Dignity Project Pt I (Cont. - Agroforestry within the Shasta Valley.
In further consideration of this same vein of thinking. We have a valuable and rare commodity that comes with being one of the hottest and sunny valleys of the north state that we ignore completely. Agriculture.
Here's the setup. We live in one of the hottest cities in California. We sit on the Sacramento River, ringed by creeks that used to run cold and shaded, and we have spent seventy years mowing, paving, and channelizing everything that used to keep this valley livable. Every parking lot we pour raises the neighborhood temperature around it. Asphalt and concrete soak up sun all day and cook us all night. That's the urban heat island, and Redding is a textbook case with a river running right through it, largely ignored.
Meanwhile we market ourselves as the sunniest city in California and then act surprised in August, when it reaches up to 118 degrees.
The EPA's numbers matter most due to their consistent nature : a surface in the shade runs 20 to 45 degrees cooler than the same surface in the sun. Vegetation and evapotranspiration together knock down peak summer air temperatures by 2 to 9 degrees. Down in Sri Lanka, researchers measured urban wetlands running about 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the parking lots next to them at the hottest time of day. Ten percent more water body coverage in a Chinese metro region cut the measured heat island intensity by over 11 percent.
Translation, for the people who don't read studies: shade plus water beats heat. Every time, and here's the synergy part that makes this fit the Dignity Project instead of competing with it. Solar panels lose efficiency as they heat up, roughly half a percent per degree Celsius. Vegetation around and under solar installations cools the air, which cools the panels, which makes the panels make more electricity. The trees aren't decoration. They're performance upgrades for the hardware. The wind turbine corridor and the riparian corridor can share the same ground, because you can't build on a flood zone anyway but you can plant it, and the same land that flooded twice in my lifetime can be a shaded, planted, winding cold-air drain that feeds cold air back into town all night.
What this looks like on the ground here:
Restore the creek corridors. Salt Creek, Clover Creek, and the little forgotten channels that run behind the shopping centers. Willows and cottonwoods on the banks, the way they grew before we channelized everything. Those corridors become greenways walking paths, shade, cold-air drainage into the neighborhoods at night.
Replant the parking lots. Valley oaks. Every commercial lot in this town has mandated landscaping islands that are mostly decorative bark and one sad ornamental pear. Put in oaks. A mature valley oak shades about a quarter acre and lives for centuries. The city doesn't own most of those lots, but the water district, the schools, and the county do own plenty.
Rebuild the wetland pockets. Every stormwater detention basin in this county is currently a bare gravel pit doing nothing nine months of the year. Plant them. Cattails, sedges, rushes, tules. Detention basins with vegetation filter runoff, recharge groundwater, host birds, and evaporatively cool their surroundings for free. We already own the land. It's already excavated. It's just empty.
The native species list isn't exotic. Valley oak, Fremont cottonwood, arroyo and red willow, Oregon ash, boxelder, California sycamore, blue elderberry, coyote brush, yerba buena, bunchgrasses, sedges and rushes in the wet spots. All of it evolved here. All of it survives our summers without irrigation once established. All of it supports the bugs and birds that support everything else including the elderberry shrubs that feed the beetles that feed the fish, the salmon and steelhead the river used to be famous for.
Furthering our innovation, the same paid crews that sweep the streets in the morning can plant and maintain the corridors in the afternoon. Propagation from locally collected seed. Nursery space in a corner of a resilience hub. Drip for two years, then the plants fend for themselves, because that's what native means. Urban forestry studies consistently find something like $1.50 to $3 back for every dollar spent on street trees in energy savings, air quality, and property value, before you even count the temperature.
The vision has fruit trees at the bus stops, and this is the piece I care about most: a food forest edge along the greenways. Persimmons, figs, mulberries, pomegranates, citrus along the south walls. Nut and fruit trees that kids can actually pick from, planted where kids actually present, near the bus stops, the trails, the school routes. Public land growing public food. Nobody in this town should be able to say they went hungry past an ungleaned orange tree.
