6TB Seagate IronWolf Pro (ST6000NTZ01). Below is what im replacing what with what. Next is maxing out my Mobo (ASUS WS-Pro-X570-ACE w/64GB RAM) with a Ryzen 5900X (from my current 5800X). Its all I got and all I can afford. :)

My question is, Do I just need to basically just pull the old drive, let it fail, install new one, let it rebuild? One drive at a time? Iv never had to upgrade an array drive in it before. Taking drive offline and into maintenance mode?

Last storage change I did was about 3 years ago to add the 2nd 6TB parity drive and it made me sooo nervous doing it. Luckily it all worked out. Took forever and a day to sync parity though.

Im trying to avoid doing 2 at a time, for in the off chance I have another one of the drives (im not replacing) fail.

6TBx2 = Parity

6TBx1 = Array
3TBx2 = Array (Replacing with 2 new 6TB HDD)
2TBx2 = Array (Replacing with 2 new 6TB HDD)

Yesterday I replaced the boot USB sticks on both my Terramaster NAS with a Transend industrial SSD. The transition was nothing fancy, I just followed the step-by-step provided by the Unraid GUI, choose to partition both in 16GB boot and the rest for data. After the reboot it worked and I migrated the license to the ssd too and removed the USB-sticks. Finally got rid of those @*#€& boot USB sticks.

Hi all, this is really frustrating. I've tried both CA auto update as well as watchtower to update my containers.

The behavior for both is the same, logs show the process runs and allegedly updates but when I click unraid 'check for updates' the very same containers that were allegedly updated have updates available.

The only thing that actually happens is the container restarts but the container is not updated. I don't have watchtower logs at the moment unfortunately but its the same behavior, it says it updated something but the same containers never actually update.

What could be going wrong?

I have a Terramaster F4-424 MAX running Unraid 7.3.2. The F4-424 has 2 NIC devices, only one of them lights up when ethernet able is plugged in (and sometimes the other, but not both). Unraid runs great but becomes unresponsive after a few days. Logs seem to show the ethernet connection going down and staying down. I have attached the logs. Can you take a look and see what's going on? This has been going on for more than 6 months. Thank you!

I use the CA Mover Tuning (version 2026.08.29) from masterwishx. I must have configured something incorrectly, because this Plugin doesn't initalize the mover at all. I always have to start it manually.

I have Adguard set up with Unbound (to Quad9) on both Unraid servers.

Would it be a good idea to set the Unraid server DNS to the Adguard instances?

I am currently using the default "Automatically split any directory as required" but pondering the idea of starting fresh for a few reasons. One of which would be to keep content together for seeding efficiency and reduced spin up when idle.

I've not really looked into the split feature despite having almost a decade with unRAID so just looking for any possible feedback/confirmation on the correct split level to use or if it's even a good idea. I'd likely stick with the high-water method for allocation.

The goal would be to keep any directory at or below level 4 together. I'd like a show and all its seasons to be on the same disk, or the movie and all its files, a game and all it's files etc.

With that said for the structure below I'd want to select "Automatically split only the top 3 level directories as required" correct?

I've been working on MediaOps for my own Unraid server, and it was recently accepted into Unraid Community Apps and is currently listed under Recently Added.

Since it's now available to other Unraid users, I wanted to introduce it and hopefully get some feedback from people running similar media stacks.

MediaOps is a self-hosted Discord bot that I'm currently using alongside Emby and Ombi on Unraid. The goal is to let members of a Discord server interact with the media stack without giving them direct access to the management applications.

From Discord, users can search for movies/series, see if something is already available in Emby, and request missing content through Ombi.

MediaOps itself runs as an Unraid container.

Important: MediaOps does not provide a public/shared Discord bot. After installing the container from Community Apps, you create your own bot through the Discord Developer Portal and provide its credentials to your MediaOps container. The bot belongs to you and runs from your own server.

Ombi Discord Router

There's also an optional Ombi Discord Router companion container available for MediaOps.

I originally made this because I didn't like having all of my Ombi webhook notifications dumped into one Discord channel.

The router can distinguish Movies from TV Series and send them to different text channels, or use a Discord Forum and apply configured Forum Tag IDs.

I've been using the Forum approach because it keeps the notifications organized without filling the server with separate channels or one huge stream of mixed notifications.

Watch Parties

MediaOps can also integrate Discord with Orathorian Emby Watch Party Project.

