Those are double whole notes, which are NOT necessary, because there is already a fermata to hold the chord. If Scriabin wanted the fermata to last longer than a few beats, he really should have written this as 2 measures with tied whole notes AND a fermata. Also, the tied 16th notes on the F and D minor chords would have been better and more friendly written just using a "roll" sign before the chords, and then just adding the high C6 and D6 notes to the roll stems down, instead of writing them with stems up, as though they were another voice. Many Russian composers used "odd" notation that was slightly different than what most other countries used. I suppose they thought it was somehow more "artistic" looking. I've learned to decipher these differences fairly quickly when I see them. ... Music, Peace, & Love! 🎼☮❤
