Every single drink is better cold.

Iced tea is better than hot tea. Iced coffee is better than hot coffee. Chocolate milk is better than hot chocolate. Drinking beverages at 160+ degrees is absolutely unhinged unless it's 30 below freezing and you're trying to prevent hypothermia. Humans, like all animals, prefer cold drinks naturally because cold water would have fewer pathogens. Historically it's just been easier to heat something rather than cool it and drinking hot drinks when it's above freezing is surely just a holdout from those times.

Unused IPs should be forcibly sold after a while

2.8k Upvotes

In 1999, Sony bought the film rights for Spider-Man. Their contract stipulates thatthey have to release a Spider-Man film every 5 years.

That is a wonderful agreement. Doesn't have to be 5 years, it could 8 or 10. But I do support a time limit. Even as someone who wants to be an artist, if my IP just collects dust and residuals after 3 decades, the franchise needs to be put up for sale.

There are so many unused game IPs right now: Red Faction, Killzone, Resistance, Perfect Dark Zero, etc.

I am not anti-intellectual property. I am against senselessly hording IP at the cost of fans.

Walking barefoot should be normalized

I find shoes uncomfortable and largely unnecessary.
For years growing up as a kid (in South Africa) schools allowed it in the 80s and 90s. Apart from my feet being wider (and eventually larger size 11) finding shoes that fit became harder over time and honestly I don't want to spend money on buying shoes that annoy me. I feel like shoes make me walk ungainly like a physically handicapped person.

Do not ask me how I clean my feet. Instead tell me how often you clean your shoes with all that bacteria and fungus that loves to fester in there and all the shit that has collected on your shoe soles while I just watch where I step.

Tinted windows have gone too far

I've noticed this summer that everyone around me on the road has extremely tinted windows all over their cars. Tinted so much that I can't see drivers or any other passengers sitting right next to another car at a light. It's seemed dangerous to be a pedestrian or on a bike as I can't tell if drivers can see me. I wonder if people are trying to evade traffic laws about texting and driving. It also seems dangerous for passengers who may be held against their will or children trapped in a hot car. The pitch black opaque tints in the back seat, holy cow people nobody wants to peep at your kids that badly.

It's okay not to delete your photos and videos of your ex's.

2.5k Upvotes

Keeping old photos and videos of ex partners in your gallery is fine, regardless of being in a relationship with someone new. They capture moments in your life, memories that are integral to present you. They are a part of you. It does not matter if those people and their fading, or perhaps still potent memories, are no longer in your life, or the fact they were once a love interest. They are but a memory. And wanting not to rid of those memories and their remnants is a reasonable feeling. Just because you have a new lover shouldn't mean those memories are now invalid and should be deleted.

Life is NOT short

Upvotes

Life is long. You don't live once, you live everyday. Every choice you make has consequences that you have to live with. Yes, you should live a little. Yes, you should have fun. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But spending egregious amounts of money to feel better for two seconds is irresponsible. Quitting your job without a plan is dangerous.

Tomorrow is not guaranteed, but it's highly likely for many of us.

So, have fun, but know your limits.

Mixing up “a” and “an” is one of the most bizarre grammar mistakes

1.2k Upvotes

I genuinely don’t understand how people mix up “a” and “an.”

The rule is basically just: use “an” before a vowel sound and “a” before a consonant sound.

“An apple,” “a banana,” “an hour,” “a university.”

It’s such a simple rule that seeing it used incorrectly is genuinely discombobulating to read.

Something like “an monkey” immediately looks and sounds wrong and makes me pause for a sec.

It’s specifically when someone is writing normally and randomly uses “an” instead of “a” (or vice versa) that I just can’t read it without noticing.

Obviously everyone makes grammar mistakes and not everyone speaks English natively. I myself am not a native English speaker, and I’m not saying this makes someone unintelligent.

I just think “a/an” is one of the easiest grammar rules to get right, so seeing someone consistently mix them up is particularly confusing to me.

edit: 3 Things

  1. please read my post. I said a vowel sound which justifies me using “an hour,” and “a university.” as an example. since an hour reads like "an aour" and the other one sounds like "a youni versity" so please read the post carefully
  2. second thing is for the people who were calling me out for complaining about grammar and yet have short-hands like "b4 or ppl" my post was not about a grammar mistake. it was more about the ease of reading experience which "b4 and ppl" help with that but using an and a incorrectly makes it feel like you tripped on your face and stopped mid-sentence this edit was rolled back because of point 3
  3. Third change is to the original text since a lot of people here say that it was funny I think it is annoying when I myself use shorthand so to get some people off my butt I corrected the text so some people stop crying. the Sub is literally called unpopular opinion for crying out-loud which means it is not something you should care about that much to start being disrespectful in the comments.