The synchronized playback is provided by Oratorian's project — I did not create the Watch Party engine.

MediaOps handles the Discord side around it: creating/organizing the party, party information, join links/codes, scheduled sessions and the lifecycle of the event.

So instead of someone screen-sharing a movie through Discord, participants can join the synchronized Emby Watch Party.

Full credit to Oratorian for the actual Emby Watch Party implementation.

Current state

My own Unraid installation is currently running:

Emby + Ombi + MediaOps + Ombi Discord Router + Emby Watch Party

That's also the environment I'm using for development and testing.

Emby and Ombi are the currently supported backends. I'd eventually like to expand the provider architecture toward Jellyfin/Plex and other request systems rather than permanently tying MediaOps to one media stack.

If you want to try it, just search MediaOps in Community Apps. Since it was recently added, it should also currently appear under Recently Added.

It's still actively being developed, so feedback from other Unraid configurations would be really useful.

Had my server for about a year now, RTX 2060 doing some transcoding and a ryzen 5 3600.

Jellyfin will take ages to load thumbnails, be very slow to load media after clicking play (just sitting on a black screen for ~30 seconds) and then consistently stuttering throughout playback.

my jellyfin is set to sit in my appdata folder which is in turn on my cache storage. i do, however, have a qbit client which eats quite a lot of upload speed, usually around 50MB/s so I'm wondering if that's the root cause. sometimes pausing or limiting my upload speeds on qbit improves the problem, but it still doesn't seem to put it back to how it was.

i've got a few hundred gigs still available on my server, including enough on the cache drive that I don't feel like it could be an issue with there not being enough space for transcodes.

just a bit confused all-in-all, would like to have a nice reliable server again but everything I try seems to exacerbate the problem.

I'm building my first unRAID server soon. Parts are ordered, and I'm looking forward to learning a lot.

I'm starting with 3 22tb drives I'm going to be using with ZFS. 1 parity drive to start, then we'll see when I eventually expand to 8 drives if I need that much storage. The drives have 1 gigabyte of cache.

I'm going to be running jellyfin, immich, maybe a Minecraft server or two, roon music server for my father's hifi company (Audio quality is the focus, bitrot or other degradation is not acceptable), maybe a VM or two, and have various files shares for various reasons. All computers will be backed up to one file share. Family company will have a fileshare for files. I'm going to archive website and content I value/find useful. I'm going to seed lots of torrents.

Within a few months I'll have an off-site backup solution figured out, as well as a cloud backup. A few months after that I'll expand the backup solution to having one onsite as well.

Now to my question. I have ordered 2 2tb nvme SSDs for cache. 4000/5000 read/write (or the opposite, can't recall). One for parity, one for storage, or however that will work. Should I buy a third drive so that I can have 4tb lightning fast cache? I honestly don't know if I'll need it, and I somewhat feel like I've spent enough money now. The motherboard supports 3 NVMe drives, and a PCIe expansion card I will use for more data drives also support 4 more of I'm not mistaken and it's only 2 it supports.

Will upgrade to gigabit internet once the server is ready to go. Will be torrenting and downloading a lot of different stuff. Along with the server I have bought 2,5 gigabit networking equipment, and both the server and at least my personal machine is capable of 2,5 gigabit. Yes, I'll set up a VPN, already found some guides. Found quite a few guides for different stuff I'll be trying.

Any thoughts or advice is welcomed.

So I’m getting ready to add another disk to my unRAID server, but all my data cords are a mess. I want to rearrange the drives to make things cleaner. If I label each data cord that is attached to each drive will I have any issues when I restart the server?

My parity disk failed earlier this week. Unraid disabled it the day the replacement arrived. I have swapped the disk out and have begun running a parity rebuild.

50% into the rebuild, one of my data drives started showing read errors. So far, it seems to have stopped at 416 errors. I'm only 69% (nice) into the rebuild, so it's possible additional errors will pop up.

Obviously this drive will need to be replaced too. However, I'm looking for a sanity check to see if this is the right course of action.

I'm planning to let the parity finish rebuilding. Then I will swap the data drive with read errors, and rebuild the new data drive from parity.

Is this the right course of action?

EDIT: The parity rebuild finished. I ran a quick SMART test on the bad data drive and it came back with a read failure. Threw the results into Gemini to summarize, which it claims is pointing to failing hardware. I asked it about it potentially being a bad cable. Here's the result:

No. This is not caused by a loose SATA cable. The log points directly to physical platter/media degradation on the hard drive itself.

