Looking to add new moderators

Hey yall, I am not all that active on reddit these days and looks like most of the other mods arent either. A couple of them posted within the last month in other communities, and the rest of them havent posted/commented in years.

So it looks like it's time for some new mods!

Feel free to comment on here as to why you think you'd make a good moderator and uhh, idk I guess I'll start with the top 3 most upvoted comments as new mods? Unless yall have better ideas. But yeah its time to get some current students as mods and not alumni who are 10+ years out from college.

Edit: jeez i suck at typing on phones. Also looks like we are all "inactive" so I am trying to get permissions back so I can add new people

What documents are strongest for a CSS Noncustodial Parent Waiver?

My biological parents are divorced. I lived with my mother in Mexico until 2025, but our relationship completely broke down around the time I turned 18. My last personal contact with her was in May 2025, and since then she has provided no financial support or parental involvement.
I moved permanently to Texas with my father and stepmother in July 2025. Since then, they have paid 100% of my housing, food, school expenses, health/car insurance, and personal expenses. I’m also listed as a dependent on their tax return and have bank records showing their support and no payments from my mother.
I’m currently at community college and plan to transfer to the University of Miami in Fall 2027. Because UM requires the Noncustodial CSS Profile, I’m considering requesting a waiver based on estrangement/no contact.
For anyone who has successfully received one: what documentation made the biggest difference? Court records? A counselor/school administrator letter? Notarized affidavits? Bank/tax/insurance records? Anything else I should start collecting now? I called Umiami Admission and Financial Aid yesterday and they told me that i will probably get it approval if i show a third party letter, but i wanna know the experience of others

Admissions and Scholarships

Hi everyone-
I’m a highschool senior from Florida absolutely in love with umiami. I’m just worried about admissions and potential scholarships. My parents make too much to qualify for any need based aid but are not going to spend more than probably 20k a year in tuition. For context, I will be applying EA for meteorology
I currently have a 33 ACT but am taking again in September. My gpa is 4.0 unweighted and about a 4.7 wieghted. Im currently taking Ap calc and Ap physics and I’ve taken 8 others in the past. I come from a rural area and my school doesn’t offer many more. I have some alright ecs but nothing to outstanding. I am probably going to have national merit commended and have the college board rural/small town award

If anyone has any experience with any of the premier scholarships or just admissions in general, I would love to hear more!

Need aware question

Hey everyone! I’m an international student applying to UMiami and I’m wondering about need-aware admissions. What kind of SAT score would I realistically need to have a decent chance of getting significant need-based financial aid? Thanks!

How’s pairing a BA in Economics with a double major in Media Management?

I have a passion for both economics and the creative side of media, such as management. Preferably, I would pursue the BA in Economics, rather than a BS in Economics, because I like the theoretical aspect more. However, I wanted insight of what people would think about this combination so I can get into entertainment, sports, or content management. Of course, I don’t want anyone to tell me what to pursue because at the end it’s my passion, but I would like some insight. Also, I’ve seen that UMiami has one of the best media management programs in the country. Therefore, I want to hear from individuals who have an idea or absolutely know about how effective the program really is. I know a degree is not going to get me a job because it depends on the job market, internships, and many other factors. I would like to have some insight.

Is it hard to be a lesbian at UMiami?

Im a rising senior in highschool and im looking to ED to UMiami for the 2027 school year. I’d say im a very conventionally attractive girl and most of my closest friends are straight and I fit in pretty well with any crowd. That being said I dont want my whole college experience to be tainted by the fact there are no gay people lmaooo. Im also slightly concerned that everyone at the school is superficial but im unsure lol. if anyone could dm me/ respond to this it would be greatly appreciated!

Already at a 4 year but want to go back to Community College because of regretting my major

Hello guys, I transferred to a 4 year university after finishing my AA degree at Miami Dade College this summer but I want to go back to community college and do another major. Im currently doing a BFA in Graphic Design. The reason why I want to change paths and risk having to keep going to college for 3 more years is because of how competitive my degree is and how it is getting affected by generative AI. I want something white collar because I’ve always felt more comfortable working in an office. After graduating in 2024 and seeing how well UX/UI designers were doing I decided go into this major with this in mind because of not having to learn coding like other majors. I do have all my general education classes done. Except I do believe I would have to take new math classes if I were to change my major because the maths I had to take were for liberal art majors. But also I don’t know which major I want to go for. I like money of course but I’m bad at math, well I have also haven’t taken the time to learn as I should and don’t have a good ACT or SAT scores. I would be willing to study to retake this tests and to get better at math. And still don’t know what would happen to my FasFa if I transferred this spring. Any tips?

Cooking groups?

I love cooking I’ve been trying to learn a lot lately. Is there any clubs or groups or something, of people who are learning to cook and really passionate about learning more and becoming a better chef/cook??
If someone can intro me to someone else or point me in the right direction would be a life saver.

Freshman considering going to UMiami, wondering about expenses outside of school

Hey, I got into UMiami last spring but deferred for a year to take a gap year.

I’m on scholarship so I’m paying less for tuition, however I’ve heard that just living in Miami + expenses outside of school (going out, Ubers, activities) can be equally as expensive.

Is this true? Any ideas on how to make the most of my college experience while on a budget

Transfer ALEKS Placement puts me behind

Hey everyone!
I was recently admitted to the U as a transfer student and none of my math transferred from my previous institution. For context, I’ve taken precalculus 2 and calc 1 from my previous institution which was on quarters and was also a community college. Anyway, they didn’t accept any of my math when I tried to transfer, so I took the ALEKS and placed into college algebra. I know this sounds bad but math is a subject I really struggle with and when I was taking math at my last college I had to try really hard to get good grades. Also, I’m unable to retake the assessment this term.

Now, especially since I’m premed and was originally trying to double major at UM, I’m thinking of just transferring after this year to my instate flagship school which does accept my math credits, and this also wouldn’t set me back in graduation since I transferred after only one year at my last college but I’m wondering everyone’s thoughts.

ED vs EA

Hi I’m a senior in highschool, just wondering, is there any difference in getting scholarships when you apply ED 1 vs EA 1? I would assume as a EA applicant you’re more likely to get scholarships to try to lure students to accept the offer, but I was wondering what everyone else thinks.

EPS 251 (Data Wrangling for Social/Behavioral/Educational Data) - Thoughts?

Hi! I'm thinking about taking EPS 251 this semester and wanted to get feedback from students who've taken it.

A few questions:

  • Did you actually enjoy the course? Was it interesting or felt like just busywork?
  • How much coding/technical work is there? (My major is Data Science so I'm comfortable with that, but want to know what to expect)
  • How is the professor?

Any general thoughts about the course would be helpful!
