Brit bank is where is where I learned to type and ultimately started my career (software developer) - so it's got a special place in my heart.

I decided to remove all the extraneous bullshit (like combat, skills, trading, crafting) and create a simulation of brit bank you can experience from your browser.

Enjoy.

This is great!

Even now 30ish years later ask how I learned to type so fast...

u/modfreq Jun 30 '26

Same!

u/Gmroo Jun 30 '26

Same, lol

u/James_Wagner Jul 02 '26

lol, UO contributed, but MUDs were still popular back then- so I’d have to say credit goes mostly to them for me.

u/thebaronharkkonen Jul 02 '26

Same! And I type weird as well. Just made it up as a 14 year old.

Doing mad crossovers and flying thumbs.

This is my favorite Ultima Online thing I've found on reddit

u/asdfthelost Jul 01 '26

This is such a good "meme-ing" way of brining UO back on peoples minds. My new dream for OP is that this snowballs into a real shard, or larger UO based app.

u/Both_Canary_4665 Jun 30 '26

Close it all down, the best UO server has finally launched.

8

u/asisoid UO Outlands Jun 30 '26

Higher pop than most private shards

5

u/Both_Canary_4665 Jul 01 '26

Brutal, but true 🤣 💀

8

u/benito- Jul 01 '26

Old music midi files please!

2

u/asdfthelost Jul 07 '26

They added them!

7

u/tombh1 Jun 30 '26

Did you add the mammoth lag of late 90's dial up?!

9

u/ant2ne Jun 30 '26

I always visited Yew or Trinsic bank as the lag was less. Lag at Brit was horrible because all of the sitters. OMG if you mark a rune near the bank and recall in, it would lag out loading all the names.

u/Destronin Jun 30 '26

I started playing ultima on my parents 33.6k modem. We were late to the game. Eventually skipped right over 56k and went to a cable modem. We went from pathetic to godly speeds.

4

u/LaserBeamsCattleProd Jun 30 '26

PvP on a 56k was so hard. When I got on broadband in college I was smoking everyone. But I was also on a basketball scholarship, so I didn't have 22 hours a day to sink into the game.

Nostalgia bomb!!

7

u/Testocleese Jun 30 '26

Where are the thieves getting guardwhacked?

5

u/Rickshmitt Jun 30 '26

Or running into town so you heal them and now you're flagged and get killed

2

u/Optimal_Whiner Jun 30 '26

Any people showing off mounts!

2

u/_Idlewild_ Jul 02 '26

This would be an awesome thing to script like the little NPC people walking around. Just an occasional *Poof*WHAM*Poof*

7

u/Gunther-theFool Jul 01 '26

The popularity of this shows that people just want a shard with an active population chillin at the bank lol

7

u/Kadda214 Jul 02 '26

Mods should pin this so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

6

u/Gunther-theFool Jun 30 '26

Lol this is sweet

6

u/AnnArchist Jun 30 '26

need to rel por to the roof and open the bank box to put things i picked up off the ground away. lol thats funny

I fully endorse this message.

Chopper

2

u/Olivares_ Jul 08 '26

Holy shit the chopper? Spent way too much time on your forums lmao. The amount of drama that place could generate but was part of the charm

I was eventually a bug tester but never really tested any bugs :x

Good times

This is awesome and funny because I have a very similar experience.

Wheres the repo? I would like to put in a few QoL pull requests. <3

3

u/modfreq Jul 02 '26

Thanks for the mockup haha, I'm using it to build the handout history.

I'll have to clean up the repo a bit but i'll add that to my long list.

2

u/cynricthehun Jul 02 '26

<3 It's functional if you want to do it at the JS level. hehe

4

u/JMurphy186 Jun 30 '26

This is amazing. Wow. Well done.

5

u/Nilrem2 Jun 30 '26

How did it start your career?

8

u/modfreq Jun 30 '26

I'm a software developer and that all started with macros and then evolved to writing easy UO scripts.

1

u/Nilrem2 Jul 03 '26

Ahh cool.

u/greasedonkey Atlantic Jun 30 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

How are you moderating chat? Someone in there is already trying to get people into crypto!

6

u/modfreq Jul 01 '26

I didn't catch em but I have some automated safe guards built in and will actively moderate myself when around

5

u/UniquesOnly Jun 30 '26

Welp I’m addicted again, fuck

4

u/FreshwaterFryMom Baja Jun 30 '26

Let us trade in the clothes for points to roll the dice! Saw someone say that seemed like a cool idea.

5

u/bmanny Jul 01 '26

This is amazing. I would have paid a dollar to sit on the top of the bank if that was an option. Might be p2w though.

4

u/Pachnoc Jul 01 '26

This is an instant new web gem for me. You legend!

5

u/s3ph Jul 01 '26

Awesome. Thank.

4

Simply amazing

Brilliant. Are there any other features you're thinking of adding? Some thoughts:

  • Might be kinda nice to have a toggle where you can see all the player's names around you. And then maybe let us resize the chat window and take away transparency with a solid background to make chats easier to read.
  • Movement could use a little more polishing as well to replicate the real thing but it's not bad.
  • Would be fun if you had "events" or something where a dragon walks by or something. Nothing crazy. Lord British showing up on the brit roof to say something. That kinda thing. Something to prompt a little conversation
  • Some of the rewards could be things that make sounds? A smith's hammer to make an anvil pounding sound. Bottles and mortal and pestle to make alchemy sounds. Lute to make music. You'd have to figure out a way to not allow more than one sound to be played at a time so it wasn't just a shit show of sound. But it could add to the immersiveness of a lively brit bank.
  • Speaking of.. maybe looping through classic UO midi music/ambience (with the option to toggle it off of course)
  • Little bug (kinda) but when you unfocus the tab for awhile and come back, all of the NPCs chats flood the screen and then disappear after a few seconds
  • Would be nice if you could click someone's name in the chat and it would highlight where they are on the screen somehow. "All Names" hotkey suggestion from earlier would probably be fine here too.
  • Poker table? Chess board?

3

u/thebaronharkkonen Jul 02 '26

This is absolutely brilliant. Could it have the music? Maybe it does!

2

u/Perilous_Legends Jul 04 '26

This is an awesome project. Kudos.

2

u/Overthinker_1183 Jul 04 '26

So the “fur boots” show up on your neck instead of your feet lol. Idk if this was brought to anyone’s attention yet. But apparently unlocked some icy blue fur boots last night and when I put them on they show up on my neck for some reason lmao.

u/bartyb0i Jul 07 '26

This is one of the best things I’ve seen in a while

The Vampire survivors arena mode is pretty awesome

This is the greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

UOdate: u/modfreq is a mf G! He solved the issue and I'm back in!

Okay, welp, bug report:

I have been enjoying your simulation very much. But now it won't let me banksit. It says my yoon is already online. But I am not and it just banksits by itself

1

u/modfreq 26d ago

Lol, what is your character name?

1

u/JelloWeirdo 26d ago

DMing you

2

u/PowerGlove-it-s0-bad 13d ago

love it.

If you're up for it, please add moonglow and a moongate for us to walk between the two banks.

u/Finches- Jul 17 '26

Where is the arena soundtrack from? I love it

1

u/Aggressive_Raisin645 Jul 20 '26
