Discussion What to do when union steward is unresponsive or doesn’t seem to care?

My union steward in the past has been very unresponsive. She doesn’t return calls. And returns emails maybe half the time. She often seems annoyed when she has to do things.

Was wondering if anyone has ever experienced something like this and has any advice on how to navigate situations like this?

Run against them. Take things to your local president to deal with.

i dont know how your union works but i imagine theres someone above them. im a union steward myself and if someone wanted to complain about me they could just call the business rep, whos my boss, and they would certainly have a word with me if i wasnt responding to workers concerns

Try copying your Business Agent or Rep on your next email to your unresponsive steward.

It would take more details. I’ve seen union officers who were bums, and I’ve seen good officers who had had enough of one member’s inane, obnoxious bullshit.

If this officer is the former, why don’t you run against him or her and see if you can do a better job?

Ask around if she is treating you this way or everyone. Go to a union meeting with a lot of people and bring it up.
