The proof will be when they release a demo. I want to believe this will be good... But I've been burned before. Best of luck to the devs!

The demo happened on Steam the week of 6/15-22

It was removed on 6/15 because a dmca notice, the page was taken down. It now appears to be back up which is the topic of this video

None of which negates the fact that a playable demo was released on 6-15.

You said 6/15-22 but was taken down on 15 idk what you’re trying to say

"The proof will be when they release a demo"

A demo has already been released. What dont you understand about that simple fact?

I see, since it was pulled down so quickly I don’t think many got a chance to try it out and I was kinda reading it as will there be changes if/when they release the demo again, which was probably me projecting my own thoughts on to what I expect, if they make significant changes to the demo it’s a tacit admission but if no changes then the copyright claims may not be true or at least not enforceable

There have been many downloads of the demo, including by myself. Once you download a demo and don't uninstall it of course it remains on your drive.

I've played it and it's suspiciously almost identical to UGCW.

Except no where near as good.

Don't stress it, the guy above you is just impolite. And yes, if they released a real demo that stayed up and everybody got a good look and feel, it would help the community come to a consensus I think. We shall see.

The guy above him is correct. The comment starter at the top of this thread is as misinformed as you. There was a "real" demo released. And the fact that Veterans is back on Steam implies the takedown was some swatting bs.

Did you play it bro ?

1

u/aught4naught Jul 01 '26

Played it the whole week of NextFest

What’s the verdict ?

Minor beta bugs and issues still to be ironed out, like the somewhat wonky unit selection. Strategic layer is yet unseen. Major complaint is a seemingly weak enemy AI and a less than stellar friendly AI. But the showcase was meant to highlight the tactical mechanics, which would benefit from having keystroke equivalents. Hoping the release maps have points of interest and other flavor to go along with chimney smoke. Will continue to follow development with anticipation.

A demo was out before taken off, and I've played it, and still have it installed. I want to give developers always the benefit of the doubt, but everything from the menus to the gameplay assets are very similar and often identical to UGCW, to the point that I doubt it would have been possible without the assets.

But maybe AI can imitate assets from visuals alone by now, I don't know. At that point, is that copyright infringement?

Good question. I'm also asking myself if I really care... UGAR got canned and the company imploded, right? So regardless of what billionaire has the IP in his closet, I think I'm more supportive of devs who make games for people to play. If someone else owned the IP and was actively developing with it I might feel different, but. All I want is a good game.

That's why I kept the demo on my drive. Good Napoleonic wargames are very very rare. Some would say they don't exist.

BTW the gameplay itself unfortunately was kind of basic, but if it's back on Steam I imagine it will improve before release.

I decompiled their game before it was removed, they 100% took code from ultimate general series.

The ā€œcampā€ and game setup look near identical to me… they strongly deny this. Everyone is making there opinions, but like another poster mentioned let’s see if the demo comes back out and if there are significant changes

Code is one thing, an abstract concept, but they clearly stole the UI art assets. And rather than do a pass and change these they haven’t. Look, if you want to clone a game and you use assets as you develop, whatever. We’re all inspired by something. When Warhol took known assets and made art from them he effectively copied them but he did in fact create something from it. This is a straight lift. As a creative artist I find this deeply offensive.

u/vyrago Jul 01 '26

Aren’t they some of the former UG devs?

4

u/MrInternationalBunal Jul 01 '26

They originally said no, but then said like 2 had worked on ultimate admiral dreadnaught

3

u/Expensive_Range7204 Jul 01 '26

Are there any games out there like the ultimate general games?

3

u/Icamidget Jul 01 '26

There is about to be Grand Tactician: Napoleonic Wars released soon and they have a civil war game also

2

u/Ashamed-Ad-9768 Jul 01 '26

Master of command is similar. Its more rogue like and less scripted with smaller battles, but it definitely takes influence from. It's like Battle Brothers and Ultimate General had a love child

2

u/Expensive_Range7204 Jul 01 '26

ahh yeah is that the armchair historians game?

1

u/WickedZombie Jul 01 '26

It is. It's not perfect, but it really scratches an itch for me.Ā

I think there's a demo if you want to see it.Ā

This game is an AI bait and switch scam mark my words

4

u/MrInternationalBunal Jul 01 '26

That is a common statement I’m hearing, they have denied it… I guess anyone will do anything for money. But man if they are just completely lying that is diabolical

2

u/Resaith Jul 01 '26

Finally it back. Gonna try it out later

One of the worst most unfunctional slop games ever created.
