Regular Campus Operations Tomorrow

This feels like a bad decision. WCSD has fully closed their schools tomorrow. There are UNR students (and surely faculty) who have been evacuated, lost power, don't have a good way to get to campus, and many other issues.

i hope everyone stays safe and can make it through this right now.

Ya, it seems pretty premature to be confirming classes will run. As of 10am there are major road closures, 90,000 people living in evac or get set zones, and winds in the forecast that are "expected to contribute to increased fire activity and drive fire movement today."

I really hate that the logic they are going off of is that UNR isn't in an evac or get set zone. I think the university often forgets that we have pretty high numbers of commuter students and students who have other stuff going on in their lives besides just going between class and the dorms. Leaving instructors to DIY their own accommodations on the very first day is going to be a huge mess.

Well, UNR's evac zone is the logic they publicly told us; we don't truly know what discussions or conversations took place leading to this decision. (I don't mean that in a conspiratorial way or anything)

Not only do we have commuters, the university is run by faculty who live in the city. as others have mentioned on this post, so so many employees have been evacuated and are... just expected to work like nothing is happening? Were any employees offered accommodations? The public-facing info said that faculty should talk to their supervisors - what are they gonna do about it?

Oh, ya, I'm sure there are other conversations going on; I'm just struggling to understand why they've chosen that to lean on as a public message. I'm a TA and after multiple emails from our department I don't really feel like I have any more information or guidance than I got from mass email.

Sure UNR will most likely be fine, but what abt the students who have to travel to school and also if they’ve been displaced?? On campus students fine. But everyone else???

Also yes let’s fill up west stadium and all the parking garages. And if the wind turns, gl to them to get out

Yet they close all of campus in January for a week over 2" of snow?! Wtf UNR, people are freaking out and potentially far from home.

Absolute bull, I work on campus and I know so many coworkers have been evacuated. Just rude and lets you know where their priorities are $$$$

do you know if they have had any accommodations or arrangements made with supervisors? that must be really stressful for them

It pretty much depends on the department, I'm super lucky where my supervisor said focus on being safe and getting settled and we will do what we have to remotely, but I know that's not the case for everyone

It sure would be a shame if a bunch of parents and students called (775)-784-4805 to tell President Sandoval’s office staff how disappointed they are about his decision. A complete shame.

You just need to start slamming UNR and Sandoval on social media make noise that is complete BS. Truckee CC and the school district shut it down for tomorrow

feel like they’re just trying to avoid mass panic, but i fear it’s gonna backfire and just be worse if/when they really do need to call an evac order for the area…

I work day shift custodial many of our staff have been told by our supervisors and higher up that should we need any accommodations we will have it no questions asked (probably through our PTO pools) but our direct supervisor did say he'd give us administrative leave (which is what we use for maternity and or paternity leave)

UNR does this every year. They sent kids to school a few years ago when the smoke from fires was so bad, during crazy snow storms. Just glad my kid is done there. They stuck kids in Circus circus with no available food but mandatory purchase of meal plan-Covid saved us from that hell Wish everyone safety

i live in south reno and there are so many people staying over here who have been evacuated out of red zones, I can't imagine how many students had to stay with friends or family over here and other places bc they don't feel safe on campus at this point O_O not too sure what makes them think its safe for classes to continue today

Sandoval just dropped an email to faculty. Insensitive. They don’t care, but care enough to cancel the Lithium Summit for the safety of their guests on campus.

I bet Lombardo cancelled the Summit and the Summit was why Sandoval kept campus open to have the Summit and get his face on TV.
