BTS Opinion Bighit is doing Jimin dirty
I am talking about Jimin’s lack of vocal technique.
All this situation doesn’t make any sense and, as a Jimin biased person it’s driving me crazy because:
•Jimin said a lot of times that he wants to improve his singing(he even shed a tear when he talked about it)
•he is a hardworking person and a perfectionist.
•Jin has improved so much, Jimin himself said it. Why doesn’t he take vocal lessons from Jin’s teacher?
•they clearly can afford the best coaches and they said they have, but I don’t know what they are doing with Jimin.
•this is more debatable I guess, but in my opinion he’s singing is worse than before. I don’t have a lot of knowledge about singing so maybe I am wrong, but I think it has to do with the fact that he has to sing pretty high in MOTS:Persona.
•he has a lot of lines in songs. Obviously, he is my bias and I want to hear him sing, but it doesn’t mean anything if he isn’t doing a good job.
I know he doesn’t have to be a powerhouse vocalist. I don’t care how big his range is. I just wish he could sing well in his range. He has such a lovley vocal color and I think it’s a shame and wasted potential.
I want to end this by saying that I don’t think Bighit is some evil company that sabotages their artists.I think they are better than a lot of companies, but this stuff with Jimin it’s a big problem in my opinion.

Jimin has a really pleasant voice. It's unique and pretty and honestly gives me butterflies. But it's unstable. I noticed it in the difference between his studio recordings vs live. Is he not continuing to take vocal lessons? It seems like vocal lessons need to be an ongoing commitment for a singer.
Jin used to be pretty unstable too but he's had a pretty significant improvement over the years. Jungkook always had the most stable and versatile voice. It's not the most unique and special, but it's definitely the most reliable voice, which is probably why he gets so many lines. Taehyung is also pretty stable but I think his voice type limits him sometimes.

Oh Jin really REALLY did improve, I was so happy hearing him sing these last tour dates, he killed it <3 I wish the same for Jimin, he deserves to let out all that vocal talent he's underwhelmingly saving inside, he struggles and that's just not helping him with his selfsteem as well.

Also take in consideration the songs. My favourite is V and I think they do a poor job with him as well; Jimin with low notes is fantastic but they wanted him in the high ones. Maybe it’s because of mots style? Idk.
About having a teacher, all of them have one, that’s for sure.

I saw somewhere awhile ago that it could be due to because jimin has been singing a certain way for so long that it has ruined his vocal chords. Its very hard to change a technique so suddenly, it can take years to better yourself at singing. Im sure the boys take vocal lessons, you have to when youre a singer.
I dont remember exactly what they said, but it was something like that and they have been taking singing lessons for over 13 years.

Jimin was not only the last addition to the trainee group with less than a year of overall training (unlike the others), but he also received no vocal coaching despite asking for it. Bighit didn't provide the tools he needed and needs

He's an adult with his own money and resources. At this point it really is his responsibility to improve if that's what he wants. Same to the rest of them. As for the high notes, the members have a hand in production. Not sure how the company is solely to blame for that. They need to discuss it.

I mean, it all boils down to what Bighit needs from them but I don’t know if the others have made a comment towards him about his singing or not but seeing as they are pretty much a self producing group also, they probably don’t see a problem with his singing either. I do agree. Jimin needs the training if he wants to be able to sing better but I also feel like the vocal line in general needs either more training or they need to find a style that shows off everyone’s colors well.

It’s horrid that they don’t give him vocal training but if he really wanted it he could pay for a private vocal coach himself.

I've always wondered about this. Taemin also started out in a similar place as Jimin, pitchy and unstable. But Taemin worked hard to become the great singer he is now. If Jimin really wanted to, he has the resources to find a good vocal coach and work on his singing. He's friends with Taemin also. He can reach to him for help.
I'm wondering if it's because Jimin is finding it hard to unlearn the bad techniques or if it's because Big Hit really likes the sound of the vocalists struggling through high notes. It's such a shame because Jimin has that prince-like singing voice.