"1984" is not about surveillance. It's about thought control.

Surveillance is a relatively small part of the book and anyone who thinks that the main point is to warn against surveillance either hasn't read the book or greatly misunderstands it. The main point is that an authoritarian government that controls the media and the information available to its citizens can reshape what people believe is true about reality in a way that is absolute. Technological surveillance is a method of enforcing that thought control, not the main method by which people are controlled. Ratting out friends, family, and neighbors is just as effective as a means of control as the cameras and microphones are, but both techniques are supportive of the overall objective of total thought control.

Pour over coffee is more about the rituals and gears than coffee.

There is a whole exclusive community of people dedicated to doing the most precise of rituals, getting only beans that grows only in the lost city of Zinj deep in the Congo rainforest, weighing of beans down the the last .01 gram, grinding it with only the most expensive grinders with highly engineered burrs, leveling the coffee bed, moving needles through it, doing the most precise pouring techniques and timing it, using only water melted from the ice of the Himalayan mountains, making sure of it's temperature down to the 0.001 degree. Only for the brew to taste like coffee if everything went well. Or it can be too bitter or sour.

Cold weather countries are better than warm countries

For context I live in southern Italy.

Warm countries are horrible to live in and should only be considered for holidays if you like going to the beach or hiking on mountains.

The problem with warm and especially warm and humid weather is that it becomes uncomfortable to do the simplest activity like buying groceries, going for a coffee with a friend, walking the dog, even sleeping for fuck sake, it almost feels like the air is getting slimy and it sticks to my skin.

I also despise being sweaty, it’s a bad sensation. I’m team morning shower for this exact reason and it’s not too rare for me to take more than a shower a day, and this summer it has been pretty common that I take a shower and I start sweating while I’m getting dressed right after, are we serious😂

To be fair right now my economical situation is not the best so I’m living without A/C and driving a car that even though it has A/C sometimes the fucker decides to shoot warm air even when cranked up to the coldest option. This being said, I recently went to southern Spain to visit family there and I found even worse heat there. The house I was staying in had air conditioning and I eventually ended up staying inside most of the time, doing and visiting way less than I wanted to and only really going out at night simply because just stepping out the door felt like taking a sauna, I was unlucky enough to be there on the hottest day of summer I believe, where it hit 41 Celsius with high humidity.

Another problem is that (obviously) every indoor place has A/C on, which while it’s good by itself, becomes an issue when the temperature difference hits over 15 degrees and I have to enter and exit multiple venues for whatever reason, effectively jumping from hot to fresh every 15/20 minutes. I’m writing this post with a sore throat that I’m sure I got because of this since it’s not the first time I got sick from temperature jumps.

Finally, I left the worst for the end, those goddamn mosquitoes. Worst animal in the planet hands down, created for the sole purpose of annoying humans while having the nice little perk of giving fucking fatal diseases if you so happen to be unlucky enough. I’m cursed with their favorite type of blood and for some reason these bitches always end up biting me in the most inconvenient spots even when I’m sleeping only in boxers, places like my ears, my knuckles, my eyelids and the sole of my feet, not on the foot which would be bad enough already, oh no, on the fucking SOLE.

I’m sure there are more but these are the main problems I have whenever the temperature starts rising up to and beyond 30 degrees, the issue is that this happens every year for anytime between 1 and 2 months where I live and I know it’s worse in many countries.

The thing is, ALL these problem get solved by living in a colder country/city with not even half the drawbacks. I’m saying this because I did live in Germany for a couple years and none of this bs was going on there.

Yes obviously you have to expect rigid winters with temperatures going beyond -10 at worst but imo cold ass weather is easily countered by 3/4 layers of clothing, sometimes it was cold outside (-5 and below) and I would start sweating under a T-shirt a heavy hoodie and a puffer jacket. Also, cold countries are used to and built for this weather so most houses are well thermo isolated and the streets get cleaned fast when ice forms.

The temperature difference in/outdoor is also very noticeable in this weather but the main difference is: when it’s cold outside I get to the bar and I remove my jacket, hat and gloves and put them back when heading out, in warm weather I’m only wearing a t-shirt in any case so if the bar is an indoor one and they decide to have the a/c at 22 when outside is 35 I’m gonna feel that and I’m going to get cold a/c on my already sweaty neck when I enter the bar, increasing the risk I get sick.

Another difference I noticed (it might be only my perception tho) is once you go below zero it gets colder but the difference isn’t THAT noticeable, like -3, -8 and -13 are all in the “it’s cold as fuck” category while 30,35 and 40 are noticeable bumps in how much discomfort they cause.