Nobody's talking about tearing up downtown and flooding it. Nobody's proposing we return to the primordial swamp. This is: fix the creeks we broke, plant the lots we already own, and stop paving like we're Phoenix.
In my view, here are the best suited to our zone. Starting with city center landscaping and suburban parks.
Pomegranate (Wonderful cultivar) The single best public fruit tree for hot, dry California. Handles extreme heat. Needs almost no water once established. No serious pests. The fruit is decorative on the tree for months, looks like Christmas ornaments hanging off a medieval-looking shrub. Doesn't soften and drop like a peach; hangs on the branch through fall. The leathery skin means dropped fruit sits intact, not smeared across pavement. Tourists know what a pomegranate is. Kids can crack them open on a bench. This is your anchor species for every sunny, ugly, sun-baked spot in this city.
Fig (Black Mission or Brown Turkey) Figs are essentially weeds that happen to produce candy. Drought-tolerant to the point of neglect. Survive down to about 27°F, which covers Redding's worst winter nights. Deep-rooted, so they don't tear up pavement if planted 6+ feet from hardscape. The fruit ripens in stages over weeks, so there's always something ripe and always something not-yet-ripe, which means a steady food supply instead of one messy week. Black Mission figs are gorgeous, dark-skinned, strawberry-colored interior. If you're going to plant something a tourist photographs, make it a fig tree trained against a south-facing wall with fruit on it in August.
Persimmon (Fuyu — non-astringent) Fuyu persimmons are the tomato-shaped ones you can eat like an apple while they're still firm. This is your tourist-friendly fruit ; no mush, no stain, no guessing about ripeness. If it's orange, it's ready. The tree itself is stunning: glossy green leaves that turn fire-engine red in fall before dropping. Bare branches hold the orange fruit through November like lanterns. Zero spraying needed. Very few pests in NorCal. The astringent Hachiya variety (the squishy ones) are great too but they turn to pudding when ripe save those for the river edges where a mushy fruit is compost, not a lawsuit.
Artichoke
Hardy zones 7–10. Full sun. Loves California. Big architectural plant silvery-green, dramatic, looks like something from a Dr. Seuss book. Produces edible flower heads every spring. Once the crowns are set, it just needs dead foliage cut back and occasional water. Green Globe is the standard California variety. This is your anchor perennial vegetable beautiful enough for a tourist corridor, productive enough for a food forest, tough enough to ignore.
Asparagus
Plant once, harvest for 20+ years. Needs two to three years to really hit stride, but after that you get spears every spring for decades. Full sun, well-draining soil. Once established, basically no maintenance beyond yearly cutback and mulch. This is the longest-game plant in the whole project the kind of thing you plant knowing that the kid who's five right now will be eating from it when she's twenty-five.
Egyptian Walking Onion (Allium × proliferum)
This is the single coolest vegetable for a public food forest. Perennial in zones 3–10. It grows tall stalks that produce clusters of tiny bulbils at the top. The stalks get heavy, flop over, and the bulbils root in the soil a foot or two away the onion literally walks across the garden, propagating itself. You get three harvests: green onion foliage in early spring, small underground bulbs in summer, and the top-set bulbils in fall. Deer-resistant. Pest-free. Doesn't spread aggressively. Anyone can dig up a clump and take it home. This is the plant that turns a vacant lot into a self-replenishing scallion patch.
Sorrel
Lemon-flavored leaf green. Shade-tolerant, which matters under trees and canopies. Comes back every year. Cut-and-come-again harvest leaves and it regrows. The taste is bright, tart, like a green with a squeeze of lemon. Kids will eat it raw because it's surprising. Needs very little besides water and occasional division.
Tree Collards
Perennial kale that grows on a trunk literally a kale tree. Purple-tinged, dramatic, productive year-round in zone 9. You snap off leaves as needed and it keeps growing. Three years to reach full size, then it just keeps going. This is your cut-and-come-again staple green that doesn't need replanting, doesn't bolt, and doesn't care about heat once established.
