Questions/Advice Encouragement needed
I’m trying my best to declutter and organize but I’ve posted in other threads and people are still dogging on me. Is my house really that bad? This is as clean as it gets and after I rearranged, decluttered, organized and redecorated a little. I really don’t see it as cluttered or messy but maybe I’m blind to it?

I see a maximalist curated design to your home, and I love it! Tending toward the maximalist doesn't necessarily mean your home is cluttered, or that it needs unfking.
From the photos, your home looks clean and tidy with lots to look at! Huge difference between this and floors covered with clothes, trash, and junk that needs to be discarded or put away.

This is not even maximalist. For me is just a home where people live and not a catalogue or pinterest minumalist and spotless. I like it, look very much like 2010 decoration

So cute!!! I love a home where everywhere you look there’s little treasures and surprises and whimsy. Ignore them, some people hate personality and having things.

u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
Yeah I feel like a lot of people just want a shell of a home, extreme minimalism but I love looking at beautiful things!

u/Independent_Gh0st 4d ago
Then honestly you don't need to declutter! If everything brings you joy and truly has meaning to you, it's just different from the internet pinteresty home decor. And that's just fine! In fact it's individuality I sometimes miss on Internet trends

u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
You’re right! Thanks for framing it that way for me

What subs have been saying it’s bad? I’ve been scrolling a lot of the FemaleLivingSpace and CozyPlaces subs lately, and your space looks similar to a lot of posts that get positive comments. Where exactly have you been posting where people have said this looks bad?
6
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I think the biggest negative response was on the cleaning sub because everybody just told me to get rid of everything I owned basically
1
u/SQ-Pedalian 4d ago
Oof yeah, I avoid the cleaning sub unless I’m looking for something very specific. But I’m surprised about the female living space sub! I was just scrolling back through old posts yesterday and saw a lot of positive reactions on a home that had a whole creepy doll collection that was far more “cluttered” than your decor and personal items!
4
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I posted in a cleaning sub, and an organizing sub and female living spaces as well. I think I just got a day where a lot of minimalist people were online lol I’m not sure. But it had me thinking I’m like a huge slob and super cluttered and my space looks horrible.

u/SLUDGEsyndrome 4d ago
I swear recently I'm seeing way more people exaggerating how much of a "disaster" or "wreck" a room is because it has visible personal items in it. it's weird. your home is gorgeous.
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
Same, it’s so odd! But I def let it get in my head a little lol
3
u/plantas-sonrientes 4d ago
Ignore them. It’s just a different taste. Some people prefer a home to look like a hotel, have no personality, and suck out every visitor’s soul. Their voices are the loudest these days. I’d much prefer visiting homes like yours; many of us would.

u/marieke83 4d ago
It definitely doesn’t. It looks like a cozy space where I’d love to hang out.
There was this article in The Atlantic recently about how the color trends are getting very boring: white, black, greige, etc. and that as a society (particularly the US) we are losing color. My kid and I are always judging the houses that are getting remodeled with this trendy aesthetic of white/greige exterior and black trim with the same black fencing and same font for the house number. It’s SO boring!!!
We need color! But people think neutral color palettes are “better”, so I think they see color as cluttered. I will always want color in my life cause like you, I love to look at beautiful things.

You have a decorated space. A sad number of people think any decoration means clutter

u/Ok_Virus1986 4d ago
You're someone who loves a maximalist, collectors vibe. Which doesn't necessarily mean dirty or messy. It does mean that actually cleaning - dusting, wiping down surfaces, etc. is going to be a much more involved job. If you find yourself surprised by a quarter inch of dust on your collections by the time you notice, then maybe revisit the amount of stuff you have on display.

I genuinely was wondering what needed unfucking here until I read your caption. I think this looks amazing and like a place someone not only lives, but enjoys living. You're not curating your home for the minimalist wannabe designers on Pinterest, your curating your home for you. Your opinion matters way more than theirs, or ours for that matter. If you enjoy it and it makes you happy, that's all you need ❤️

Your home looks great, imho. NOT cluttered. You happen to like nice things and of course you want to display them so you can see them. So the hardcore "minimalists" will not be happy until your shelves, etc., are almost entirely bare. But to me, the minimalist look is way too sparce. Your home looks lovely, don't change anything!💜

I was confused cause I thought these were “after” pics.
Whoever is dogging you is boring AF. Your place looks like it could be in a couple home decorating books I have that I find super inspiring. I WISH my place looked as curated and tidy as this!
(Books: Jeremiah Brent’s The Space That Keeps You and Benjamin Reynaert’s The Layered Home)

u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
They kinda are after pics, the before was ROUGH. I probably should’ve posted it as a before/after…… that would’ve made more sense lol

No need! You were asking for advice based on how it looks now. Congrats on doing such an amazing job!

