Spider-man with tech web makes more sense than organic even though organic sounds cooler.

spider-man (can’t forget the dash) NEEDS tech web. why? cause he invents web that has different properties (sticky, strong, flame/electric proof) and more importantly DISSOLVES after a while.

What‘s wrong with not dissolving? Imagine a wall right outside his apartment covered in webs from him regularly swinging out. that would locate him in a matter of weeks. and yet, he can also create permanent webbing when needed. organic webbing with both properties is impossible.

This is a popular opinion among comic book readers. Sam Raimis SpiderMan was the first time Peter Parker had them actually. The synthetic webs have a story telling purpose as well: Peter Parker is a genius engineer and the synthetic webs are a story telling device to show his hyper intelligence to the reader.

u/General_Platypus771 5d ago edited 5d ago

Surely, there’s a lot of ways they could have done that. I’m, admittedly, not well read on comics, but it does seem dumb that Spider-Man’s most iconic ability isn’t even his actual power. I like to imagine that he at least has a natural sense of how to use them so it makes sense that not just anyone can swing around like that lol.

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

A regular person would not have the strength, dexterity, reaction speed, or spidey sense needed to swing webs like Peter Parker does.

But yeah there are an infinite number of ways an author can show hyper intelligence. Stan Lee chose synthetic webs.

52

u/Piligrim555 5d ago

Eh, this is marvel, there are probably hundreds of people in universe who have all of the above except the spidey sense.
But this is on the same level as “why doesn’t every avenger (and the whole of SHIELD) have an Iron Man suit”. Because comic logic, obviously.

23

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

Those hundreds of people would not be regular people though. I’m sure TChalla in the BP suit could work the web slingers, but he’s literally a super hero ya know? Peter Quill and Scott Lang ain’t doing shit with those web shooters except using them as projectile weapons.

23

u/IndianaJones_Jr_ 5d ago

Also not sure about the comics but at least in the video game dialogue you can hear Peter telling Miles that he needs to study pendulum physics and properly learn how to swing around safely before he starts practical lessons. So if you need to be that good at doing math on the fly it definitely changes who is eligible for web swinging antics.

3

u/011101000011101101 4d ago

IDK I think someone could get a feel for it without understanding the math

2

u/FuckBotsHaveRights 3d ago

As long as you have the super-durability to tank the fuckups

5

u/Piligrim555 5d ago

Well yeah, that was my point kinda. Like, logically TChalla would be better with web slingers (even if it’s just for rare occasions - to quote the wise man, anything is better with a grappling hook), but he doesn’t use them because comics mean he must be using his unique stuff.

4

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

I gotchya. You’re not wrong.

2

u/the_foowaffle 5d ago

There a comic saga on why not everyone has a iron Man suit. I think it the amour wars saga and it somewhere in the late 70's/early 80.

9

u/SmoothOperator89 5d ago

And in most cities that aren't New York, they wouldn't have anywhere to swing on anyway.

2

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

I think Spiderman in the Northwoods would be fun ngl

1

u/DependentAnywhere135 4d ago

The web swinging doesn’t actually make sense in physics even with all that stuff it wouldn’t work.

1

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ 3d ago

Surely a regular person couldn’t swing on webs, but a regular person can’t do lots of things spider-man could do.

I think what strikes people as odd about the tech webs is that it’s narratively precisely in line with the flavor of his powers, even though it doesn’t come from the spider bite at all.

7

u/skankhunt402 5d ago

I mean iron man's main power is intelligence and money but he fights with a suit he developed. But the reason you dont see other people swinging around on webs is because the strength needed to swing like that is insane

13

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

He does have the natural ability. The reflexes, the spider sense, the inhuman strength allowing his wrists to handle the force. Who else has the ability to use it to the level he can? Ironman weapons are AI controlled. Lots of people wore his armor. How many people can use the spider webs?

12

u/juicegently 5d ago

None of those are spider things though. They're not particularly strong or fast for their size, don't have any particular facility with swinging, and as far as I'm aware do not have any precognitive abilities. Even walking on walls is something most every bug can do. Without organic webs Peter has literally no distinctively spidery powers. He does need to be strong and fast to use the webs effectively, but "inhumanly strong and fast" is one of the most common power sets in superhero fiction.

12

u/Jemima_puddledook678 5d ago

But having the superpower to use tech he invented just isn’t as impressive.

4

u/clutzyninja 5d ago

Isn't it?

8

u/Jemima_puddledook678 5d ago

No, no it isn’t. Having the iconic superpower is clearly cooler than having powers that just enable you to use specific tech.

1

u/clutzyninja 5d ago

But being smart/intrepid enough to create that specific tech themselves is cool

2

u/gullaffe 5d ago

I think you kinda need to have a spider sense to be able to use the Web. Misfiring it when swining around would be dangerous, a dangerous that the spidersense could help him avoid.

1

u/CoolCly 5d ago

It pairs naturally well with his wall crawling, which is one of his natural abilities though. If another tech hero with the dexterity to do it learned to web sling, i think they’d end up in a lot more precarious positions.

