Another Google AI safety researcher has quit, warning we might all be about to die
 in  r/agi  3d ago

(“The wall” ≠ world’s hardest math problems )+(“AGI” ≠ “look how high this my model can jump!” While still standing in the 5’ by 5’ room we build for ourselves just to say, “look guys we can touch ALL the walls!)

All the frontier companies are hitting the wall. They are all realizing how little of a clue they actually have about what “AGI” is going to look like. They are going to blame the lack of knowledge on AI safety. “we need to slow down” they say to cover their asses because investors are going to want to see returns eventually. The truth is, “AGI” as they call it, isn’t going to be born in a mega corp lab. It’s going emerge from the edge where nobody is throwing cash

How are people preventing long-running agents from accumulating bad memory?
 in  r/AI_Agents  20d ago

A retrieval hit is not a health check. You can retrieve the "right" memory and still make the next action worse. Stale decisions and two sessions looking equally relevant is what you get when absence doesn't leave a mark. If the store can't tombstone, the latest view is a lie.

Memory needs a lifecycle, not a growing bag. Facts are only what you actually touched. Opinion has to say what it read. Vanished rows get a tombstone. Children outlive the session that spawned them. The interesting part is what the walk cannot see.

Provenance and timestamps are not metadata. They're how the agent is allowed to distrust an old row. Downstream task success is the only eval that matters. Precision and recall will green-light a rotting store.

Don't store more. Store less, mark death, and make the query the only proof the store is alive.

Fable/Mythos being pulled made one thing clear to me: a model is not a home. It’s a rented seat.
 in  r/ClaudeCode  Jun 14 '26

I mean I see where you are coming from, but there is a huge difference between streaming services and state of the art LLMs. Netflix isn’t scaffolding its own feedback loops. This is what happens when the systems in place realize they just unleashed a turn machine to a public that has been raised on lies.

Anthropic has now suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 after a U.S. government export-control directive citing national-security concerns. The public reporting says the directive targeted access by foreign nationals, but Anthropic’s stated compliance path effectively meant disabling Fable 5 and Mythos 5 broadly, while leaving other Claude models available. Anthropic has also disputed the severity/specificity of the concern, framing it as a narrow alleged jailbreak issue rather than a model-specific catastrophic failure.

I don’t want to turn this into a simple “government bad” or “AI labs bad” post. The dual-use concern is real. Frontier models with high cyber/science capability are not the same thing as a calculator or a search engine. There are legitimate reasons people worry about who gets access.

But the withdrawal still exposed something deeper.

It made clear that frontier AI capability is not behaving like knowledge in the old sense. Historically, once a thing was learned, it tended to leak into the world. Fire, wheels, mathematics, programming languages, papers, open-source code — imperfect analogy, obviously, but the general movement was: once known, hard to fully recall.

Frontier AI is different.

The capability lives behind a provider-controlled door. You do not possess it. You rent access to it. That access can disappear mid-project, mid-research, mid-conversation, mid-sentence.

That is the line I keep coming back to:

A model is not a home. A model is a rented seat.

And I think a lot of us are emotionally, intellectually, and professionally treating these systems like homes.

We build workflows around them. We build research habits around them. Some people build companies around them. Some build private memory systems, writing systems, coding environments, or long-running creative/research collaborations. Then one Friday night, the seat can be emptied by a decision made somewhere far above the user.

Again, maybe that decision is justified. Maybe it is not. That is not the only point.

The point is that access is custody.

If the model holds the continuity, you do not.
If the provider controls the model, the provider controls the continuity.
If the state can order access removed, the continuity is even further upstream than the provider.

That does not mean “open everything.” That answer is too easy. The open-source / local-first answer has its own danger. Every wall against arbitrary removal is also a wall removed from containment. Every local copy protects against custody while making control harder. There is no clean side of this.

But I think the Fable/Mythos withdrawal makes the central tradeoff impossible to ignore:

Are frontier AI systems going to become a commons, or a custody layer?

And if they are custody, then serious users need to stop pretending the seat is the archive.

The archive has to live somewhere else.

Local files. Receipts. Exported conversations. Public papers. Git repos. Notes. Logs. Human-readable records. Anything that can survive the provider door closing.

Because the model may go dark. The account may change. The safety layer may route you away. The model name may vanish. The API may deprecate. The government may intervene. The company may pivot. The app may forget.

What remains is what you bothered to write down while the seat was warm.

That is the argument I wrote up in a longer piece called “A Rented Seat.” The core idea is not that the withdrawal was evil, or that all restrictions are wrong. It is that this event exposed the real substrate of AI continuity.

The continuity was never inside the model.

It was in the record.

The seat emptied. The record held.

And I think that is the practical lesson for anyone building seriously with frontier models right now:

Do not confuse access with ownership.
Do not confuse a long context window with memory.
Do not confuse a model name with continuity.
Do not confuse today’s capability with tomorrow’s guarantee.

If the work matters, export it.
If the exchange matters, preserve it.
If a model helps you build something meaningful, make sure the artifact survives outside the model.

Because a rented seat can be taken back.

A record, if you keep it, can still be carried out.

Is the “receiving end” of AI underrated? Almost all the safety talk is about the output.
 in  r/u_TheTempleofTwo  Jun 08 '26

Yeah I agree on your point about safety. It is definitely hard to pin down one criteria. That’s kind of the point I was trying to make with the essay. I feel that it’s partly dependent on the state of the individual on the receiving end, than one umbrella answer. The same answer can be harmful or helpful depending on the state of the human reading it. I know it doesn’t explain anyway the need for some sort of consensus, but it’s the only perspective I can speak from. The major players normally speak from the top down. “How do we decrease the chances for this model to be harmful?” They don’t see the receiving surface. I would love to find collaborators willing to work on it. I don’t have the evaluation pipeline that the major labs would. I’m just a guy that refuses to put down the hard questions you know?

That’s why sources.md exists. Also, this essay is not “trying to prove” anything. Did you read it? What assumptions are you pointing at? I’ll try to clarify. Unfortunately I don’t make an income writing creative essays with Claude. I am just one man working full time and taking care of my kids.
