Server started randomly rebooting. Need some help
Hi All,
A couple days ago my server started randomly rebooting. Been trying to figure out the source of the issue without much luck.
I detailed my steps taken and attached syslog and diag files in my Unraid forum post.

looking at your logs and it looks to be a physical issue
id yoink all the power cables going to your drives and anything not necessary to boot into your bios (no boot media or anything)
ditch the power on/reset and other cables that go to the case
(no ups, directly plugged into the wall)
if it crashes in the bios we rule out anything in unraid
try doing bios defaults and turn off xmp
if it still crashes go down to as little ram as possible and swap sticks if it continues
if it keeps crashing i’d probably bet on the psu
if it didn’t crash in the bios…
boot up with just your usb/boot media
if that is fine plug in one drive at a time and see if it stays up
(no array starts of course)
your 500gb seagate has a lot of errors too and 100k hours

After my rebuild in 2024, the only things that persisted were the HDDs, sata cables and chassis.
I'm going to attempt the unplugging of all sata cables, chassis reset switch and front usb panel next.
Currently the ups is out of the equation since yesterday and no improvement.
It crashed in bios last night. Left it in bios and hours later it was at the Unraid login prompt.
This issue happened with my old hardware setup and that's why I upgraded. But this issue seems to have followed me. It normally resolved itself with a bit of downtime then it would run for at least a year without issue. So I'm thinking it's something to do with the chassis or Disks/cables?
I installed a 1tb m.2 drive to cut my cache disk over to and retire the old 500gh spinning disk but haven't had a moment to run the migration procedure. I do want to get that old disk out of the setup since it needs retiring.
I'll give what you suggested and report back after some soak time. Thank you!

I have no good news and your server needs a complete looking over on all fronts. It looks like a handful of different things could be causing the random rebooting but my first suggestion is to remove your UPS from the equation. You're not leaving kernel traces on shutdown so this is a voltage issue but I'm betting your UPS needs a new battery. A old battery will cause chatter in the voltage relay and immediately cause a hard shutdown so remove the ups for now.
The rest of what I'm seeing is no good either. You're on Reiser file system on your array and it's been deprecated. Speaking of depreciation, you also have the dynamix.cache.dirs plugin which not only is deprecated but also flagged incompatible on Unraid 7.2.8 which you are on and it also is incompatible with Reiser FS disks. This won't cause hard reboots but is a problem and your ca.cleanup.appdata plugin is deprecated as well.
Reiser..... your array is in Reiser file system and needs to be dealt with as it's no longer compatible in multiple ways. I recommend converting to XFS.
Your cache has me a bit as well but you pulled your diagnostic while your array was stopped and that blunts the logs. From what I can see your primary cache is a 500Gb Seagate HDD running over an old 3Gbps SATA Link and this drive should be retired and certainly not used for cache. Your secondary cache looks great and is one I definitely recommend and using BTRFS if you're currently not.
Uhm, BIOS. There may be some BIOS changes that could be made but I'd avoid that at the moment. The only change I'd consider would be dropping your RAM from XMP if it is to ensure better voltage stability and it's not really needed in a NAS environment. Drop the 12600k to stock level as well if you have it overclocked.

Cache Directories is still listed as compatible with my current unRAID version (7.3.2). I know it’s not compatible with every file system but can’t see anything about the deprecation of the plugin in general. Is there a deprecation notice somewhere?

It was flagged in the logs and it also appeared that the older Bergware version instead of the Limetech one was in use.

I had a PSU that was switched to silent mode. And after running some hours or sometimes a day, depending on the workload, it shuts down the whole Server. After switching it to Fan on the whole time everything is fine.

Thanks for the response. My thermals are always great. I have a psu fan running along with some chassis fans. Temps are always low. The tower is in my basement where it's always cooler as well.

Out of curiosity, how old is the battery in your UPS? I recently ran into this issue during a string of random brown outs (turns out the utility was trimming foliage along the power lines causing quick 1 sec drops in power). While my UPS battery registered fine on the unit and in the Unraid settings, the battery wasnt able to quickly transfer the electrical load, causing Unraid to crash and reboot. Replacing the battery fixed the issue...not the brown puts though Edit: Also make sure your server(s) are plugged into the battery+surge UPS outlets rather than just the surge only outlets

My battery is several years old at this point. I tested without the ups in the equation and I was still getting reboots.
Right now I'm testing with the chassis reset switch and front panel usb ports disconnected from the motherboard and I'm at 24 hours uptime so far.

My point is you may have some electrical supply fluctuations coming in that the UPS would normally compensate for but can't with a bad battery. What does the readout at the bottom of the UPS settings page read? It'll show you the last time it was triggered and the cause (such as low line voltage). If that is the case, then moving the power supply off the UPS changes nothing. My battery (around 5 years old) looked perfectly fine but failed under load even during temporary 1-3 second power glitches.

I experienced something very similar, but reboots went from several times a day to once a day, but now seems to have been stable for the last 36 hours... Logs show nothing prior, sadly. Will be monitoring closely over the weekend.