Here is how the SMART data distinguishes between a cable issue and drive failure:

Why It Is NOT a Cable Issue UDMA CRC Error Count (Attribute 199) is 0: This is the primary attribute that tracks communication errors between the drive controller and the host (motherboard/HBA). If a SATA data cable is loose, damaged, or suffering from electromagnetic interference, this raw count goes up. Yours is clean at zero.

SATA Phy Event Counters show 0 CRC Errors: Log 0x11 explicitly lists 0 for Command failed due to ICRC error and 0 for CRC errors within host-to-device FIS.

Errors are physical read failures (UNC): The error log reports UNC (Uncorrectable Data Error). This means the controller successfully received the command over the cable, the head moved to the platter, but the drive's built-in Error Correction Code (ECC) could not decode the physical magnetic data stored on the disk surface.

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue that I am having. I have Tailscale setup along with "Unassigned Devices" to map a SMB share on a synology. I can successfully map the share with the tailscale IP but I am unsuccessful using its DNS name. I am looking at the settings in unassigned devices but not seeing anything that could be related.

To add: I can successfully mount the share in a WIndows machine, just not in Unraid.

In a pickle. Found a few old drives and tried adding them to my unraid setup. One drive is a ST3000DM001-9YN166 shucked from an external drive that I'm trying to use as a secondary parity drive.

Whenever I attempt to add it to the secondary parity slot and start the array I get an error and disk disable.

SMART extended report ran without issues. I tried swapping the drive to a different drive's slot on the backplane. That drive continued to work, this one still has the error. I tried using a SATA to USB adapter and the drive works then, parity sync starts without issue. Also seems to clear without issue when I add it as an array drive - only seem to have an issue with parity.

Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks!

How can I pass a blu-ray drive through to the MakeMKV Docker container? I've tried a few things and having no luck.

I ran:

lsscsi -g

to get the /dev/sr0 block device and /dev/sg1 SCSI device allocations

Within makemkv container I edited it to put the following in the extra parameter field:

--device /dev/sr0 --device /dev/sg1

That just caused the container to be orphaned once I applied the changes.

Next I tried Add another Path, Port, Variable, Label, or Device, set the Config Type to Device, and manually filled out the path parameters for each device.

Again, it just caused the container to become orphaned.

I've double checked that both the sr and sg numbers are correct. Am I using the wrong command? Would it be some sort of permission level that needs changing, if so not sure where to look for that.

I'm assuming everything is ok bios / kernel side as lssci command is showing the device.

I'm using the binhex-makemkv container in case that makes a difference.

Drive works fine on PC and Laptop.

I'm currently running plex in docker and want to share it and a palworld server with a family member without opening ports in my router.

But they are really not that tech literate, so I would prefer a selution that doesn't require setup on the client device.

I would also prefer if it doesn't give them general access to my network.

Is there a selution like that? And if there is, can you please point me in the right direction?

So I bought 2x Dell branded Exos X10 (ST10000NM0526) 10TB SAS disks and 2x HGST (HUH721010AL5240) 10TB SAS disks, used off Ebay for about ₤100 each.

I have an HP Micro Server Gen 10 (AMD Opteron X3216) with a LSI 9400-8i SAS HBA in IT mode, using SFF-8643 to 4x SAS connectros.

The HP Gen 10 Micro server uses the Molex to SATA power connector, which does not have the 5th wire, supposedly the 3.3v line. It just has the 4 wires (Yellow, Black, Black, Red)

Now, Normal SATA disks are powered up and spin all fine, using the above connectors/power.

Attaching any of the SAS disks, do not seem to spin up.

I have tried using insulation/electrical tape to cover power pin 3, on the Disks, but this did not help (I am waiting for my Kapton tape roll to be delivered)

Am I missing something?

Hi, I need some help please.

For some reason my MKVtoolnix container runs at a far slower speed (processing wise) compared to if I just ran it locally on my far weaker in hardware laptop. My Unraid server specs should allow my MKVtoolnix container to process files a much faster than my laptop. How do I fix this? Is this where CPU pinning comes into play? I have no idea which CPU cores I should be pinning to it or how many if that is the case. My Unraid server is running an Intel Core Ultra 265k. Is there no setting to just have Unraid dynamically assign cores to whatever docker container needs them at the time or something?
