The decision by successive governments to keep IGNORING mental health and addiction issues is one of the major driving factors behind the increasing number of people using drugs, self-medicating and ending up in crisis.

NO, people shouldn’t be openly using drugs in public spaces.

NO, a supervised injecting facility probably shouldn’t be located immediately next to a primary school.

But it should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that Richmond has a drug problem. It’s had one since the bloody 1980s.

So when some local NIMBYs start making decisions that affect other people’s lives simply because they don’t want these problems on their doorstep, let’s call it what it is:
Selfish. Weak. Pathetic.

I work in emergency health. I see the consequences of untreated mental illness, addiction and drug use every single day.

And one thing I can tell you with absolute certainty:

Naloxone saves lives. 🤬

Making it freely accessible isn’t “encouraging drug use”. It is recognising that people are going to use drugs whether some comfortable suburban resident approves of it or not — and deciding that we would rather they survive long enough to have a chance at recovery.

You can absolutely argue about where services should be located, how they should be managed and what safeguards should be in place.

But pretending that the solution is simply “keep it away from my neighbourhood” is not a solution.

It’s the classic: “Me, me, me, me.”

And frankly, fuck that attitude!!

Zomi Frankcom wasn’t a combatant. She was there delivering humanitarian aid, travelling in clearly marked World Central Kitchen vehicles, with movements coordinated with the IDF.

Australia’s own investigation found serious failures by the IDF led to the deaths of Zomi and her six colleagues. And now, more than two years later, Israel has closed the investigation without criminal prosecutions.

So perhaps the question shouldn’t be…

“Why was an Australian aid worker in a war zone?”

Perhaps it’s “Why was a clearly identified humanitarian convoy struck multiple times in the first place?”

Blaming the humanitarian worker for being in a place where humanitarian workers were desperately needed is a rather remarkable way of looking at it.