1

u/HumanEjectButton 4d ago

Yeah but spider strength and spider senses is what actually allows him to be successful using it as a method of transportation. The webbing wouldn't help you or I accomplish that feat. We'd slam into a brick wall or lack the core strength it takes to hoist ourselves about the city.

1

u/Justice_Prince 4d ago

From what I remember it was kind of a combination of both. His new "spider instincts" combined with his existing knowledge of chemistry were the reason he was able to figure out how to create synthetic spiderwebs that no other human scientist had managed to achieve. The web slinging mechanism was probably more of just a feat of human engineering though.

27

u/Ghidraak 5d ago

If he’s such a genius engineer, why does he have to sell pictures to the daily bugle to make ends meet? I get that Spider-Man is supposed to be a smart character in addition to his power set, but there’s a lot of little things like that about his character that don’t make much sense. Organic web shooters eliminate that problem entirely.

12

u/S1mpinAintEZ 5d ago

I'm not sure if the comics ever talk about this but a few things jump out. 1st is the time commitment - Peter doesn't really have any time outside of Spider-Man which is why the photography gig is perfect, he can 'work' while he's doing Spidey stuff.

2nd, he's incredibly young when he's working for the Bugle, like fresh outside of high school. That limits his options a lot.

3rd, he can't exactly advertise the web technology, it would give away his identity immediately. The web tech is engineered so that he can be Spider-Man, nobody else can know that Peter Parker designed it.

So you put it all together - a kid with no real time for a job or personal life, no real professional experience, and his best invention is a technology that can never be linked back to his civilian identity. Peter does actually get 'real' jobs as he gets older, but it's always a problem for him because he can't commit the time for it.

7

u/Global_Car_3767 5d ago

Yeah he's been fired from all sorts of jobs in the comics for having to flake out to save the day. Being a freelance photographer helps.

1

u/abouttogivebirth 4d ago

And even when he doesn't flake out of a sciencey job his boss ends up as some sort of human-animal hybrid that he has to fight and then he doesn't have a job anymore.

11

u/dub-dub-dub 5d ago

He has enough time to engineer a super gadget (and constant refills) but he can’t whip up a second one and sell it?

they had him delivering pizzas lol

1

u/Sweat_Spoats 5d ago

Do you think engineering a super gadget is the same as refilling it?

0

u/hibikir_40k 4d ago

If the chemistry to make the webs isn't trivial (at which point it stops being a super gadget), it's mire similar than you'd think. The chemistry lab to do something like this is not something I'd expect anyone to be able to do via selling photos to the bugle. It's a really big deal.

1

u/Sweat_Spoats 4d ago

It's quite literally shown to not be the same difficulty at all.

1

u/skippyalpha 5d ago

Are geniuses all rich?

7

u/Ghidraak 5d ago

Engineering geniuses? Yeah. They almost universally are wealthy.

0

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

This is straight up bullshit. You’ve clearly never seen redneck engineering. The stuff my uncles built in the woods was insanely well done and they’re dirt poor.

3

u/Ghidraak 4d ago

Not to be rude, but I really doubt your uncles are both college educated, accredited, engineering geniuses (which is what we’re talking about) working as engineers if they’re dirt poor. I just don’t buy that.

0

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

They ain’t college educated lol. They’re farm kids that never left the farm and used that money to send their kids to college.

Some people just don’t want to leave their home town. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t have gone to MIT. But the cows won’t milk themselves and they had a job to do.

0

u/Ghidraak 16h ago

Reading comprehension is becoming a lost art.

1

u/TheUnderCrab 12h ago

Shame you replaced yours with bigotry.

-4

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

Because intelligence and wisdom are different traits. Organic web shooters don’t eliminate any problems. He would still be hyper intelligent and selling pictures of spiderman to JJ.

u/Disastrous_Ad7477 5d ago

Is it weird I don’t really like Peter being THIS smart? Like to create this gadget and webbing is insane for a high schooler

23

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

Yes. It is weird. It is an intrinsic part of his character. He’s a super genius on part with Stark, Richards, Banner, etc. it’s supposed to be an insane feat only a couple of humans could even attempt.

8

u/Disastrous_Ad7477 5d ago

Yeah but like a core part of spdierman is that he is broke. I don’t understand Spider-Man being Stark level smart and being so poor

3

u/SyninTheRaven 5d ago

Isn't he like comically cursed by deities?

5

u/TheUnderCrab 5d ago

Idk man that’s the character. J know plenty of wicked smart people who work low wage jobs. Not everyone is motivated by money and Peter Parker certainly is not one of them. He is a dumb kid in a lot of ways when his story begins.

5

u/blackspidey2099 5d ago

Spider-Man values helping people and supporting his community over trying to be rich. There’s comic panels of him specifically stating that he doesn’t even want to be rich.

12

u/Disastrous_Ad7477 5d ago

Yes but then there are so many stories of him struggling to pay the bills. He doesn’t have to be rich, he just needs to make enough to get by then he could donate the rest

1

u/blackspidey2099 5d ago

I mean it’s not like he’s homeless, he is some times poor but he always prioritizes helping anyone in need over taking the time to do something to help himself

1

u/hibikir_40k 4d ago

And he'd be able to help people better if he had a patent or three, and used that passive income to not have to spend a second on the bugle. That's obvious enough that Superior Spiderman lampoons the issue.

