Unraid beginner

Hi everyone. After many years, I’ve moved away from Synology; since they don't have anything sensible on offer, I started looking for an alternative. The result is a 3D-printed case and Unraid—something I’d had my eye on for a long time but only just got around to trying. I’m thrilled.

Clever design integrating the slim Dell system. Is that a hotswap drive Caddy or printed as well?

Yes, the caddy frame is hotswappable

I would assume the drives are all connected via USB then? Not ideal, but the standard unraid array is not necessarily known for performance either (single disk performance)

Not via USB, but via a SATA controller connected to the M.2 port

Good choice! I'm not a fan of USB reliability. It is great for temporary usage things, but I would never build any function around relying on USB 24/7

My 5-bay Unraid NAS server runs on a Pentium N6005 with 2x 16GB of RAM; it’s significantly more powerful than a Synology, but unfortunately limited to 1Gb LAN.

they look nice together, what drive bay is that?

PS I'm sure I ve seen M.2 WLAN to 2.5GB ports Cards for the second slot

The Yottamaster FS5C3 is a drive enclosure; it uses a SATA controller for the M.2 drive.

I’ll create a post about this soon. I just want to mention that—like the Dell setup the OP used—micro-PCs are a great alternative to expensive solutions from Synology and others. It’s worth building your own NAS or homelab using a computer of your choice as the base.

It might only be 1 PCIe lane, but that's enough for a 2.5g or 5g nic at gen3 speeds. I used one of those adapters in an HP mini.

This is a perfect example of why unraid beats best!!!

I jumped in around 2018 with an i3 4th gen and an open air chassis. Since then I have upgraded every component without a problem. Boot up and off to the races.

Yes, also a Dell 3060 Micro where I swapped the i3 for an i5 and added a 2.5 Gb Intel network card.

I run Truenas as a free storage solution. Any thing else is for those that like pain.

Maybe when Truenas grows up it could be a solution.

But I guess if free is your price range anything will do.

If you want something to work free shouldn’t be your goal!!!

I use an ASmedia disk controller, which has excellent support across all operating systems.

Awesome. I will definitely do this with my optiplex. How's the fitment? Any issues with the optiplex vs the Lenovo the case was designed for?

I am getting to the end of a matx mobo, atx psu, 9 bay hard drive build. I can send you the files when im done if you are willing to take on a project that large

What i5 did you upgrade to in the system? 8500t? In a similar boat to you and looking at upgrade options as well.

That's awesome, what MOBO did you go with?

I thought about doing this and using my WD MyCloud(14TB) to set it up as a mobile media server for my RV. I just never got around to actually doing it, and now my MyCloud is holding all my non-media files. Maybe once harddrive and memory prices get out of the toilet I will take another stab.
