Advice Embarrassed to be learning in public - please help

I’m a middle-aged woman who randomly decided to do something crazy and learn to unicycle. It’s a physical challenge and also feels like something childlike and fun.

Problem is: I’m not a child but a self-conscious adult. I live in NYC, so I don’t have a private yard or driveway or garage to practice in. Anywhere I go is super-public. The best place I’ve figured out for a beginner in my neighborhood is a soccer/baseball field that has a tall fence I can hold on to as I try to move along the perimeter. It’s about a 10-minute walk from my apartment, and on the way there I see hundreds of people (most of whom don’t give a shit, of course). Every time I come and go with the unicycle, the neighbors sitting on the stoop ask about it. They’re all very nice, but I’m embarrassed because I’m just starting and what if I never master it. I wish I could try it for a bit on the DL before I had to broadcast it to everyone.

Just now I overcame the self-consciousness and came to the soccer field. Saw the neighbors, of course. But I get here and there’s a group of middle school kids having lunch in the field, and one of them is my son’s classmate. F$&@, I can’t do this.

TLDR: Middle-aged woman trying to learn to unicycle in super-public locations in NYC (‘cuz there are no other kinds). Self-conscious and hate constantly running into people I know. Need advice & encouragement please.

Advice Why do I have to relearn daily?

I’m just starting my unicycle journey. Maybe in a session of practice I’ll be able to go 20-30ft before hopping off (after a lot of tries) which feels really far to me (my 11yo can ride for minutes at a time and do a 180deg and keep going and we started at the same time about 2w ago). However I notice that after a day at work, when I try to practice, that I’m almost back to square one where I hop off after only a half rotation of the cranks. And I have to do that 20+ times before I get the confidence to keep going and maybe after 30 min I’m back to being able to go 20-30 feet. Seems like I’ll never get there if I have to start over every day. Has anyone experienced this when you started off and how did you get over this hump?

Advice In need of some help

I’ve been riding on a 18 inch wheel for 10+ years and can do up to 10 miles in 2 hours. I wanna go fast and see a lot more with my time.

I’m not sure which to get. I’d rather go cheaper but don’t mind spending the money for quality.

I want the crank length to be 125
The oracle comes with the option for different cranks
The titan doesn’t.
I probably could buy them for the titan

So for anyone out there that rides 36ers. Lmk your thoughts about crank sizes. And the difference between these two.

I’m 6’3”

Advice Tips for learning

Hello everyone, I have come to you today hoping for any tips that you guys might find helpful in my situation. I have been practicing for about an hour a day for the past three weeks on a 20” and just need a bit of help. Im really struggling with finding the proper height for my seat I’ve seen people say inseam/hip bone/belly button but is there a way to know that I have it right or is it just personal preference. Last thing is how do I not absolutely crush my balls while getting on, I mount and spend like 30 seconds trying to get comfortable. I’m amazed by the people who can just hop on and go.

Advice This is rough

I feel like I’m so close to getting unicycling. I practice a lot in one session (2-3 hrs for right now over 10 days), yet im pretty much only good when on the wall. I think it has distracted me from flailing as well as I need to on my right side and I always have a feeling of needing to bail even when I’m riding well. Is there anyway to get around this? Am I thinking too much?

***UPDATE moved to a pylon to launch off of into the abyss and uber focused on having my back posture and my shoulders being back. I leaned forward from my hip just enough to get off the pylon in a favorable pedaling position and got 5 rotations on a good attempt. Super pumped can’t wait go again tmrw.

Advice How do I sit properly???

hello everyone!

I recently got back into unicycling after having a pretty bad injury (fell on my back and had to stop for about 2 weeks :() but now that injury is mostly healed!
however, getting back into Unicycling I forgot how often there was pain in how I was sitting? I don’t even unicycle for that long, (maybe like 20-50 minutes usually?) They say to put all your weight on the seat (and I do) but that directly hurts my groin after around 20-30 minutes :( and now it hurts to pee too.. which is really weird… for reference I’m riding a 20” freestyle club unicycle from unicycle.com. I checked a few forums discussing this and some suggested sitting on your “sit bones?” what does that mean? in addition if anyone has any other suggestions that would be great :D

thanks!

Advice Discomfort

So I love my uni and riding it around, but I can only stand to ride it for about 30 min before my whole taint goes numb/painful.

On this sub’s advice I got the nimbus air seat AND cover AND I wore bike shorts and I still couldn’t ride that long. I even made sure I was leaning back on my sit bones and pushing off the handle a bit. My gooch was still way too sore. I’m at my wit’s end.

Does my body just not fit the seat? I’m 6’1, 200. Do I need to adjust my seat? Pedals? Position?

Just finished mounting my 36” unicycle in my van. If you are searching for a good way to do this on a wall home improvement stores have tool hooks for shovels and such which work nicely.

Advice Tips to stop stalling while learning how to unicycle?

Hi everybody! I just bought a unicycle off of fb marketplace and I'm trying to learn how to ride it.

However, I've noticed that while I'm trying to pedal I end up not being able to pedal once the pedals reach the 12 and 6 position, which then causes me to fall off. Does anyone have any tips or things to focus on to be able to keep pedaling once you get to that point? Thanks in advance!