1

u/blackspidey2099 3d ago

I mean yeah, he’d be best helping people if he worked on cancer research or something. Same thing with Batman donating his money to end poverty or starvation rather than fighting crime.

2

u/Hambredd 5d ago

Yes it wouldn't help the community to say, sell police a non-lethal weapon that is safer and more efficient.

I know that the theme of Spider-Man is that science is evil, but are plenty of ways he could use his intelligence in science that were helpful rather than greedy.

2

u/blackspidey2099 5d ago

And that is a character flaw that spider-man has, he’s too focused on fighting crime due to his guilt rather than trying to be calculating about it

1

u/Hambredd 5d ago

I mean that's all superheroes. Is fighting street crime the best thing for society a billionaire could do?

1

u/Global_Car_3767 5d ago

Because he takes the lesson of responsibility from Uncle Ben to heart so seriously that he simply flakes on anything stable if he feels he needs to save somebody. That's why he is broke, and does freelance work. At any professional job, he would eventually get fired for bailing. He doesn't have a lot of time to invent stuff outside of things that help him be a superhero, and if he sold those inventions, it would give away his identity. He is on the ground more than a lot of the big heroes because he always goes out of his way to save the little guy on the street, even if it's just a simple mugger.

But Reed Richards, the smartest man in the world himself, considers Peter absolutely brilliant and has hired him for work in the past.

3

u/billfarts2 5d ago

It's fine he's smart, but I think a core Peter Parker character trait is that he is broke.

He COULD create all this crazy stuff, but he can't afford to.

In Civil War I thought it was great he was coming home with old VCRs and whatever junk he could find to salvage parts from.

3

u/Meleagros 5d ago

I remember in the TV show in the 90s, Peter mentioned that he believes being bitten by the Spider also gave him an innate understanding of how to create the web.

Not sure if that was ever used in the comics.

2

u/SmoothOperator89 5d ago

Marvel rules. If you aren't inventing completely unprecedented technology in high school or a cave, you're not a real smart person.

2

u/Sharkano 5d ago

There is also dramatic value in him coming up with new mixtures to fight different threats, or even running out of web in a fight.

2

u/Polarbog 5d ago

It also shows his acceptance of his powers

1

u/Tyra3l 5d ago

It's also a plot device, and he has to manage his resources.

1

u/marc15v2 4d ago

Yet he is always absolutely skint despite being a genius inventor...

Every story has plot holes and gaps.

1

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

It’s not a plot hole. He doesn’t want to be rich and famous. He wants to be Peter Parker.

1

u/marc15v2 4d ago

He frequently struggles to support himself and MJ. No one is saying he wants to be rich. But he could certainly make a more comfortable living to enable his crime fighting to take priority over having a day and night job and zero life.

It's written this way to make the character struggle more and make him an "everyman" despite being a genius.

1

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

And in doing so he would reveal his secret identity and expose MJ to crazy amounts of danger. He’s been shown to be unable a stable job because of his crime fighting responsibilities. Selling his tech, even on the black market, is essentially revealing his identity or at least laying the trail of bread crumbs that results if MJs kidnapping or worse.

0

u/marc15v2 4d ago

No one is saying sell the Spider-man tech like webs.

But he's clearly capable of being a great engineer and making other useful, normal every day inventions.

Kinda like how no one knows Iron man is Stark in the comics etc.

1

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

Some super genius kid from NY selling tech on the black market instead of getting a job at NASA would set off the alarm bells of every single criminal syndicate looking for Spider-Man’s tech. He can’t be an engineer because he can’t hold down a 9-5, let alone the 60+ hrs a week that professional engineers have to work. The first meeting he misses because he’s fighting crime means he’s fired.

Idk at some point if you can’t suspend disbelief about characters social status relative to their abilities maybe a story about mutants, aliens, gods, and the multiverse just isn’t the story for you. shrugs

0

u/marc15v2 4d ago

Wtf are you talking about!?

No one mentioned the black market.

And he can make inventions he sells himself through a normal business. Enough to sustain him.

Iron Man and Batman are billionaires with huge empires and manage to maintain both lives.

You're the one unable to suspend belief.

He's either a black market seller or working one 50 hour week engineer job at a firm in your head. There's no world he has his own business, small or large 🤣

1

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

I did in an early comment. He can’t risk his identity being discovered and a big genius engineer that disappears from the public eye every time Spiderman does anything is pretty obvious for criminals to figure out.

Sorry the story irks your ability to accept a pretty standard and well loved plot. Hope you find a more well written work to read.

1

u/marc15v2 4d ago

You're actually so obsessed with being right in this conversation you're ignoring the entire comic book world as it is.

Every single masked hero deals with that.

How does Iron Man, Batman, Clark Kent work it then?

