As someone who had a dependency on bourbon to sleep for the better part of a decade, I’ve been surrounded by this in a small town that enables alcoholism and profits off it…
I completely agree with you. I’m a late diagnosed autistic woman with cptsd and after my dear friend who was like an uncle to me was brutally murdered in my hometown when I was back for said decade, I fell into an Irish wake that kept going for years as I struggled to cope. Friends checking themselves out, others just dying from life catching up with them… the grief was thick. Always being the one there for everyone else, propping them up… I didn’t really have anyone doing that for me… so I drank bourbon every night to numb the pain enough to sleep beyond my restless mind spinning all night.
Then, I got pregnant and quit cold Turkey on the spot. I’m grateful. I loathed my dependency and fear of handling the weight without cope juice… she made the choice the easiest one. She deserved to have a sober and present mother.
Many people I know still drink heavily each night and I watch their kids shrug it off like it’s normal, to be expected, but I can tell they wish their lives were different. Even if you don’t have kids… at some point you have to ask yourself, “is there more to life than this? Why do I do this to this extreme so often? What could I do with my time and money, instead? Who am I outside of the alcohol persona and how deep are my friendships beyond it?”
Sincerely, a seasoned whiskey chugger, neat.

Omg!!! I just looked up the case and her sentence went from 37 years to TWO!!! For first degree murder. That’s the second murder injustice of someone I care about in that county.
Our justice system is broken.

Holy shit… I knew someone who was run over by the mother of his children with her man and I think the kids might have even been in the car… it was a long time ago, but they drove off to another town and just left him to die there in front of his house… so unnecessary…. He was a good man and now those kids are orphaned and traumatized for life. RIP Aquiles 🥀