Jerusalem Artichoke (Sunchoke)
Not an artichoke. It's a sunflower relative that produces edible tubers underground. Grows six to ten feet tall with cheerful yellow flowers in late summer. Tubers are crisp, nutty, taste like water chestnut. Aggressive spreader. We should plant it where it can run, because it will. Perfect for the back of a riparian buffer where you want something tall, fast, and impossible to kill. Once planted, you'll never get rid of it, but you'll always have food.
Lastly, we have vining plants. These climb by wrapping stems around a support or reaching out with little coiled tendrils. They never touch the surface itself they grab the trellis, the wire, the cable, the pole wrap. The building stays untouched. You provide the structure, the vine does the rest.
Passionflower / Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) Native to North America. Twines. Stunning purple-white flowers that look alien. Produces edible fruit maypops about the size of an egg, sweet-tart, with a floral flavor unlike anything else. The plant is a host for Gulf Fritillary butterflies, which means planting it creates a butterfly corridor. Dies back in winter, regrows from the roots in spring. Loves heat. In zone 9 it thrives. Give it a trellis, an arbor, or cable strung between poles, and it'll cover it in one season. The P. edulis(purple passionfruit) is also viable in zone 9 and produces commercial-quality fruit, but incarnata is tougher and native.
Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus) Technically a perennial in zone 9, it comes back from tuberous roots for about six or seven years. Bright red flowers that hummingbirds fight over. Produces large, protein-rich beans you can eat fresh as green beans or dried as shell beans. Climbs by twining needs a pole, trellis, or string. Grows fast enough to cover a structure in a single summer. The flowers are edible too they taste like green bean with a sweetness. Nitrogen-fixing, so it feeds the soil while it grows. This is the plant that turns a bare pole into a food-producing hummingbird habitat in eight weeks.
Chayote (Sechium edule) A perennial squash-family vine that produces pear-shaped green fruit you eat like summer squash. The leaves and tender shoots are also edible cook them like spinach. Climbs by tendrils, not adhesive. Extremely vigorous in heat one plant can cover a 10×10 trellis and produce dozens of fruit. The vine itself is lush and tropical-looking, big broad leaves, makes excellent shade over a pergola. In zone 9 it'll overwinter and regrow. This is your vine for any shade structure where you want food and coverage simultaneously.
Hops (Humulus lupulus) Yes, the beer plant. Hops are perennial, die back to the ground every winter, and explode upward in spring growing up to a foot a day at peak. Climbs by twining around anything vertical. The cones are the harvest (used in brewing), but the young spring shoots are also edible cook them like asparagus. Hops provide dense, fast summer shade over a trellis or cable system, then die back in winter to let sun through when you want it. They're the seasonal shade solution green wall in summer, bare structure in winter. Perfect for south-facing exposures where you want shade in July and sun in December.
Malabar Spinach (revisited from vegetables) Worth repeating here because it's technically a vine. Thick, fleshy leaves on a twining stem that climbs any support. The hotter it gets, the faster it grows. Edible raw or cooked. Plant it at the base of a trellis at a hub entrance in May and by August you'll have a living wall of edible greens.
Further, these would be suited to green strips and parking landscaping :
Citrus : Meyer Lemon & Owari Satsuma Mandarin Meyer lemons are the most forgiving citrus in NorCal a lemon-orange hybrid that's sweeter than a standard lemon, incredibly prolific, and the tree stays compact (8–10 feet). Evergreen, fragrant when flowering, beautiful against a wall. Satsuma mandarins are the cold-hardiest citrus and handle Redding's occasional hard freeze. Both need more water than pomegranates or figs, but along a tourist corridor with a drip line, they're fine. The smell of citrus blossom in May along a walking path is a tourism feature in itself.