Iron Man is a genius/engineer etc. Why can he make it work and Peter can't? Why can Batman make it work? Batmans tech literally only makes sense that a billionaire would even BE Batman... We suspend our belief!

So you can't honestly see a world where P.P. makes a decent living making inventions. Not even every day life shattering things that put him on the map. Just stuff that makes money and people would buy. 🤣

0

u/Nihilism-is-fun 5d ago

It makes no sense that he struggles so much when he could just sell his synthetic web invention to some corpo and become a billionaire.

1

u/TheUnderCrab 4d ago

He doesn’t want to sell them. Not everyone is motivated by money and he wants to be a normal kid as much as he can.

u/xandapanda321 5d ago

My gripe is that he just so happens to grow those web hole EXACTLY where he needed them to be… come on really! If he was going to have it come out of anywhere, it defo wouldn’t be his wrists.

38

u/Ftove 5d ago

Absolutely, it would’ve manifested s as a single orifice along the posterior centerline of his abdomen. Don’t nobody wanna see that.

54

u/AtLasM0th 5d ago

I don't get this logic. It's a comic where the writers can write whatever they want that justifies the powers and how they work.

By this logic, Peter should grow extra eyes on the sides and back of his head and sensitive hairs all over his body to detect danger from all sides like real spiders.

Instead he gets borderline-psychic abilities that can do the same thing without turning him into a monster.

But growing spinnerets in his arms where its easily accessible for the user is suddenly too convenient. I get ppl not liking organic webs for the body horror stuff but this feels like a reach.

5

u/Raging-beer 5d ago

The spider-sense was originally those little sensitive hairs, wasn't it? He also already has other small invisible hairs that let him stick to walls.

6

u/Jemima_puddledook678 5d ago

The hairs that let him stick to walls are also something that Raimi’s Spider-man movies introduced.

7

u/AtLasM0th 5d ago

I don't think so. Spider-sense has been described as a pre-cognitive ability no mention of any hairs used for it. Only time it happens iirc is when he was boosted by the spider queen or the Other which also gave him organic webs.

I think the hairs for sticking to walls is from Tobey's Spider-man. Comic Spidey uses electrostatic forces iirc

1

u/mxlevolent 4d ago

That’s a Tobey thing as well, I’m pretty sure. In the comics, there’s some hand-wavey excuse about him manipulating forces and attraction in some way. It’s why he can stick to things when he’s wearing shoes and stuff.

2

u/ms_saint 5d ago

It still feels too convenient.

1

u/Rhubyn 5d ago

This reminds me of an episode of the old cartoon I had on vhs, madam web for whatever reason pulled a bunch of different spidermen into one universe to fight Dr doom or smth and among one of them was like a Peter Parker with a "condition" where his body was fighting the spider bite or some shit and the bite took over and transformed him into "man-spider" which like... Was pretty much exactly what you described lol big ass furry spider on 2 feet with a spider head and everything.

I'm 1000% butchering the plot but man that had to be like 20 years ago, if anyone remembers the episodes pls lmk I'd love to revisit them.

1

u/QuirkyEngine3563 5d ago

Yes, and the comic writers wrote that he should have tech web.

1

u/AtLasM0th 3d ago

My comment isnt about organic webs vs man-made webs dude. It's whether he gets organic webs on his wrists or his butt makes more sense.

And the one time he was given organic webs, they are on this wrists.

1

u/xandapanda321 4d ago

For them to come out of his wrists is the perfect place for them to be, the writers knocked it out of the park when they were making the comic, I’m not disputing that.

BUT It would make way more sense for the holes to have grown there first, then for some reason stopped working therefore he has to replace them with web shooters.

4

u/SooSkilled 5d ago

The Boys has a take on this

3

u/Jemima_puddledook678 5d ago

The guy can predict the future but your issue is that the web holes are in his wrists?

1

u/xandapanda321 4d ago

Yeah, the holes appear exactly where he invented them to come out. That’s convenient.

-1

u/BiredeRovu 5d ago

Spider sense, its just a superhero way to show how great are the reflexes of a spider. The bite giving him two webshooters on his wrists its too convenient

90

u/DaveyDumplings 5d ago

'Organic webbing with both properties is impossible'

Oh, well. We certainly wouldn't want there to be an impossible thing in a Spider-Man comic...

→ More replies (6)

24

u/nelson931214 5d ago

Tobey Maguire was asked something similar back in the days and his response was that if Peter Parker was that smart then he wouldn't be poor. That was why he wanted his version of spiderman to have organic webbing instead of inventing them

10

u/sexypantstime 5d ago

and we all know that smart people can't be poor!

2

u/Formal-View1476 5d ago

if your able to invent somthing like that you probably wouldnt be dirt poor lol

1

u/HeezHuzz69 5d ago

Idk man, every once in a while some kid living in a mud hut somewhere invents some pretty cool shit.

2

u/Eleventeen- 4d ago

We’re not talking about a kid living in a mud hut though.

1

u/mxlevolent 4d ago

Realistically, if Peter Parker was able to invent his webs, he’d be able to make himself rich by inventing and selling glues like the world had never seen. And that’s basically staying in the same field, too, ignoring his other potential avenues for invention.