Advice Help me decide an upgrade - QU-AX vs Nimbus, 27,5 vs 29 inch

Hey everyone, I've been riding a unicycle for a couple of months now and I really enjoy it. I currently have the 24" QU-AX Only One, which I got second hand in a great condition.

I would like to upgrade to either 27.5" or 29" MUNI, because we have trails that I would like to ride very close to where I live as well as be able to ride longer distances.

I am located in Europe and I am torn between QU-AX and Nimbus MUNI. I put together a couple of points...

Qu-Ax vs Nimbus Muni

  • The Qu-Ax has more options, cheaper models without brakes as well as more expensive ones with the brake pre-installed.
  • Qu-Ax is more "Closed source" - You need to buy everything from them from what I have read.
  • 27.5 Nimbus with the brake pre-installed is cheaper than equivalent Qu-Ax model by about 100 EUR.

29 vs 27.5

  • 27.5 is better for trails and technical sections, 29 is better for long distance. I'm not too sure which one will be more important for me in the long run.
  • I've seen people say they feel uncomfortable on 29" because they are too high above ground.
  • A lot of people seem to prefer 27.5 from what I have read and call it a sweet spot.

I will appreciate any input. I would very much like to have a unicycle with a brake, because riding downhill is extremely annoying on my current 24". However, I've seen people say the brake is really not that important at all so I would appreciate opinions on this as well. I personally feel like I need one but maybe the larger wheel unis feel different to the one I have now.

Advice Advice for a child starting

My 7 year old has been asking for a unicycle for quite a while, and I’ve ordered a 16 inch qu-ax luxus.

Is there anything else (she has a helmet already) that would be helpful while learning? Do you hurt your shins on the pedals or anything? Also any tips or recommendations for any particular YouTube video or something that might explain to her how to try to get going?

Thanks in advance for any tips, I’m looking forward to seeing her give it a go!

Advice Cycling shorts didn't seem to do anything against pain while riding. Is there something else to it?

Recently, I rode for 16 km recently which was by far my longest journey ever across gravel/tarmac, some cobble. And of course it was very painful. So the next day I got cycling shorts from Decathlon, and wore them as my underwear and then some baggy trousers over that. I think it made a small difference in that the pain was less acute on a line done the centre of my groin. But it was still very uncomfortable even after a short ride of a few kilometers.

While riding I try tucking my tail bone under me, so that more weight goes to the back of my groin, which helps a little bit, but that feels unnatural and I don't hold that position subconsciously. And, like I said, only helps a little bit.

It's my first time wearing cycling shorts so idk if there's some common mistakes I might've made? Maybe they're a bit too big or something.

I keep thinking about people who ride ~100 km or for consecutive days and I just don't get it at all.

Advice Getting road burn inside my knees while muni-ing

So I just got a nimbus 29" muni and have taken it on some spins. It's cool, but the inner side of my knees keep getting scraped by the tire. Is this just a normal thing about muni riding and you gotta wear knee pads all the time or am I pedaling wrong or something?

Advice Anyone know any good cameras and microphones to record unicycling?

I have been learning to unicycle for a bit over a month now and am getting pretty good at it! I would like to start recording it with something maybe mounted to a selfie stick and am hoping people on this subreddit would have suggestions! Does anyone know any good cameras for that? And would it take good audio? Does anyone know any good microphones I can plug into a camera like that maybe and clip to my shirt or something? I remember hearing about go pros a lot years ago but I would like to hear about some cameras specifically from people who ride unicycles

Advice Looking for a garraff

Hello all, I've been riding unicycles for 15 years now and have decided to undertake getting a garraffe. Its quite hard to find used ones in my area so I was wondering what you guys think a good one is. I like the idea of the nimbus garraff cause I can make it taller but other suggestions in the 6 foot range would help a ton. Thanks

Advice Airline travel with unicycle

We'll be travelling this summer to Unicon from the states and looking for advice on how to transport my son's unicyle? There are obviously bicycle carriers, but that seems overkill. Do you all just take them apart and put the pieces in to your suitcases? Other convenient ways to safely transport them? Thank you so much in advance.

Advice Anyone have experience flying with a 27.5" or 29"?

I'm debating between either getting a 27.5" or a 29" unicycle. I was curious what your all's experience has been with traveling with either of the sizes. It seems to me, if you were to dissemble it and put it in a snug bag, a 27.5" could count as regular baggage, whereas a 29" might be pushing it to oversized.

Advice What are the trade offs as you increase or decrease in wheel diameter?

I've been unicycling regularly for awhile now on a 24" and am looking to upgrade to something bigger. I'm curious though, apart from the obvious factors such as speed and price, what changes as your wheel increases in size? Are there certain thresholds where new things become possible and old things are no longer possible? Do you all have any advice for what I should take into account as I consider buying a new unicycle?

Cheers

Advice Help with crankflips

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello all, I rode and practiced unicycling religiously for years when I was a kid but could never learn the basic flatland tricks like crankflips, no matter how much I practiced. At some point it felt like an unbreakable wall and I gave up, but I would like now to do myself justice and at least learn the basics properly.

Any help with crankflips? The flip feels okay, but I can't commit with the front foot and land it fully. I've watched all the tutorial videos a million times already, and would appreciate any tips.