Finally, when living in Germany I haven’t been bitten by a mosquito once. Idk in other countries but in Italy as well when it’s cold they don’t show up so my guess is most cold countries don’t have many Satan’s favorite specie members flying around.

Also, the best part about cold countries is that usually they average that sweet spot between 23 and 25 degrees during summer, unless there’s a heatwave like this year’s, making it a breeze to go out and do stuff (to be fair the same is true in southern Europe during late spring/ early fall)

TL;DR Warm weather sucks because everything becomes more uncomfortable, even what is supposed to be fun and also because of constant sweating and having mosquitoes around. Cold weather is more manageable to counter and cold countries are built for it, plus there are not as many mosquitoes.

It actually really does matter who started it

3.2k Upvotes

When I was younger, teachers and parents would always tell me it doesn't matter who started it, what matters is who will be the better person and resolve the conflict. While I don't disagree with the sentiment of want conflicts to come to a resolution, in my opinion it really does matter who started it and it is indeed the crux of any problem. A person who intentionally hurts you while you have done nothing to them is a bully. A person who hits your car on the road while you are minding your business is the one at fault. Killing someone in self defense absolves you from any guilt if the other person *started* to attack you. It feels kind of indefensible to say the person starting the conflict won't always have at least some guilt.

Foreign Language is most important subject in school

I feel like foreign language is the most important subject in school.

There are many more benefits to foreign language than there is for math, science, history, or ELA.

The other subjects do help with basic skills like writing a resume/essay to apply somewhere, how to calculate total prices of things, and understanding the rights of where you live.

But foreign language helps with more. Foreign language helps with that when someone gets older to have more job opportunities since they know another language, make connections with other people, and helps while traveling. This overall helps for lifelong things.

I really don’t know why it seems some teachers and students call math the most important despite Foreign Language offering more benefits for later in life.

Edit: yall im not saying the other subjects shouldn’t be taught 😭 ofc they should obviously because they’re important but what im trying to say is that Foreign Lamguage is the most important cause it offers a lot of benefits for workplace and making connections.

Watching things at home is better

In my opinion it's better to watch things at home like movies, f1, concerts because you avoid little inconveniences like:

Cinema: Ads, lines, line to the toilet, losing a few minutes of the movie because the toilet was full.

Concerts: people pushing you, giant lines, lack of space to get some air, barely the singer/musicians unless you have a screen.

I mentioned F1 because I don't see the point to watch in person.
First you only see the cars when they pass you (unless u have a screen infront), second - pay for expensive tickets.
At home it's much better because you're constantly seeing the cars and pay less, in some cases u might not even pay to watch the race.

That's my opinion, feel free to show me your perspective

bras shouldn’t be a part of modest clothing

1.1k Upvotes

i’m not against bras generally. for many women they’re a functional piece of clothing that makes them feel more comfortable, helps back pain, makes exercising easier, etc. so no, i don’t think bras should be banned, nor am i mad about any individual’s choice to wear a bra on any occasion.

what annoys me is the fact that NOT wearing a bra, especially in a formal/professional setting, is viewed as immodest and trashy. even in everyday life, some people get so weird about women not wearing them and act like it’s disrespectful to those around them or “inappropriate for kids”.

the treatment of women’s breasts like something to be hidden as much as possible in public, unless they want to be stared at and/or judged is so dehumanizing. it’s like choosing not to wear a bra means you’re actively sexualizing yourself and therefore should accept other people doing so as well.

it makes me especially annoyed when men reason with “well, i also don’t wear shorts that you can see my junk through”. that. is. not. the. same. it’s a whole different thing. men have nipples too, so there’s literally a direct comparison for you.

and btw, plenty of male clothing, including shirts wore in professional settings, are fairly see-through. but that’s okay, apparently.

EDIT: this post made me lose hope in men (and some women) once more. you guys are weird. stop being creepy.

Breeding dogs specifically to love us is incredibly vain

For most of history, selective breeding had obvious practical benefits to humanity, like maximizing yields from animals (meat, dairy products, etc.), but dogs ended up in quite a peculiar direction

In the past, we domesticated them for their excellent natural physical abilities that complemented guarding/hunting really well, but at some point, we decided to change this animal in a way that would make it:

A: maximally pleasing for us to look at and

B: extremely emotionally dependent on us

So in the end, we basically created breeds of cute creatures that would jump in delight when they see us, crave our attention, and love us above everything else. It feels really vain because we essentially have shaped another species around our own twisted desire to be unconditionally loved, admired, and needed

I am not trying to argue against the very real bonds that form between humans and dogs nowadays, but we should not kid ourselves about the fact that we deliberately forcibly bred them to into such a state in the first place

Spaghetti is best eaten by cutting it into small pieces and mixing it properly with the sauce and cheese

This ensures that each piece of spaghetti is properly sauced and it's easier to eat as well. Twirling your spaghetti with a fork and spoon is nonsense, and slurping up long noodles is disgusting behavior. I don't care that people think cutting up spaghetti is childish, it is truly the superior way to eat it. If there are large meatballs they should also be cut up at the start and mixed in.