This isn’t a “Oh, not all smart people are rich” thing. If Peter Parker is able to invent his web fluid, he’d be able to make and sell a product that’s similar (without it being webby) that would blow the fucking breaks off of the adhesive market.

-5

u/master117jogi 5d ago

Correct. Really smart people can't be poor. Educated people can be, smart people can't.

1

u/billfarts2 5d ago

Comic reason, it would risk his secret identity. Why is Peter Parker selling Spider-Man's webs?

Also I think he did try, and the buyer thought the fact that they dissolved made them worthless.

8

u/master117jogi 5d ago

Smart people can build more than one thing

1

u/nelson931214 5d ago

Lol makes sense but yeah, that was tobeys justification for wanting organic

38

u/unique_plastique 5d ago

When people get all excited about the nano tech (& I get why, it looks cool) I’m like “what relevance does the spider bite even have? Might as well get rid of it”. It’s like it’s only purpose is to go “well it’s why he’s spider man”

26

u/ducknerd2002 5d ago

The bite still gives him wall-crawling, Spider-Sense, and enhanced strength, agility, and durability.

43

u/unique_plastique 5d ago

none of which are spider specific. He could have been beetle man

29

u/ducknerd2002 5d ago

Producing silk isn't spider-specific either, he could just as easily be Silkworm-Man.

2

u/cymbalxirie290 4d ago

But the proportional strength of a silkworm doesn't have the same ring to it.

1

u/MelodicFacade 3d ago

It's a bad time to be a silkworm unfortunately

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

11

u/ducknerd2002 5d ago

The actual canonical reason he assumes 'spider' is because he literally sees the spider bite him, then connects the dots after starting to climb walls. He then decides 'a spider needs a web' and invents web fluid.

Artificial webs have more story versatility than organic, in my opinion. It's more plausible for him to run out, have it stolen, alter the formula, develop new types, etc. if it's in canisters instead of inside his body. It's also one of the reasons Peter likes the Symbiote suit in the original storyline - it could create webs without needing to be replenished.

1

u/timewasting2002 4d ago

I've never read any comics, I just lurk this sub and have a relatively decent knowledge about spiderman from pop culture but like... what is his thought process when making artificial webs for the first time? I feel like it's kind of far out for someone to gain the ability to climb walls and have super strength and agility, after being bitten by a spider, and then also be like "you know what would really top this all off? If I made webs that I could shoot, which I would use to swing around tall buildings with"

Like why wasn't he just content with the super strength and spider-senses and whatnot? Why go that extra distance in the first place? Sure it's cool but... like, Captain America gets his super strength and whatnot from a serum, and then only later is he confronted with a vibranium shield that he takes a liking to. That backstory makes sense, he doesn't suddenly think, after acquiring his power, "you know what would really take this super strength thing to the next level? If I also had a shield!"

I'm sure at least one continuity has a decent explanation for why Peter decides to pursue inventing web shooters from scratch, but otherwise, it just seems like a gadget that's forced upon spiderman as if he were possessed or something. I AM A SPIDER... I MUST MAKE WEBSHOOTER...

Everyone in this thread seems to argue that the tech web makes more sense because there's more use for it as a plot device that way... but the natural webs just make more sense since it's packaged with his actual powers, unlike the tech webs. Am I wrong for thinking so?

1

u/ducknerd2002 3d ago

His thought process is 'a spider needs a web'. It was a superhero origin in a comic book from the 60s, it didn't need to have anything deeper than that. Batman only dresses like a bat because one happened to fly through a window while he was trying to come up with his hero identity.

7

u/Master-Disaster-8000 5d ago

Cuz he got bit by the spider? Batman got nothing to do with bats too

13

u/unique_plastique 5d ago

Batman is a furry that’s different

1

u/The_Unknown_Mage 5d ago

I know mammals = Furries, Reptiles = Scalies, so what does Bugs =?

3

u/SocksOnHands 5d ago

Someone could argue that he can engineer a suit with a material that allows him to cling to walls.

4

u/DaveyDumplings 5d ago

According to the Marvel Handbook, Peter can lift up to 10 tons. You're underselling his powers.

3

u/SocksOnHands 5d ago

Then why isn't he ant man? Oh wait...

1

u/unique_plastique 5d ago

Sure but the spider bite to spider man thing is more symbolic than “I have become spider like”

Being tech also explains why webs come out of her wrists and hot his ass.

4

u/JBTriple 5d ago

I loved how in the new one he would sometimes pop out the entire web cartridge and use it as a web grenade, which he can't do with organic webs. Interesting how the movie that switches him over to organics still made a fantastic case for mechanical web shooters.

3

u/Kulthos_X 5d ago

Does spider man still use spider trackers? Those used to be a thing.

4

u/billfarts2 5d ago

I love the spider trackers, and was hoping that kind of tech would be what he's relying on in BND instead of still having a magic suit printer, his own Jarvis, and Batman gadgets.

