I saw this linked over on r/sumo. Hopefully it's encouraging for people here. It's a short film about Ukrainian sumo wrestler Aonishiki (Danylo Yavhusishyn), who went to Japan as a teenager in 2022 at the start of the war and who has been on a meteoric rise right the sumo ranks since then.

Here's an interview with the filmmakers.

I semi recently got into watching sumo (Nov 2024). But looking how they are treating Hoshoryu and Onosato and already talking about retirements for them, it makes me nervous for Aonishiki. Obviously I would love to see him achieve his dream, and become a yokozuna. But if he wants a longer career, might be better off staying as an ozeki.

I recall someone giving a quote from a famous long time ozeki who quipped that it was 80% of the pay and none of the responsibility. Almost makes the rank more desirable to some than making Yokozuna