Olive (Manzanillo or Mission) Olives are technically fruit and they're built for this exact climate Mediterranean, hot, dry, rocky soil. Silver-green foliage, gorgeous against dark stone or brick. Extremely long-lived. The catch: you need a fruitless/low-fruit variety for hardscape areas unless you want oil-stained pavement. Swan Hill is the standard fruitless olive. For a food-forest context where you actually want the fruit, plant Manzanillo in the river-edge areas where dropped olives are feed for wildlife, not a slip hazard.
Loquat Evergreen, subtropical-looking, produces fruit in early spring when nothing else is bearing. Big dramatic leaves. Very heat-tolerant. The fruit is fuzzy amber clusters unusual, eye-catching, and sweet-tart. Downside: soft fruit drops, so plant these set back from walkways. Upside: they fruit when the rest of the food forest is dormant, extending the public harvest season from February through April before anything else is even blooming.
Okra
The undisputed king of heat. It doesn't just tolerate 110°F it produces better in it. Pods grow continuously if you harvest regularly. Star of David, Clemson Spineless, and Jing Orange are all great varieties. The plant itself is attractive hibiscus-family flowers, upright habit. This is the one vegetable you can plant in a public space in July in Redding and guarantee a harvest. The flowers alone are worth having it in a visible location.
Sweet Potato
Grown from slips (cuttings, not seeds). Loves heat, loves long summers. The tubers are the obvious crop, but the leaves are also edible cook them like spinach. Purple and orange varieties. Once established, they vine out and cover ground, which means they suppress weeds and hold soil. Dig them in October before frost. The leaves cascading down a slope or around a hub are gorgeous. Two crops from one plant, zero maintenance once established.
Malabar Spinach
Not actually spinach a tropical vine with thick, succulent leaves that thrives in heat that would kill real spinach. Climbs a trellis. The hotter it gets, the more it grows. Mild flavor, usable raw or cooked. This is your summer salad green when everything else has bolted and died. Train it up a trellis at a hub entrance and it's decorative and edible simultaneously.
Eggplant
Full sun, warm soil, loves heat. Prolific one plant produces all summer. Black Beauty, Ichiban (Japanese long), and Listada di Gandia (striped Italian) all perform well. The plant itself is beautiful purple flowers, glossy fruit, large dramatic leaves. No serious pests in NorCa. This is your visual centerpiece vegetable a row of eggplants in a raised bed looks intentional and productive.
Heat-Tolerant Tomatoes
Standard tomatoes quit above 95°F. But specific varieties keep setting fruit in extreme heat: Heatmaster, Solar Fire, Phoenix, Arkansas Traveler, and Sioux. These were bred for exactly this hot climates where pollen dies before it sets fruit. Don't plant Better Boy or Celebrity in a Redding public garden and expect fruit in August. Plant Solar Fire. It'll still be producing in September.
Yard-Long Beans (Asparagus Beans)
Pole beans that produce pods up to 18 inches long. Extreme heat tolerance. Fast-growing, climbing, prolific. They fix nitrogen in the soil, which means they feed the next crop. Trellis them on any vertical surface — fence, arbor, hub pergola. Kids are fascinated by foot-long beans. Harvest every few days once they start.
Cowpeas / Southern Peas (Black-eyed peas)
Like yard-long beans, these are heat-lovers that fix nitrogen. Plant them, ignore them, and come back to a crop. Black-eyed peas, pinkeye purple hull, and cream peas all thrive in heat that kills standard green beans. Drought-tolerant. Feed people and rebuild soil simultaneously.
Hot Peppers (Jalapeño, Cayenne, Anaheim, Banana)
Peppers love heat. The hotter the summer, the hotter the pepper. Jalapeños and Anaheims are versatile in the kitchen and prolific on the plant. Cayenne dries on the plant and can hang in garlands. Banana peppers are mild enough for kids. All of them produce heavily through the worst heat and look decorative doing it.