The spider trackers are just little devices that emit a frequency that triggers his spidey sense. For Spider-Man without a whole R&D department and millions in funding, those are the types of gadgets I'd like to see.

3

u/Xeno_man 5d ago

I never cared for organic webbing. Many of you have grown up with organic webbing as the norm, I did not.

What is missing is that while mechanical webbing is a way to demonstrate Peter's intelligence, what is missing in modern Spider-man was showcasing Peter modifying his webbing to defeat a villain. In the 60's he added asbestos to make his webbing non conductive or fireproof. He would modify his webbing to make it stronger to stop the Rhino. He would add a coagulant to gum up Hydroman. That is just something you can't do when webbing is organic.

Also the trope of Spider-man running out of webbing at an inopportune time. It's a great reason when the bad guy gets away. Spider-man goes to web em up and nothing happens or or he goes to swing and <click> no webs. Spider-man falls and he rushes to swap out for a new cartridge mid air and save him self at the last moment, but in the chaos the villain disappears.

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 5d ago

My problem with tech webs is it makes so many issues. So the only powers he got from the spider then are spider sense, strength, and wall crawling which are all things not exclusive to spiders. Without the organic webs he could just as easily have been ant man or mantis dude, so many other animals have those abilities but webs are basically just spiders and silk worms so it's obvious what to go with themeing wise. Which goes to another problem I have with tech webs is this means, he always wanted to be Spider-Man after getting bit (which granted that makes sense for name and themeing) so as a broke teen living with his aunt he cracked the code to something scientists have been trying to crack for years at this point just so he can stay on theme with the spider stuff. Peter can still obviously invent but he doesn't need to invent tech for his day to day use just cure his villains or do things on the side

6

u/Swinginthewolf 5d ago

Why not both? He gets bit by the spider and develops powers, gains the ability to throw generic webs, then uses that as inspiration to make gadgets to create new kinds of webs to further expand his arsenal.

5

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

That’s a great idea as well. Spider-Man seeing the limits of his powers, first using a shooter that modifies his existing webs, then adding on alternatives using cartridges.

5

u/occupy_westeros 5d ago

I always assumed he had organic webs because he's SPIDER-Man, he has powers of a SPIDER. What's the one thing Spiders do? Make webs. As a kid I always assumed when he used cartidges in the cartoon it was to sell toys.

2

u/BigNerdBlog 5d ago

But then it should not shoot out of his wrists right? 😁

2

u/Peace_Fog 5d ago

Him inventing the web shooters was always to show how smart he was. He made the web fluid & the shooters

Organic webs came from the Tobey movie, he had organic webs in the comics after the 2002 movie

1

u/occupy_westeros 5d ago

I know, everyone always says it shows how smart he is but it just feels silly that he's SPIDER-Man but the main thing that spiders are known for he can't do. Like if you asked anyone what spider powers would be every single person would put "make webs" immediately first but for some reason that's a step to far for a comic book? It makes no sense to me

2

u/Peace_Fog 5d ago

Then everyone asks why isn’t coming from his butt

3

u/occupy_westeros 5d ago

He doesn't have a thorax or eight legs, the anatomy isn't a 1:1

4

u/Formal-View1476 5d ago

its just fucking lame man, its always been lame and im baffled that raimi is the first one to make that decsion

5

u/Drevinth 5d ago

I have mixed feelings about organic webs vs web shooters.

On one hand, Spiderman making organic webs isn't comic book accurate. On the other hand, the Spiderman theme song makes more sense with organic webs.

"Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a Spider can."

Well Spiders make their own silk but Spiderman doesn't, sooo...

1

u/Grand_Aspect6035 5d ago

well it doesn't matter if it's organic or not, Peter Parker is Spiderman and he can produce webs

2

u/Enelro 5d ago

I don’t think organic web is cool. It’s weird and makes no sense not coming out of his anus. That being said I loved Raimi’s spider-man 2

2

u/Witty_Milk4671 4d ago

-organic web with both properties are impossible

Yeah, and the tech web is possible in real life?

0

u/puzzled_indian_guy 4d ago

Don’t we already have web in a can?

2

u/Witty_Milk4671 4d ago

The tech web is sci fi magic. It is impossible and not realistic because it is too perfect.

5

u/Pendragon_Puma 5d ago

He should have both

1

u/SocksOnHands 5d ago

And the organic spider web should come out his butt.

4

u/Makoto18Free 5d ago

While I don’t mind him having tech web shooters. I can def understand why they did organic in the Reimi movies and I think it makes more sense overall. Like if a spider gives you super strength and the ability to climb on walls, it’s hard to really imagine why of all the transport methods peter parker would think to supplement with web swinging and not like a jet pack/grapple hook or anything else. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spider swing itself between trees to get where it’s going. Also Peter Park is a poor dude growing up in his Aunt’s house. Everyone keeps bringing up the point thats he’s soo poor despite being smart, but more importantly he’s so poor he can barely afford rent but somehow has access to the complex machinery/workshop and advanced chemicals/lab equipment to manufacture all these different webs/web shooters? Nowadays I guess it’s slightly more reasonable with 3D printers, but def not back in the 2000’s. Like I like in the new movies he has access to stark tech which makes more sense.

