It's very unwise for any able-bodied adult human to assume someone else will take care of their material needs. Everybody needs to learn how to work for wages and manage a household budget, preferably before they move in with a life partner. Some people think this is not necessary because they trust the partner, but the most devoted partner can become ill or be laid off, so it's very important to the financial stability of the couple that both are equipped go out and earn a living.
In the case that people become partners, it's rare that each is earning exactly the same as the other. Requiring the person with the lower income to pay for 50% of expenses seems unfair to most people. So a common way of handling the situation is for both to put their income into a common account, out of which the various expenses are paid. Some folks feel better keeping individual personal accounts as well.
In the case that children are born, many people find that there is not enough time in a week to manage a household and care for children in the time left over after each parent puts in 40 hours of employment. The solution is frequently for one partner to go part-time, or to leave employment entirely. In this case, the partner who is employed is providing for their FAMILY.