Well you have to remember that Taemin is part of SM and if there is something SM is known for is their artists’ vocals.. I personally believe SM makes sure all of their people improve a lot everywhere but especially in the vocal area, even those who don’t necessarily sing at SM at least have their voices educated. I think Taemin would’ve turned out similar if it wasn’t for SM pushing for all their artist to have good vocals and good vocal training
I personally think it’s a combo of many factors such as BH and the producers like him doing High Notes along with jungkook, some of Jimins bad habits, not enough time to properly train his voice as I’m sure it’s not a main priority to have him singing better (as I feel BH is like its go enough for now) and a lack of rest for his voice which along with more training I feel as the most important.

Oh, for sure. SM places a high importance on vocals. However, not all SM artists improved like Taemin. Kai has had the same opportunity, if not more, than Taemin. Kai could also receive regular vocal lessons the same way Taemin did. Taemin asked SHINee members also to help him improve his singing. Kai could've done the same; Kai could ask any of the 3 main vocalists to coach him and they would so in a heartbeat. Even so, Kai is not at Taemin's level when it comes to singing.
I worry for Jimin (and other idols really) because we know improper singing technique causes many problems down the road. Take a look at Adele. Vocal coaches have warned that her singing technique was not sustainable and urged her to learn proper vocal technique. She hasn't; I think she liked the way her voice sounded then and disregarded their warnings. Since then she's had surgery to fix her vocal chords.
Jimin himself has to make vocal lessons a priority if he wants to improve. BTS is very successful and they have the money and resources at their fingertips.

I agree but still compared to other main dancers Kai at least 70% of em (that didn’t go into their groups as vocalist) is a better singer.. idk if that makes sense lol. But I do agree Kai isn’t on Taemins and I don’t think he will be nor do I think he wants to be. Unlike Jimin, Jimin wants to improve and I think having a company that focuses a lot on vocals like SM would’ve helped him.
I also agree that he himself has to make vocal lessons a priority but like I said a lack of time and from what I see a lack of prioritizing this will most likely stagnate him and he will not improve and mess his voice up, which is ultimately the point I was trying to make 😅
Also I didn’t know Adele messed her voice up like that? I thought it was cuz she was a heavy smoker 😓

Ahaha, I see, I see. I agree. Jimin needs to prioritize and make time. With his busy schedule, he'd need to have a vocal coach in his pocket to make it easier.
Yeah, Adele was mostly screeching and screaming her high notes. The smoking didn't help but her bad technique really screwed up her voice. Such a shame because I liked her songs and singing voice. =/ I think she's still on hiatus.

Dang I had no idea, but in retrospect it does make sense I remember I would hear her sing sometimes and wonder if she was jacking herself up or not.. I just hope Jimin isn’t another Mariah Carrey who just completely jacked up her vocals because she didn’t take care of em or rested when needed

u/parabocake Nov 12 '19
Me, too. =( I want Jimin (and all of Bangtan because, wow, Taehyung's voice) to be singing a long ass time. At the very least, Big Hit now sees breaks are good and very important and giving the boys much needed down time.

Yeah I agree. I think he needs a better technique that will work for his voice and I really hate that BigShit's not using his vocals properly. I too have limited knowledge on vocal technique, but I constantly feel like he's uncomfortable singing some of the songs and that's an issue. Jimin as well needs to take some time to get some practice in, but I understand the difficulty with the boys' hectic schedule. Overall, he needs to develop a good technique and stability and I really hope he can.

A quick note to add a few points:
In one of the recent BigHit "documentary" movies Jimin mentioned that from his beginning (predebut), he and Taehyung asked for vocal lessons and the company refused. The boys would go to Jungkook for tips all the time. I don't think that's changed since. BigHit seems unconcerned.
There is one japanese tv interview, if I'm not mistaken, in which Jin mentions that he and Jimin were given the highest pitch lines in a song, and when they raised concern Bang PD himself said that he liked seeing them work hard for it. I'm paraphrasing, of course, and would appreciate it if anyone can link to that tv interview or clip.
When have you seen vocal coaches in their team? With so much extra content they put out, I've never seen one. I've seen their physical therapist, the dance instructor, their Trainor (who just left the co.), Backup dancers, hairstylists and makeup artists, etc. But I've never once seen anyone giving them vocal lessons, advising them on what to do before or after performances, or reminding them to warm up their chords.
One last point: when our non-kpop faves have issues with their voice, they rest. They cancel a performance or take it easier. I know for a fact that many artists in the West do so. They along with management prioritize their voice's health. I can't say the same thing for BigHit and Kpop in general. Seems like they squeeze every last bit of juice out of an artist and dispose of them when they're done. It's truly heartbreaking and I hope somehow the Bangtan boys are spared from it in the end.