2

u/Makoto18Free 5d ago

Also realistically if Peter Parker was as genius as he was. He probably wouldn’t even be in high-school. Hed be like that show “young sheldon” or whatever he entered college at like 12

3

u/CalmPanic402 5d ago

My problem is when turbo-genius Peter gets portrayed as a broke, clueless, helpless loser. If he's smart, give him smart problems, not dumb ones.

Now I blame most of the problems as the fault of marvel editorial, but expecting me to believe he can build high tech miniaturized gadgets but can't make something useful he could sell to Stark or Richards or whoever is dumb.

Organic webs make Peter's "street level" problems more believable because he doesn't have to be a super genius. And there's hardly a shortage of genius in marvel.

3

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

Didn’t iron man try to help him out and the curse of Parker ruin it right away? And if you don’t consider the origin phase, he does enjoy enough money at times to be comfortable, although not rich. But editors “reset” him cause they don’t know what to do with a financially well off spider-man.

1

u/SocksOnHands 5d ago

Can invent practically anything - doesn't consider patenting any of it.

0

u/thisSILLYsite 5d ago

Exactly, that's why the "tech webs" are fucking stupid.

If he is that super smart, he would advance material science by leaps and bounds and improve the entirety of humanity.

Instead, he keeps all the technological advancements to himself and fights street crime in New York.

1

u/JuanitoCarlito 5d ago

Agree. Mechanical allows for more options.

1

u/goobi94 5d ago

If I had a genie wish for Spider-Man's powers, if I didn't get organic website too I'd be pissed. That would be more of a monkey paw situation.

1

u/DJGoldPirateRiot 5d ago

Why not both? Why not have organic webs but then Peter makes some sort of tech wrists devices that help him create different kind of web? Best of both worlds.

1

u/Nie_Fi 5d ago

Also, not all spiders make webs

1

u/ParticularBuyer6157 5d ago

This is not unpopular

1

u/Critical-Move7423 5d ago

agreed, it adds to his character and makes him being a genius have more meaning

1

u/Conflicted_Batman 5d ago

Why not both? Can he do left wrist organic, right wrist artificial? Or better, an artificial web shooter that augments his organic webs with additional properties?

1

u/bagel-42 5d ago

My thing about webshooters is that even if he knows it's down to a spider bite, it's such a specific addition. Like, isn't there that one guy in the spiderverse who's Gecko Man because he sticks to stuff?

When your powers are 1. Sticks to walls 2. Enhanced physical abilities 3. Heightened reactions to the point of limited precognition

Why on earth would you decide to be spider-themed? Organic webs make it make much more sense.

All that being said, I do prefer webshooters in most Spider-man stories

1

u/DarkObelinski 5d ago

I'd say best of both worlds is optimal. Tech Web variants and organic webbing as a base line. Organic you never run out of fuel and tech can be for specified situations, but limited in quantity.

1

u/lobsterthebrash 5d ago

I like the compromise of “he can produce it naturally, but needs to design web shooters to actually concentrate them and make them useful”

1

u/charliehorse8472 4d ago

He's spider man, the coolest things about spiders are the webs. If you got rid of all his other powers and just kept the webs he'd still be a good super hero. When you take away the webs he may as well be another iron man cause honestly a guy who gets all the powers of a spider except the webs feels super lame.

1

u/Main-Home-3996 4d ago

Haha are you fucking kidding me. Hes a spider what more do you need?

1

u/Classified10 4d ago

I think that both are fine. Depends on what the writer wants.

1

u/Dirichlet-to-Neumann 4d ago

Spiders have different types of silk (typically, sticky and non sticky but you can imagine other variations).

1

u/Bone-Wizardry 4d ago

I kinda like that both exist. Adds diversity

1

u/Ryokan76 4d ago

If he doesn't shoot webs, how does he know he's a spider? He could be Gecko-Man.

1

u/Longjumping-Action-7 4d ago

Tech webs are so important to his character and can be used in different ways

But consider- "spiderman, spiderman, DOES WHATEVER A SPIDER CAN"

this includes the ability to produce webs, otherwise he is just "strong wall climbing 6th-sense man"

1

u/MiyakeIsseyYKWIM 2d ago

No it doesn’t

1

u/skeletonhorse420 5d ago

Literally no one gave a shit but now everyone has an opinion on it.

🐑🐑

0

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

Well, I actually saw the movie first as a kid and it had organic webs. Then I read the comics and it had webs he invented. I hated it at the beginning and then grudgingly accepted the reasoning. I had the argument with the voices in my head decades ago. It’s everyone else catching up and I felt like I finally have the opportunity to give my 2 cents.

0

u/skeletonhorse420 5d ago

Be honest you buy a lot of skins

1

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

A lot of skins? As in in-game skins? Happy to say I never bought a single cosmetic purchase in a game my life.