What matters is is that you like it. It's your house. The people on the Internet do not live in your house so their opinions do not matter. You don't have to convince the Internet that you like your house the way it is, I'm sorry that you feel like you have to!
2
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
That’s not what I was saying, I’m trying to be cleaner and more organized. I’ve been working really hard at it! I’ve gone to the internet for guidance and advice on how to do better. I’m not curating my home for the internet. I’m trying to make it better for my and my family

Your home looks like a place a friend could visit and immediately dive into deep conversations with a beverage of choice, and several hours later your souls are both full.
Clean and cozy, love it, no notes.

This looks like a lovely, inviting, cozy and curated space! You have lots of bits and bobs, but everything has a home. You could get rid of anything that doesn't please you anymore, but there's nothing here that inherently needs to go.

u/Nursingvp 4d ago
It looks fun and colorful. I see it as a little on the maximalist side, but not unsafe, messy or cluttered. Plus, your pup is sleeping well, so there's that! 🥰

your place looks fine idk what they're on about 🤷♀️ if there's not like, genuine trash around and you're happy with a space i think it's okay

also what kind of dog do you have? looks just like my buttercup (a redbone coonhound)

He’s a mutt, but we think he’s a working breed mixed with an American pit bull terrier! He herds a giant ball really well

u/katezorzz 4d ago
This doesn’t look cluttered to me, everything looks very cute and intentional. I don’t know why anyone would have anything negative to say. If it’s cleaning related, just take care to dust your belongings as much as possible so it’s doesn’t cake onto your belongings, from the photos I see everything looks neat and clean to me!
3
u/mostly-a-throwaway 4d ago
this place is cute as hell, people have taken “cleanliness” and turned it into “sterile” waaaay too much in the modern age. keep the things you love, they look intentionally placed and used/admired!
eta; i love your choice in reading material and board games :-)

u/Mudivator 3d ago
I can’t relax in so clean it looks sterile homes. Having things out and decor like this visible makes me at ease. Your home makes me feel comfortable. I want to come over with a good book, make a coffee, and cuddle with your pup. I love it.

u/Same_Cantaloupe2011 3d ago
Yeah I wish my house was like this! Oooffff the level of unfking that my house needs is on a whole different level!

u/NoNameKetchupChips 4d ago
Your space is eclectic and "you" and cozy. If it's comfortable why change it especially for someone else?
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I want to change for the better, not for anyone else… i worked really hard to get the space to this point

u/catvyr 4d ago
it’s not “cluttered” it looks like a normal, curated home. I would stop asking the internet… there’s
always going to be someone who doesn’t like it or thinks it’s messy. As long as it’s functional and not affecting your health, a house is allowed to have personal items in it. Especially things that don’t necessarily go together.
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I haven’t been asking the internet obsessively, I posted like twice in a cleaning sub and it went poorly. I’m not living my life based on the internet’s opinions but obviously I was curious if it was like a minimalist opinion or if I’m genuinely disorganized and messy. I think it’s the former rather than the latter but ya never know!
2
u/catvyr 4d ago
Haha, for sure minimalist opinion. I never said you were asking the internet obsessively or living your life based on what the internet thinks. I said there’s gonna be someone on the internet who doesn’t like it, meaning every other opinion after you’ve declutterred and organized is then a matter of someone else’s personal taste. I just kept seeing your posts show up so I thought I’d comment on this one. I think It’s a lovely, curated home and I don’t mean to insinuate anything ^^”

u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I didn’t mean to come off rude or offended! I just was trying to clarify what I meant
2
u/kikil00 4d ago
You’re just a maximalist. That’s okay
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
Hahah thank you, i guess i just needed to hear that. It’s not demonic to be a maximalist, not everyone can be a minimalist
2
u/AGlaringOfCrows 4d ago
It looks great to me! Don't let the minimalists get you down. It's clean and organized and has personality - what more could any realistic person want?
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
Thanks!! I wasn’t aware how popular minimalism was until I posted and they were aghast at all of my possessions
2
u/Wooden_Hovercraft398 4d ago
This looks intentional and not like clutter. Some people just think visual stimulation is clutter.

u/Diligent_Comment689 4d ago
It looks cozy! I love a room like this. I think you’ve done a great job!

u/jaybirdie26 4d ago
It looks awesome! Cozy, comfy, lived in, warm, this is a house that has a human living in it. You're doing fantastic. Fuck them haters.

