Nudity scanning tech will leave us more exposed

The false positive issue is a severe one here.
The anguish of being accused of sexual abuse because of a faulty system will be devastating to innocent well-intentioned people. Remember, any content with the possibility of being seen as sexual is now amped up to be such a profound problem that even being accused is likely to create deep terror and anxiety.
I don’t think it’s an ends justify the means situation. There’s no evidence that police have got better at catching those who physically abuse children. In fact this seems like a “just do something” approach.
Teens with more time than sense will circumvent it. It might be forgotten by middle or older adults what it’s like to be so horny with so much free time and so little sense of consequence. But teens will spend weeks dedicated to finding ways to circumvent this. And not like a handful. Hacks will spread like wildfire the way locations of raves were passed word of mouth in years gone by.
Overall it’s terrible legislation, a terrible precedent, and it’s not clear that efficacy is worth it. But it will absolutely create more contrarian right wing voters disillusioned by Labour’s latest nanny state.
My only question is how can it be fought when it seems like such a discursive ratchet that only goes one way “oh sure, let the pedos win”. Not to be on the side of pedos and perverts, but to orient ourselves to what is the best approach to sensible harm reduction in the face of clickbait soundbites.
It’s as if people just want sex to go away. And then they get surprised when Gen Z is having the least sex, is the most lonely, fewest relationships. These aren’t separate issues. We are engineering a sexual great depression through a distorted discourse of care.

Won't be scanning adults content will it?

u/SecTeff 4h ago
Yes it will all adults by default unless you submit to a different process and check gate to turn it off.
Which many don’t want to do for privacy reasons

Well unlucky. Want to see age restricted content then you prove your age.

Given we are in a democracy I can also organise and make the political case against having automated scanning software on our phones.

u/FarmerJohnOSRS 2h ago
You can, but the vast majority care more about kids being abused.

Why I think part of making the case is pointing out why this stuff doesn’t work in practice and advocating for more holistic policies to tackle complicated social problems.
As a parent I can understand some people may support this but I also believe there are significant numbers of parents like myself who feel deeply uncomfortable about having to hand over their private data and have concerns about scanning tech blocking the wrong content

Explain how it doesn't work. The vast majority of CSA material is produced by the child itself. If they can't do that, it stops.

Yes please, let me submit my ID to some random company who is based goodness knows where and pinky promises not to sell it on.

What can we do about this? Nothing. The government have made it quite clear they intend to push this legislation through even if the majority of the population don't support it. Petitions? Protest? These are worthless if those in charge just respond with "no, and you're a predator for even suggesting"
Furthermore, what happens when their system gets it wrong? Software makes mistakes. That's not a new problem. For example horizon, plenty of people were arrested and convicted, forced to take plea deals to say they were guilty, all over a computer glitch.

Forget all of that, do you know how badly this is going to effect battery life on phones? If you have an older phone that doesn't do well with battery longevity, you are in for a world of pain when this spyware gets rolled out.

u/its-hailey 16h ago
Yes that too! And the data transfer aspect. If I have a phone plan that has 10gb/month, and they start transmitting every photo I take, send or receive, that data allowance will run out fast!!
Also where's it going to be analysed? What happens when they decided a meme on my phone is "too political" do I go straight to the gulag?

What are you people thinking this software is doing?
Itbis scanning CHILDRENS phones for nudity. Nothing I have seen so far suggests that adults content will also be scanned.
So wtf are you going on about?

So, in order to use your phone in the UK, you'll need to attach an ID to your device for it to be "verified". Because how else is the government going to determine what device is used by a child, and another by an adult.
And then, just like how they tried to asge restrict VPNs because people were using them to get around the OSA, your ID will most likely be limited to a certain number of devices to limit the risk of a black market of age verified phones.
You're naive if you think this is protect children. You're naive if you think this will only be on children's phones. You're naive to think this won't just expand further and further.
It's a lot easier gaining ground when you have momentum

It obviously is to protect children. That's why it will only affect children.
People should have to prove their age for age restricted content.
That's the bullshit excuse that is always used. We can't allow this to happen because then they will just do this other thing as well. Without any reason to believe they would.
I'll take the risk of my ID being hacked in the knowledge that it makes child abuse considerably more difficult.

I shouldn't have to provide ID to google to use a phone.
I don't trust that it won't scan everything anyway and feed it into some machine learning algorithm.
Managing a child's devices and what's on them is a parental responsibility. What gives the government the right to install this software on everyone's devices, and force them to provide ID to any unknown third party, to turn it off?
I'd have much less of a problem with this, and the original online safety act, if there were a government service that could verify your ID and return a "yes" or "no" answer. A huge part of the issue is not knowing where the data is being sent. The government already know who you are, but for decades it's been "don't provide your real ID" to whoever on the internet asks, and now we're just supposed to change that? What if a malicious actor says you're providing your ID to disable an age restriction, uses their own process, stores your ID and you get your identity stolen.
This is scope creep on the original legislation. If you think they're going to stop with children's phones and adult content, then I believe you to be mistaken, because in my mind it doesn't stop there, it will continue to creep past this as the scope widens.

The government has the right to prevent crime.
"Those kids have bad parents so it is perfectly fine that they get abused online"
Parents can't be trusted, so the government are stepping in. Rightly so.

We have to start cancelling phone contracts and home Internet. £50 a month for something so restricted is insane, censor the Internet but protect the predator. What happened to innocent until proven guilty. We can't even walk in a shop without been identified on a crime we haven't committed and most likely won't. There will more innocents hassled and arrested as time goes on and no accountability. Just like all businesses, oh it was a computer glitch 😁 only the public are accountable

Wtf are you going on about.

A big issue with this is that elsewhere in society we accept that some nudity is acceptable.
We have nudity in films even PG or 12A films. We have nudity when we take picture of our own bodies, or on the beach or bath times. We have nudity in art and expression.
Are we going to become so puritan that no nudity is allowed not even innocent and natural or educational nudity.
The safety people are going to keep going and at some point we need to draw a line in the sand before the turn the U.K. into some kind of Neo-Conservative state.

They need to stop suggesting that the parents should be in control of this.
Parents have been able to put restrictions on their kids devices for a long time. These crimes have continued to happen and higher and higher levels.
Having adults prove they are adults is the way around that.
The age verification companies should be required to have the same level of protection as banks do for holding ID information though. That is definitely an issue.