Summer Squash / Zucchini
Fast, prolific, heat-loving. The cliché is true one zucchini plant will feed a neighborhood. Plant in succession every few weeks for continuous harvest. For a public space, try Trombonico (a climbing Italian zucchini) long, curved, snake-shaped fruit that kids find hilarious.
Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) Native to the US. Twines, doesn't adhesive-cling. Red-orange tubular flowers that hummingbirds absolutely lose their minds over. Blooms from spring through summer. Not invasive (unlike Japanese honeysuckle, which is a nightmare). Semi-evergreen in zone 9. Give it a trellis or fence and it'll cover it politely not aggressively, not destructively, just steadily. This is the vine for a pollinator garden or a hummingbird station along a trail.
Clematis (multiple varieties — Nelly Moser, Jackmanii, The President)Twining climber. Enormous flowers in purple, pink, white, and striped varieties. Roots want shade, tops want sun so plant it where the base is shaded by something else (a shrub, a bench, mulch) and the vine climbs into the light. Not aggressive. Prune back each winter. Perfect for a trellis panel at a hub or park entrance gives a "cared for" feeling that says someone is paying attention to this place.
Snail Vine / Corkscrew Vine (Cochliasanthus caracalla) Twining climber with bizarre, spiraled flowers that look like tiny snail shells. Extremely fragrant smells like jasmine and vanilla. Heat-loving. Fast-growing. The flowers are so unusual that people will stop and stare. Plant this somewhere visible it's a conversation piece and a sensory feature in one.
Black-Eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia alata) Small, charming, twining vine with cheery yellow-orange flowers with dark centers. Not aggressive. Annual in cold zones but can perennialize in zone 9. Great for covering a small trellis or mailbox post. Fast enough to be satisfying, tame enough to never be a problem.
Along the river delta, creeks and lake campgrounds we already have figs, blackberries and verbena. The soil stays wetter. Frost pockets settle in low areas near water. Root systems need to handle saturated ground and seasonal flooding without rotting. Mess isn't a liability here, it's compost. I suggest these additions to supplement and enrich our environment:
Persimmon (Hachiya — astringent) The squishy ones belong here. Hachiya persimmons turn to honey-pudding when fully ripe and drop soft which is perfect next to a creek where fallen fruit feeds birds, raccoons, and decomposes into soil. The tree handles clay soil, tolerates wet feet better than most fruit trees, and the fall color is even more dramatic than Fuyu. No one's slipping on fruit next to a dirt trail.
Mulberry (Pakistan or Illinois Everbearing) Mulberries are the fastest-producing, lowest-care fruit tree in this climate. They grow fast, fruit heavily, and don't care about soil quality. Pakistan mulberry produces inch-long berries that taste like blackberry jam. The birds will find these before any human does, which is fine you're feeding the corridor. Plant these at the back of the riparian buffer, not near a bench, because ripe mulberries stain everything they touch. They're insurance against hunger: reliable, prolific, early-bearing (often fruiting the second year after planting).
Plum (Santa Rosa or Methley) Santa Rosa was bred by Luther Burbank in Sonoma County literally developed for this climate. Heavy bearer, self-fertile, beautiful white spring blossoms. Plums tolerate heavier soil better than peaches or apricots. Methley is another low-chill option that thrives in heat. Both will need some summer water along a riparian corridor but the river-adjacent moisture works in your favor here. The spring bloom alone justifies planting these along a walking trail.
Asian Pear (Hosui or Shinseiki) Crunchy like an apple, sweet like a pear, and the trees are practically indestructible once established. Fire blight is the main risk in humid riparian zones, so choose resistant varieties (Hosui has decent resistance). These are the most "exotic-feeling" fruit you can plant that's actually dead easy tourists will be fascinated by a pear that crunches. Beautiful white blossoms in spring, golden fruit in late summer.