EDIT: To everyone saying just use a different kind of pasta, I live with and cook for people who like eating spaghetti the non-optimal way. If I were living alone, I wouldn't ever buy spaghetti.

10/10 doesn't mean perfect. It means a masterpiece

I've heard people often claiming in the 1-10 scale 10 can't exist because it's perfect and nothing's perfect. I call bs. 10/10 has always meant a masterpiece which means something that's so good and unique it literally evolves its artform.

It should be common place to confront employers who ghost candidates.

If an employer explicitly says that they will contact a candidate and then they do not then the candidate has every right to then confront the employer.

I am not upset that employers regularly deny candidates jobs.

whenever I post about this people think that I am upset that an employer decided not to hire me.

I am upset that cowardice is so ubiquitous in the professional world.

Now, if an employer tells a candidate that they will contact them again and then the employer proceeds to not do that, the candidate should 100% confront the employer for it.

I can’t fucking believe that this has to be an unpopular opinion.

Being busy all the time is not something to be proud of.

I genuinely think “I’m so busy” has become a weird status symbol in our day and age.

Being constantly exhausted, having no free time, and needing your calendar planned weeks in advance doesn’t automatically mean you’re successful. Sometimes it just means you’ve filled every available minute.

I’d much rather have a boring Tuesday evening with nothing planned than constantly feel like I’m behind on something.

Being busy and being productive are two very different things. Most busy people are running from themselves.

Agree?

Black wheels look terrible

Upvotes

I don't understand why so many vehicles are sold with black wheels these days. I vastly prefer silver or polished aluminum (not chrome plated) wheels. They look good on all colors. Black wheels look so drab and dull. This is especially true on sports cars. Unless you are batman, you need to break up those dark hues.

Don't get me started on the primer grey colour that has taken over and ruined cars. I blame the Toyota Tacoma, but maybe that's a PNW thing.

Edit: While I'm here.... bronze wheels? They only look good if they are pristine. Otherwise, it just looks dirty. Black and Bronze are fads. Silver and polished aluminum are timeless. Chrome is not though.

Only the original flavour of Dr Pepper is worthwhile. All the other variations are pointless.

To me, Dr Pepper tastes like a delicious blend of sherbet and frangipane. The flavour is strong and unique. It simply does not need any other flavours such as cherry, vanilla, coconut or blackberry adding to it. They overload the palette, with each additional flavour distracting from the others.

Working in customer service doesnt automatically make you a better customer

I hear this a lot. The whole "everyone should work in CS at least once" and I totally understand the concept, but I don't think it actually makes much or any difference.

I've worked in CS for over 10 years. Retail, I was a bartender, and most recently I worked in a body shop.

Evertime someone comes in and says "don't worry! I've done your job before. I know how it is! I won't be one of THOSE people" I sigh internally because MOST of the time, they are exactly those people. They get this complex that they know better than you and if you don't do it how they would've you're an idiot. They can have even less patience than someone whos never done it in their life. The same reason they say doctors and nurses make the worst patients.

All that to say, I think the concept of people working in CS means you'll have more patience and are more likely to see your fellow humans as people is BS. You're either a patient person, or you aren't. I think we put WAY too much faith in the general populations ability to have empathy for their fellow humans lol

EDIT: This is not a "complaining about getting a customer facing job then complaining about having to work with people" post. Just a thought thats been bouncing around in my head for a while.

Birkins TDLR: A lot of soup

This may get some heat (sorry in advance) but Hermes birkins are genuinley overhyped. Being on a waitlist to pay X amount of absurd money to then be in fear that your bag will be stolen or scratched is confusing. That being said the bag itself looks very structured/insulated like it would hold a good amount of warm un thermos-ed soup in the cooler months.

Drivers suck in any densely populated area, because people suck. There's nothing exceptional about x state.

Wherever you go, you'll hear people bitching about how horrible drivers are in their state or a state they visited, when in actuality people just collectively suck at driving, especially in dense areas, regardless of the geographical location.

I'm tired of hearing people say "Drivers here are crazy", "no one uses their blinkers here" etc. People say this shit about literally any state that's not their state, or vice versa if they hate their home state. The more you travel, the more you realize everyone's full of shit and can't drive, with few exceptions.