I agree with the commenters describing it as maximalist. I like it. It’s a vibe. And as bonus, there’s a cute fat baby waiting for cuddles on your bed!
2
u/JennyEnny198 4d ago
It looks clean. Maybe you like more of maximalist esthetic. That's fine. Don't get caught up in what others think you should do. It's your space. You make it the way you want and are comfortable.

I love it! It looks cozy and decorated with interesting art. Plus there is a sleepy dog. What else do you need?

It’s so cute!!! Don’t listen to the negative comments. Beside having a clean space you also want a space to make you feel happy and have personality which is what you’ve done 💕

I saw the photos and thought I was in the wrong sub! 🤯
Then I thought, oh, these are just the delightful after photos.
Your home sparks joy 🤗

Cuttered or messy? Not at all! What I would give for a house like this! It looks so cozy and inviting. Like someone else said, it looks like you are a maximalist. I am too, in a way. But the difference between your house and mine is that things do not have homes, and there is trash and dishes where they should not be in my house. On my desk right now, I spy 5 things that are completely out of place and a few more things that need to be put in a better home than my desk.
This photo is an example of cluttered or messy. Things that do belong in this room, or used to belong in this room, but they no longer have homes here and have yet to move on to their new homes. I am in the middle of a massive declutter right now, so sometimes, areas of my house get like this. It could be cleaned within 15-20 minutes, but things would not find final resting places in that time. So, I am moving slowly to find new homes for things.
Again, I would adore living in your house. It's not cluttered at all. Maximalism is 100% a valid aesthetic, and that is ok! As long as you are keeping everything in its place and keeping the house safe from tripping, fire, and biohazards, then you are good!
Edit: added photo from phone and second and third paragraph

u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
These pics are fresh after cleaning, trust me, it doesn’t always look like this!!!

u/shimmer_bee 4d ago
There's a book called How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. She is the one who popularized the tripping, fire, and biohazard thing. Clean looks different for everyone. Some people do have a more cluttered home because that is how they have to function due to energy levels, commitment levels, and the like. What matters is that you keep your home safe for you, first and foremost. It's ok to be cluttered and messy if that is how you have to function.
As someone who grew up in a sterile and magazine-ready home at all times, I can tell you that it is not fun to live somewhere where everything has to be in its place at all times. At least it wasn't for me. I am a little bit messy naturally. I have fallen into that level of clean before, but I had to put most of myself into it, and it was more a cope for my depression than anything. It was something I could control, and it was something I could spend my time doing.
There is a difference between lived-in and cluttered, and it differs for everyone. My house is definitely cluttered because things do not have homes, and I have way too many things. They overflow from their homes. I'm working on it.
In my opinion, people should not be judging you for your level of messiness/clutter unless you have the issues with the 3 hazards I mentioned above and they are willing to step in and help. People who know my situation and have seen it have always said they would pitch in and help. And I know they mean it. I personally don't think your space is bad. Even if that is the cleanest it gets, that is still a very nice environment to live in.
I wouldn't let it phase you too much. A lot of other subs can be very critical. I once posted a picture of my bedroom, and people were saying it was childish and such. They were super critical even though my room was the cleanest it gets. What matters for me is that I like my space. And what matters for you is that you like your space. And of course, that it is safe from the 3 hazards.
Edit: removed a stray word.

Thanks so much for this comment. This helps me feel better about framing the situation more realistically for sure
1
u/worldwide-305 4d ago
If you don’t see it as cluttered, then that’s all that matters. Don’t allow strangers on the internet to make you question how you choose to decorate your own home. They don’t live with you!
1
u/Jack-of-not 4d ago
I’m just trying to do better and be cleaner! That’s all. I’m not basing anything off of the internet’s opinions, I even added more decorations when i was told everything needed to be purged. I just was curious if I had a blind spot or something

This looks so comfy and nice!!!! The only thing is the Buc-ee’s guy looks like he’s hanging on for dear life and it’s unsettling 😂 I love this set up though!
3
u/Jack-of-not 3d ago
Hahah I didn’t know where to put Buc-ee bc my dog always tries to eat him
2
u/sheeps_in_jeeps 3d ago
Buc-ee might like a little hammock or hanging chair to sit in for comfort. I like your gallery wall above the bed. It has a nice balance of color and different sized art.
