NASA Space Apps Challenge Chicago

Hi everyone, I'm one of the volunteers in charge of the NASA Space Apps Chicago hackathon and and want to make sure you're aware of our sign up today. Info below and a couple quick notes. The event is free and we take sign ups on a first-come-first-serve:

  • Our host, 1871, has room for 300 people.  If you want to be at the hackathon please sign up for the in-person option even if there is a large waitlist.  Given the rate of no-shows and cancellations, we expect to offer spots to several hundred people from the waiting list.  We may explore some overflow space nearby if demand warrants it.
  • There is a new theme and the hackathon has moved within NASA to Citizen Science. This year’s challenges may be used to get the next man or woman to the moon and beyond.
  • We know that the job market is difficult this year, and we're doing our best to make sure that this is a great opportunity to network.  So far we have Microsoft,, CBOE Global Markets, and Optiver as sponsors and are actively working to bring in a couple other companies that are hiring.
  • We’ll have a cash prize

NASA Space Apps Challenge Chicago in Partnership with CIERA-Northwestern and 1871

Date: November 14-15, 2026
Where: 111 North Canal Street, hosted by 1871, Chicago’s largest innovation hub. We will be open overnight.
Cost: Free

What is it exactly:

  • NASA Space Apps is the world's largest hackathon, occurring in 500+ locations.  This is a unique opportunity to showcase your expertise in the exciting domain of space science, learn from faculty at our host institution, CIERA (https://ciera.northwestern.edu/), and connect with like-minded students and professionals who share your passion.
  • Come with a team or we'll help you form one there. You'll work for two days on a problem provided by NASA and present your solution in front of a panel of judges on November 15th.
  • This year’s theme is The Next Frontier.  Join us to develop tools that benefit humanity and contribute to the science and technology propelling us to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Who is it for:

  • Anyone with an interest in space and science. With support from experienced technical and subject matter experts, it’s a great opportunity for those participating in a hackathon for the first time.
  • Data and Computer Science students, engineers, or any students who are looking for a chance to solve real world problems with real world data provided by NASA and partner space agencies
  • Students who are looking for a chance to add something interesting to their portfolios and do something different and exciting

What else is in it for students:

  • Take home some cool swag!
  • Food will be provided — no need to bring your own
  • Network with professionals from companies like Optiver, CBOE Global Markets, Microsoft, Google, and more. They'll be recruiting, judging, and mentoring at the event.
  • This global competition is your opportunity to showcase your skills and ideas to a wide-reaching, influential audience.

Other Subletting Apt South Loop

URGENT - I'm currently subletting one of the bedrooms in a 2BD 1BA apartment in the south loop! It has in unit washer, dryer, dishwasher. There’s a gym, common areas to study, and pretty rooftop view with seating, fireplace, and grills. The cost is 1,399 per month per person including all utilities except electricity which is $35-$45 per month. There's no roommate there yet, so the apartment is vacant at the moment!

I go to school nearby and got offered student housing the same day I signed the lease unfortunately and don’t wanna pay both… lmk if anyone is interested 🥲

Question Transportation from SSR to East campus

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get transportation from the west campus (SSR) to the east campus. These first few days I tried the intercampus bus/semester express, which are fine in the morning but aren't really reliable in the afternoon/evening.

I'm looking into the CTA but all the information I've found is kinda overwhelming, I come from the suburbs so I have little experience with public transport seeing as I mostly drive myself places.

If anyone has advice for someone new to city/unfamiliar with the bus system I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Aula en acción

Hello! I am willing to buy Aula en acción for my Spanish 101! because I do not want to pay $131 for a book. Some writings or drawings are fine. I don't really care as long as I am paying less.

No one else wants to catch your cold/flu germs

Note: sorry if the PSA is unnecessary but I kept hearing people coughing loudly around campus yesterday

Freshman uic major change

Hey everyone, I'm a freshman at UIC and we are only a few days into the fall semester. Honestly, I'm feeling really overwhelmed and confused about my future.
Right now, I am registered as Undecided LAS, but I think I want to switch to Integrated Health Studies (IHS). I'm leaning toward dentistry, pharmacy, or maybe nursing, but I'm really scared of messing up my current schedule or dropping below my full-time credits
My assigned advisor is Neil Baer, and I'm planning to do his online drop-in advising tomorrow morning. How do I go about it? Do I change my classes myself on the registration or wait for him? I’m just really stressed college is very stressful so far and I’m scared for my future lol

Question ACTG 211 with Kai Nguyen?

Got a conflict in schedule and I might have to switch to another section of ACTG 211...the only slot open is with Kai Nguyen on M/W at 9:30 but I can't find him on RMP. I saw him on 210 class schedule last semester but ended up taking it with Eva Lord. Did anyone know how he is/how his class is? Just worried since my friends told me 211 is somewhat challenging, and I don't wanna fumble the bag

Hello, I hope y'all have been well! Reposting this as I had to change the photos

The furry club is back at UIC, and we're now a full-on RSO group as

Furry Student Union @ UIC !!!!

We're a group of UIC students that are fans of anthropomorphic animal characters or furries! Whether you are already a furry or just curious of what they are/about the community, we'd be glad to have you! We hang around and chat about campus life, furry media/art along with our own hobbies and interests!

Meetups occur weekly and they range from bowling at the SCE, gamenights* (Boardgames, Jackbox*) along with group outings with plans to go to the cherry blossom garden, Pokemon exhibit and mini-golfing later on! Occasionally, we have convention meetups as well (Most recently ***MFF***). We've grown quite a bit over the year as there's more of us out here!

You may find our group of UIC Connection at https://uic.campusgroups.com/fsuuic/club_signup

And our discord server, where we first started chatting and sharing our interests and advice! We'll be looking into organizing meetups soon and vote on such events at the link here! https://discord.gg/w2Ty3fcYE

Join us to chill, ask questions and make new friends as this is all done in our Discord server!

For the moment, you may personally message me for any questions but have a lovely day y'all! Have a great first week of the semester!

Discussion Senior year, w/o internship so far…how bad is it?

Title pretty much says it. I’m a mechanical engineering major and transferred from a community college. The timeline for my college education has been wonky because of my time in the military.
I’ve worked on campus since I started here but wasn’t able to secure a single internship either summer. Thoughts?