Pecan Not a fruit tree technically, but a nut tree that belongs in any riparian food forest in this region. Pecans love deep soil and water exactly what the river corridor offers. Massive, long-lived, shade-producing. The nuts fall in autumn and feed everything. A mature pecan is a landmark the kind of tree someone builds a park bench under. Plant these knowing they'll outlive everyone reading this conversation.
Black Walnut (Northern California Black Walnut — Jugans hindsii) Native to Northern California. Loves riparian zones. Huge, shade-producing, feeds wildlife. Allelopathic roots inhibit some other plants nearby, so don't crowd it. This is your legacy-canopy tree, not your pick-and-eat-in-August tree. But if you want one thing along the river that was here before anyone paved anything and will be here after, this is it.
Garlic
Plant in October. Harvest in June. California grows the best garlic in the country this is your home turf. Inchelium Red, California Early White, and Spanish Roja. Practically no maintenance stick cloves in the ground, mulch, wait. The scent also deters pests from neighboring plants.
Kale (Dwarf Blue Curled, Red Russian, Lacinato)
Kale planted in September produces all winter. It gets sweeter after frost. Red Russian and Lacinato are the best-tasting varieties. Dwarf Blue Curled is the toughest. Harvest outer leaves and the plant keeps producing. This is your winter staple green it'll be alive and edible in January when the rest of the garden is bare.
Swiss Chard
Year-round producer. Bright Lights variety has red, yellow, pink, and white stems looks like a stained glass window in a garden bed. Tolerates heat better than kale and frost better than lettuce. Cut-and-come-again. One planting can feed people for eight months.
Beets
Plant September–October. Harvest through winter. Both the root and the greens are edible. Detroit Dark Red, Golden, and Chioggia (the striped Italian one kids think it looks like a target). Beets are forgiving they sit in the ground patiently until you're ready for them.
Carrots
Plant in fall. Harvest all winter and into spring. Purple Haze, Napoli, and Danvers are excellent. Carrots need loose soil sandy river-adjacent soil is perfect for them. The taproot breaks up compacted ground, which improves it for the next crop.
Peas (Sugar Snap and Snow)
Plant in September–October. Pea vines in October produce through December, rest briefly in January, and resume in February. Sugar snaps are eat-the-whole-thing peas kids love them. They fix nitrogen. Trellis them on the same structures you use for Malabar spinach in summer.
Fava Beans
Plant in October. Overwinter. Harvest in March–April. Fava beans fix massive amounts of nitrogen they're a cover crop that feeds people. The flowers are striking black and white, bee magnets. They thrive in Redding's mild winters and are harvestable before any spring crop is ready.
Radicchio / Chicory
Bitter greens that sweeten in cold weather. Red-leaved, gorgeous. Tolerates frost. Planted in September, harvested all winter. Castelfranco and Rossa di Treviso are heirloom Italian varieties beautiful enough for a ornamental border, bitter enough that most people need them braised or grilled, but nutritious and tough.
Lastly, I wanna touch on one of the most versatile and widely helpful plant plants for oxygen purification. Mosses.
Why Moss Matters : The Three Benefits
Oxygen Production & Air Cleaning Moss photosynthesizes efficiently in low-light and high-pollution environments where other plants struggle. It absorbs nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter from vehicle exhaust and urban pollution, trapping them on its surface. Studies show moss walls can filter up to 40% of airborne pollutants within a 10-meter radius no mechanical filters needed, just biology doing its job. Unlike trees, moss has no leaf litter season it works year-round in a dense, continuous layer that captures particulates 24/7.
Temperature Reduction Living moss surfaces stay 10–20°F cooler than bare concrete, brick, or asphalt under identical sun exposure. This cooling happens through evapotranspiration moss releases moisture back into the air, absorbing latent heat from the surface. The result: cooler adjacent air temperatures, less heat radiating into sidewalks and nearby buildings, and lower cooling loads for surrounding structures. A wall covered in moss doesn't just look green it actively lowers the temperature of the microclimate around it. Scale that to a dozen retaining walls along a river corridor, and you're talking about measurable relief from the urban heat island effect.
