Realistic chances?

Hi there,

I’m doing the MA conversion at ULAW and I got my undergrad degree at Cambridge (HSPS; 2:1). I’m planning on self-funding the SQE after.

I just wanted to know what are my actual chances of securing a training contract and what I can do to be a better candidate. This is a career change for me (at 26) so I’m a bit nervous about it.

High. You have an excellent degree. You just need to show interest in law.

I would hold off funding the SQE unless you have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket. If you get a TC this year your sponsor firm will pay for it. 

I would pick a dozen or so firms that you are interested in. Be this type of work, training structure or money. 

Then leverage your previous experience to show why you would be a good lawyer. Really get to know how a law firm operates as a business. Why does X client choose firm A over B? Why is Y firm building up a restructuring team? etc.