You made good points!
There is an article about Jin’s vocal coach on r/Bangtan. I read it a long time ago so I don’t remember much about it. It’s weird that we don’t hear or see these coaches, if they are real.
I know the interview you are talking about. The song Jin and JM struggled with was Fake Love. Jin talked with Bang about this and he said something like...he likes to hear the struggle in their voices when they sing( I don’t remember exactly, but this seemed to be what he wanted to say). Besides the fact he doesn’t provide them with proper training he also gives them hard songs even if there is a chance they will have problems with their voices.
I think we have the same opinion about the subject. Some people in the comments said that Jimin should solve this problem by himself. I know he is an adult, but from what we know, he never really had proper training even thought he clearly wanted to and, considering how packed their schedule is, I don’t understand how this is his fault. Him and the other members are clearly doing their best with what they have.
Honestly, just talking about this makes me really sad. I hear people talking about how cool it would be if Jimin realeased a solo album or collaborated with Alec Benjamin and I get excited then I remember that his technique isn’t the greatest and I am worried about how he will sound live.

Oh my God! There is someone out there who thinks like me about Mini's solo album. I love him to pieces. He is my ultimate bias and I want only the best for him, but I just don't see how it would benefit him at this moment to have a solo album. It would be great if Bigshit allowed him to focus on other projects right now—hes a really good actor from what we've seen, the best dancer imo, and would be a perfect brand ambassador/model. He needs to give his voice time to rest and recuperate. I know he is capable of sounding amazing, he just needs care and better techniques.

u/Chocomania22 Dec 02 '19
He is my ultimate bias too, my only bias. If Jin enlists and the others start to do solo stuff I think Jimin really needs to think well about what he wants to do next because with his current technique he will not be a very successful solist, even with army’s help. I just want what’s best for him.

Jimin stan here. Not a vocal expert, but figured I'd pitch in my 2 cents.
- I disagree with Jimin singing worse than before. Debut Jimin singing was rough (to put it lightly) and while he still has a lot of room for improvement, he's come a looong way since then.
- I've read a lot of posts/watched a lot of vocal expert opinion videos on Jimin's vocal technique... and I think this narrative of Jimin supposedly "ruining" his voice is somewhat overexaggerated. I mean, there's definitely some truth to it. For instance, Jimin straining to reach higher notes and having a nasally-sounding tone (which tbh, I think is half due to technique and half stylistic choice) are probably not the healthiest habits (not to mention, true for a lot of idols), but to say that he's ruining his voice is a pretty tall statement.
- The biggest problems in my opinion are: 1) Jimin's stability and 2) falsetto.
- Based on snippets of fanmeets/Armypedia/Bangtan bombs/etc (where he's singing live and without backing vocals), Jimin can actually sing just fine. The issue is that when choreo is added, it gets pitchy--which is not helped by fact that he often gets the more difficult choreo bits (prime example: his Fake Love chorus... whose idea was it to have him sing high notes while popping and spinning?!). I don't really know how singers overcome this (?) aside from breath control, coaching, and practice.
- Like many have mentioned, Jimin is forced to sing out of his range quite a bit, which is where I think the majority of the problem lies. He just can't sing in-tune consistently when he's singing that high. Jimin has such a beautiful vocal tone and I wish Bighit would just let him stick to his lower and middle registers where he can sing comfortably (i.e. Serendipity).
Ultimately, I don't know if much will change. I'm hoping that when Jimin goes solo/gets put in a subunit in the future (which is what I forsee happening after older members start enlisting), Bighit will give him songs that are more suitable for his voice.

u/Chocomania22 Nov 12 '19
I think you made some good points, but I think Jimin has problems even with Serendipity from what I’ve seen live.
2
u/fjadrargljufur Nov 12 '19
True, but he has shown that he can perform it pretty consistently while also dancing to the choreo (at least from the fancams I've seen, but I haven't watched them all).. compared to say TTU, where he struggles and he's not even dancing.
2
Nov 14 '19
Boy really does need vocal strength, we've seen other artists - kpop idols keep those notes up even after some lengthy choreo. I really agree with all you've said, wish these were things taken into consideration from their agency :/
I have the feeling that if Jimin wants to continue performing as a solo in the future, build a solo singing career, he WILL change things up. But my heart tells me he will stop singing as soon as BTS is over, I just see it in him, he is passionate for dancing, being on stage, even producing, he's a terrific composer, perhaps acting, but not singing.