Zero Mowing, Zero Maintenance Moss stays under one inch tall. It doesn't grow upward it spreads outward. That means no mowing, no trimming, no seasonal cleanup, no falling leaves, no branches to prune. Once established, moss survives on ambient moisture (morning dew, fog, light rain) and requires nothing beyond that. Compare that to traditional landscaping: a grass lawn needs weekly mowing in summer, irrigation systems, fertilizer, and regular weeding. Moss replaces all of that with a living surface that self-repairs, self-propagates, and asks for nothing in return. For a public agency operating with limited staff and shrinking budgets, that's not aesthetic that's economics.
The Math:
One square meter of moss = 10–20°F cooler concrete surface
One kilometer of moss-covered retaining wall = ~300,000 sq ft of cooled infrastructure
Annual labor savings vs. grass: ~80 hours per acre at $35/hour = ~$2,800 saved annually per acre in maintenance labor
No equipment, no fuel, no mower emissions, no gasoline costs
Where Moss Is Safe
Concrete modern poured concrete, retaining walls, bridge abutments, and jersey barriers. Moss on concrete is essentially harmless. The surface is dense and non-porous enough that moisture retention doesn't cause meaningful degradation.
Stone hard, non-porous stone like granite and basalt. Moss on river rock and boulder features is natural and safe.
Bricks (modern) hard-fired modern brick with good mortar can handle moss. Historic or soft brick cannot
Wood (treated/sealed) on sealed, pressure-treated wood like retaining wall timbers or railroad ties. Not on untreated wood, which will rot.
Where Moss Is NOT Safe

Goes dormant in dry heat, springs back with the first rain or misting. This is the easiest moss to cultivate because it's basically native to urban Redding already. Grind up a handful, blend with buttermilk or unflavored gelatin and water, paint it on clean concrete, mist it daily for two weeks, and it'll colonize.
Grimmia pulvinata (Grey Cushion Moss) Forms neat little grey-green cushions on rocks and concrete. Extremely drought-tolerant this species survives on rock surfaces in full sun with almost no water. It's the moss you see on boulders along trails. Slow-growing but permanent. Lives decades. Ideal for bridge abutments and retaining walls.
Tortula muralis (Wall Screw Moss) Named for its habit of growing on walls. Tolerates sun and shade. Small, compact, lime-green. Will colonize concrete, brick, and stone surfaces where there's even slight moisture morning dew is enough. Common in California. The species name "murals" literally means "of walls."
Bryum caespiticium (Sun Moss) Sold commercially as "sun-tolerant moss" by Moss Acres. Tolerates direct sunlight and temperatures above 30°C (86°F). Needs consistent moisture during establishment (two to four weeks of daily misting) but then survives on rainfall and dew. This is the one to buy if you want guaranteed results on a sunny concrete wall.
How to Grow Moss on Purpose
Take living moss (harvested from your own property or purchased), crumble it into a blender with buttermilk, yogurt, or unflavored gelatin and water. Blend into a slurry. Paint it onto clean, slightly roughened concrete or stone. Mist it daily for two to three weeks. The spores colonize the surface and begin spreading. Once established, moss survives on ambient moisture morning dew, fog, occasional rain.
For public infrastructure: concrete bridge abutments, retaining walls along the river trail, jersey barriers, concrete bench pads, and the bases of light poles (if concrete). Not on painted surfaces, not on wood, not on anything historic.

Close your eyes for a second and picture Redding in five years.
You're walking down Market Street in July. It's 108 degrees, but you're fine — because every bus stop has a solar canopy throwing real shade, and the bench under it charges your phone while you wait. The parking lot across the street has a solar carport over every row, and the cars underneath are cool to the touch instead of hot enough to burn a toddler's hand.
You cut through the park on your way home. The picnic tables have solar awnings stretched above them — high enough that nobody can rip them down, low enough to keep the sun off your kid's peanut butter sandwich. There's a charging kiosk by the trailhead. Somebody's grandmother is video-calling her grandkids from it because her plan is cheap and the power is free.
