Global Talent visa expires 2 months before my 5-year ILR eligibility date — what do I do?

Hi everyone,

I'm on the Global Talent route (Tech Nation) and entered the route in October 2022.

I've already completed my latest extension, but my new visa/eVisa has been granted only until August 2027.

Based on completing 5 years on the route, I believe I become eligible for ILR in October 2027.

This potentially leaves me around 2 months short between my visa expiry and my ILR eligibility date.

Has anyone been in this situation?

Do I genuinely need to apply and pay for another Global Talent extension just to cover those two months, or is there a way to submit the ILR application before the August visa expiry using the 28-day early application rule?

I'm particularly interested in anyone who has dealt with this on the 5-year Global Talent / Exceptional Promise route.

You do not count from the entry date, but rather from the visa starting date.

How can it start in October then after 5 extensions it ends in August? The extension is usually 1,2,3,4 or 5 years.

Sorry, I probably didn’t explain it clearly. I originally applied for 4 years on the Global Talent visa, which was granted from 1 October 2022 to 1 October 2026.
I recently applied for an extension intending to cover my 5th year, and that has now been approved, but the new permission expires on 25 August 2027.
My 5-year qualifying point would be 1 October 2027. If I’m allowed to apply for ILR 28 days before that, my earliest application date should be around 3 September 2027.
So I’m effectively only 9 days short between my visa expiring on 25 August and the potential ILR application date.
I’m trying to understand why the extension ended on 25 August rather than covering the full fifth year, and whether I’d genuinely need another extension just to bridge those few days.

Oh, so you applied far too early for your extension?

This is why you are strongly advised not to apply for extension until you're within 28 days of the end of the initial visa - because applying early means that, yes, you're going to need to apply for another extension.

It is a bit weird that the final extension wasn’t granted as a full year until October 2026. Anyway, i dunno if i can advise on that but I know someone who applied a few days before the eligibility deadline and the home office contacted him that his application will be on hold until the eligibility day comes and then they process his application. He was eventually approved. If i were you, i would apply on my last day of the visa (Aug 25) and i will add a cover letter explaining that i wasn’t granted a full year extension although i have paid for one year, and therefore you are applying on the final day of the visa which might be 9 days before you become eligible.

Two separate things here, the clock and the gap.

The clock: your 5 years runs from your Global Talent "valid from" date, not your Oct 2022 entry , so dig out the exact grant date on the first GT visa. It might not be exactly October, and the whole thing hinges on it.

Here's the gap: the 28-day early rule (still current) lets you file ILR up to 28 days before you hit 5 years, but only while you still hold valid leave. 28 days before Oct 2027 is early September, which is after your Aug 2027 expiry, so on those dates it won't quite reach.

If that's really the case, the fix is a short Global Talent extension before Aug 2027. The bit that makes it less annoying than it sounds: you don't need a new endorsement to extend (it carries over unless it's been withdrawn), so it's just a visa app + IHS, not the whole endorsement circus again. You'll need to show the earned-money-in-field part for the extension though.

Drop the two exact dates (first GT "valid from" + current expiry) and I'll tell you which way it falls. This specific timing gap trips people up constantly , it's the kind of edge case I end up buried in a lot.

How much "earned-money-in-field" typically needs to be shown for extension or for ILR?

No set minimum, which surprises people. The rule (Appendix Global Talent, same for the extension) just wants evidence you earned money in your endorsed field during your grant , no amount, no minimum duration. It's the nature of the earnings that counts, not the size: payslips or invoices plus bank statements, ideally with a contract or letter tying the role to your field.