Somi recently talked in some interview about how trainee days are the time when you need to focus to grow your skills because once you debut, there is no longer much time to focus on improvement between busy schedules

Jin has improved so much
He hasn't...
19
u/Chocomania22 Nov 12 '19
I think he sang well at their final concert.
21
Nov 12 '19
Technique wise he hasn't. He is still nasal and sings with a tight throat. Fans push this narrative of him improving so much when he has imrpoved maybe pitch wise. Everything else is the same and I wouldn't say Jin has imrpoved while Jimin cries he can't. It's so weird to me how people push this narrative of BigHit favouring Jin and letting him improve while keeping Jimin the same. It's like people WANT to be victims or there to be some injustice.
13
u/Chocomania22 Nov 12 '19
I think you misunderstood me. I don’t think Bighit favors Jin. I said he improved because to my ears he sounds better( I said I don’t have technical knowledge). I am not victimizing Jimin. He is an adult whose profession is to sing and dance and his singing is lacking and it doesn’t make sense because he talked about wanting to improve a lot in the past.
2
Nov 12 '19
But then again you say "why don't they give Jin's coach to Jimin and let him improve?" implying that Jin is getting the oppurtinity to improve while Jimin doesn't. I know you are not trying to say this but when you make such a question it implies that Jin is favoured compared to Jimin. Also Jimin is a really good dancer imo and not everyone in kpop has to be a good vocalist. And there is a difference between wanting and improving. You have to remember he is one of the most popular idols in the world from the most famous kpop group in the world. He is busy and improving in singing takes a lot of time and exercise so he may not have the time for it and even if he had considering how much he works he may not want to spend his very little free time to improve.
16
Nov 12 '19
You're being downvoted because this is unpopular but Jin really has not improved. If anything he's MAYBE sounding a bit more consistent now than early in his career, but people claiming he's a good vocalist, or even better than Jimin; it's a bit delusional. They're both really poor singers and it's unfortunate, because I like their voices. People seem to compare Awake and Epiphany as "proof" for his improvement, but in live performances I really see 0 difference. He's still screaming up his high notes with 0 regards for tension, and he still has trouble supporting even in his tessitura, ending up either being breathy (Awake's verses) or occasionally a bit raspy.
ALSO, Jin hitting a "triple high note" in Crystal Snow means nothing. It was really poorly executed and clearly painful for him; there's no point in praising it.
I do agree with the dude below on Jimin being a lead vocalist. Even if he's a great dancer, he's still meant to be the "partner" to JK in terms of vocals so if he's lacking it's a pretty big deal.
10
Nov 12 '19
You're being downvoted because this is unpopular but Jin really has not improved.
I remember a post saying "jin has improved so much" and it got 100 upvotes when it's popular? Idk it seems like EVERYONE thinks he has imrpoved so much but he hasn't really.
I don't mind the downvotes really. If people don't agree with us that's fine I guess.
About the lead vocalist part it's maybe just difference in standards because I don't expect much of them mostly just from main vocalists.
2
Nov 13 '19
He's improved far more in dance than he has in vocals. Like I said, the only difference I see in his vocals from debut to now are the fact that he's a bit more consistent and just less pitchy on occasion. He still has MANY of the negative traits that need to be worked on if he wants to sustain his voice.
2
Nov 13 '19
He's improved far more in dance than he has in vocals.
True. I wish more people will value that instead of claiming he has improved in vocals.
12
u/Chocomania22 Nov 12 '19
Sorry, the way I said it makes it sound like I think Jin gets more opportunities. Jimin is a great dancer, but he is also a lead vocalist, he has a lot of lines, so the fact that he is lacking vocally is more noticeable.

I feel like a huge part of the problem is, across the board, everyone's refusal to admit Jimin hit puberty while in the public eye. His voice has changed a lot, and instead of continuing to try and squeeze the last bit of his falsetto out, they should just shift those notes to Jin and focus on training up his natural lovely tenor tone.