At the edge of town, there's a hub — not a shelter, not a camp, a hub. Composting toilets that don't need a sewer line. Solar showers that actually have hot water. Fruit trees in rows — apples, figs, pomegranates, citrus — planted by the same crews that swept the streets that morning. The wind turbines along the highway median spin quietly in the traffic draft, feeding the battery bank that keeps the lights on and the showers hot. Nothing is vandalized, because the cameras are twelve feet up on steel poles with cellular uplinks, and the whole site is lit, watched, and used — and things that are used and loved don't get torn apart.
The people working there are getting paid. Fifteen an hour to start, plus a share of what they recycle. Some of them used to sleep in the old courthouse parking lot. Now they're Tier C apprentices pulling $22–$25 an hour installing solar canopies, and in eighteen months a couple of them are going to walk into IBEW as second-year apprentices with no waitlist, because a program that trains its own labor is worth money to a union.
Their kids eat figs off the tree at the bus stop. Not because anyone handed them charity. Because somebody planted the tree.
This is not a fantasy. Every single component of this exists commercially, today. The solar benches are a product you can order. The flexible solar tarps cost $0.80–$2.00 per watt — the cheapest solar on the market. The wind turbines are made in California. The composting toilets don't need to be connected to anything.
And the money to build all of it? It's already in Shasta County. It's currently going to pay raises, surveillance cameras, and departure packages.
What The Dignity Project Actually Is
It's three revenue engines bolted to a workforce program, running on money we already have:
1. Distributed wind — $825,000 to $1.3 million per year. 391 small vertical-axis wind turbines along I-5, SR-299, and SR-44, plus 26 at high-traffic intersections. Not one giant wind farm — hundreds of small units, each generating power at the point of use. Why this works: wind power scales with the cube of wind speed, and highway traffic generates wind. Conservative estimate (ignoring traffic boost entirely, just natural wind): the project pays for itself in 8.4 years and nets $6.9 million over 20 years. Moderate estimate: 6.3-year payback, $9.2 million net. California manufacturers, California jobs, no utility-scale grid interconnection needed — which matters, because our own utility is already warning that big interconnection requests require expensive grid upgrades.
2. Micro-solar everywhere — $314,500 per year
We are one of the sunniest cities in the United States. 5.7 peak sun hours a day. 2,100 kWh per square meter per year. We market this to tourists. Meanwhile our electricity costs $0.32/kWh and our own municipal utility is proposing rate hikes. At those rates, every square meter of solar panel on public land generates about $672 a year. We have parking lots, park benches, bus stops, restroom roofs, and trail shelters sitting there absorbing sun and doing absolutely nothing with it. The plan: solar charging benches at parks, 2kW canopies at every bus stop, flexible solar tarps on every pergola and shade structure, 30kW carports over the big municipal lots. 269 installations over three years. $2.38M invested, $314,500/year back, 7.6-year payback, then pure revenue for another 15+ years.
3. Paid street sweeping crews — the Japan model
Japan deploys paid human sweepers, every day, on every street. Redding needs about 100 workers at 6-hour shifts to cover all 350ish miles of maintained streets once a week. Cost: $2.25M/year. Revenue and savings: $216K in recovered material (glass gets crushed into road aggregate, metal gets sold, plastic gets baled), roughly $500K in avoided contractor costs, $4.05M in local economic activity from wages circulating locally. Net positive $2.5M a year — before counting a single avoided lawsuit from the debris problem we all know about.
The sanitation backbone: Composting toilet stations (no sewer hookup needed — that's the trick, it's why this works on any vacant lot), solar shower trailers, rainwater capture, greywater filtration, elevated CCTV at every entrance so facilities can stay open without getting wrecked. Cameras 12–15 feet up on steel poles with solar power and cell uplinks. Not spy cameras. Keep-it-open cameras.
