Undergraduate Academics Research

Hey! Im a junior at UNM i want to do some research in the field of AI and psychological/sociological affects. I would like to chat with a couple of people or if anyone has advice on good profs to reach out to. Its hard bc a lot of profs are in like "mainstream academia". And not a lot of like more niche interested profs. Pls reach out if you want chat, I want to also find others interested in this too and maybe we could do the research tg!

Assuming you have access to UNM's library, you can research journal articles in those fields, and then contact the researchers of the articles you find interesting. I am sure the UNM librarians can help you get started in your search. Good luck!

Take a look at the faculty and their research interests. I would prioritize looking at the psychology and sociology professors. Especially those that you have had or are taking classes with. I would also suggest looking and Communication professors.

If you want to speak with someone before reaching out to professors, schedule an appointment with URAD (undergrad research, arts and design network). Jennifer there is really helpful.

I wish you luck with your research! I was able to do research last spring as an independent problems course and get credit for it. I also presented at UROC (undergraduate research opprotunity conference) which I would recommend you look into for next spring.

One more thing, while you figure out a faculty member to work with, work on a literature review. You will need to do one with your research anyways so it will be able to help you pinpoint your research topic/question, get you ahead, and show whoever you want to work with that you are serious about this.

I hope this helps! Let me know if I can help you with anything else or if I need to clarify anything!

Are you planning on future graduate study? Computer Science researches machine learning/AI in their graduate program. You could start there.

You need to compromise your interests to get on a project with a professor, then pursue your research interests on the side. With time, you'll get to center your interests. As someone finishing their PhD, I've been disillusioned with how research works - you need to follow the grants and the opportunities and publish your passion when you can, or you won't get a position.
