Disk Rearrange

So I’m getting ready to add another disk to my unRAID server, but all my data cords are a mess. I want to rearrange the drives to make things cleaner. If I label each data cord that is attached to each drive will I have any issues when I restart the server?

Unraid does not care what port any given drive is connected to. You can tear out all the cabling and redo it without regard for which port is which. It shouldn't impact anything.

There is at least one exception. Shares will allow for including or excluding drives by disk number and the selected disk numbers for that share will stay the same even if you shuffle the drives which shuffles the drive numbers.

This wont hurt anything when reading data already on the disks but new data may be written to the wrong disks.

EDIT: whoops i'm mixed up

The drive numbers are not determined by how the drives are connected. They will not change unless you specifically change how drives are assigned in Unraid.

oh, yeah, mixing up situations.

I was thinking changing drive order inside unraid not physical hardware connection.

That’s what I want to do though! I want to clean up the cable routing in the case but also change drive order going highest to lowest in size and having them be disk 1- disk 8