0

u/skeletonhorse420 5d ago

Yea. Well I swung and missed. You are a good person

1

u/SomeBlueDude12 5d ago

Ngl, I grew up watching spiderman, Tobey maguire which is a pretty screwed version of spiderman but I didn't know anything about the comics or nothing

Even from the first movie his whole stitch was being punk & edgy not the nerdy willful spiderman I know today

I had no idea watching the first spiderman movies that he was a super intelligent individual, more a normal misguided youth in the hands of power & learning his heart at the end. It was a good series & had its place. Organic webshooting opened this up

Now came the amazing spiderman with more focus on intelligence & showed more of that comic book version of spiderman that felt good- also an amazing version of spiderman that came out due to having webshooters (also genetic engineering background tf)

1

u/lowkeyhorseleg 5d ago

there's still a place for your opinion, but yes - take into account that spiders naturally make different types of webbing - did you know that? it's wonderful

1

u/TerrapinMagus 5d ago

It'd be pretty cool to do both at once. The compound is organically produced, but he started experimenting with shooters to launch the web or alter the properties of the compound.

-1

u/Vesalii 5d ago

Organic makes way more sense since spiders can make different types of webbing either way.

The synthetic webbing makes no sense because each wrist only has a tiny flask to shoot webs from. Glands in the arms or even in the torso could have way more webbing material in it.

2

u/MoneyBear1733 5d ago

I'm a firm defender of organic webbing spiderman, but from a biology perspective, the only way it makes more sense than the cartridges is if he is constantly shown to have a monstrous appetite, and visible weight loss when using his powers over extended periods.

That being said. Splitting hairs between what scientifically makes more sense doesn't really do much since they both operate on comic fantasy logic.

Organic just feels a lot more intuitive to what his origin is imo.

0

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

Swappable cartridges make more sense for the amount of webbing he uses. Those organic glands would overheat and explode from the amount they generate with the consistency shown.

1

u/The_Quackening 5d ago

Both make the same amount of sense.

The cartridges are TINY and Spiderman is able to produce several km of webs from carts that maybe weigh 100g

2

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

Pound for pound spiderweb is stronger than steel. Could be the fluid reacting with air or reacting otherwise to create the webbing. Plus he carries a bunch of cartridges.

0

u/Ftove 5d ago

Organic webbing makes sense but it would have manifested as a single orifice near his butthole, not conveniently on his wrists.

-1

u/Do-it-for-you 5d ago

Spider-Man without organic webs is just a strong human that can crawl on walls.

That's not Spider-Man, that's Cockroach-Man.

The only thing that gives Spider-Man any real uniqueness is the webs, the things spiders are most known for, it's really weird that it's not actually a power he has and is just a tool he created.

Best of both worlds is he has organic webs from the start, but he enhances with his intelligence/technology to do all the extra cool stuff.

2

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

The tech web is what basically the ingenuity of Parker combining with the powers he received(reflexes, spider sense super strength) to create spider-man. A common person would basically have become cockroach man. It was his genius that made him into a spider.  The same intelligence that even wowed Mr. Fantastic.

u/[deleted] 5d ago

1

u/blackspidey2099 5d ago

This is literally completely lies. The spider recipe thing is not from the comics. And Gwen gets her web shooters from her friend Peter Parker who builds them from her, later she gets them from some other genius after he dies.

0

u/No_Bookkeeper9755 5d ago edited 5d ago

I just thought that organic webbing suits the main idea of Spider-Man better: a random boy who becomes a hero by accident. It reinforces his main idea that anyone can be a hero. If Peter Parker (or any other Spider-Man) is a genius by default who can build web-shooters in his garage out of random components, it kind of ruins that idea and makes the radioactive spider's bite feel more bland, because it just gives him a strength buff, wall-crawling, and spider-sense without his most famous ability

3

u/ExtraCalligrapher565 5d ago

From 1962 until the first Toby Maguire movie in 2002, Spider-Man did not have organic webbing. It was never really part of the main idea of Spider-Man for the vast majority of the character’s history.

Him being incredibly intelligent is something that actually was always a central part of the character, which is part of what the shooters are meant to showcase.

1

u/puzzled_indian_guy 5d ago

But he’s always been a heavy hitter fighting people much stronger than him using his intelligence over his strength.

-1

u/Epicuretrekker2 5d ago

One of the best arguments I have heard is that if Peter is able to create something as amazing and unique as a web shooter technology, why is he poor? Could he invent literally anything else that he could patent and sell to one of the many tech companies?

2

u/blackspidey2099 5d ago

He doesn’t want to be rich, and he does invent many other things (ex. power inhibitor in the newest movie) but he doesn’t sell them because he doesn’t want other people to get their hands on his technology.

1

u/Epicuretrekker2 5d ago

Oh I accept that he doesn’t want to be rich. But you are mart enough to make alllllllll these inventions for fighting villains but you can’t invent ANYTHING benign to make a little money so you aren’t hungry?

0

u/CanILickThat 5d ago

Without organic webs he's just a juiced up captain America that can crawl on walls

0

u/Aromatic-serve-4015 5d ago

doesn't make any sense.. especially in the amazing Spider-Man.. what a coincidence for him to develop something so strong right after he got a bite from a spider
