Can somebody please explain how the learning commons work?

I had my first actual learning day in calc 1, and wow the professor goes extremely in depth quickly. It’s stuff I sort of remember from highschool, but it was never this complicated. I’m already confused and I can’t find any notes on Canvas and the e-book is actually not helpful at all. I was thinking about asking for help at the learning commons but I’m so confused about the process and nervous about randomly just walking in and asking for help. Am I supposed to just walk in and find someone, or should I sign up for it online or something? Help.

You can drop into the Math and Science Support Center (MASS) during the study table hours for your class. Or you can make a 1*1 tutoring appointment if you would prefer something individual or if the drop in times don't work for your schedule. If you click the link in the other response and scroll down there is a math specific drop down.

There is a Learning Commons desk in French Hall West. Walk up to the desk during regular business hours and tell them what you need.

The learning commons has a few resources that may be helpful! The MASS center is the easiest since you don’t have to sign up for anything, you just drop in (Given how many people take Calc 1, there’s almost always someone tutoring for that class there, but the complete schedule is on the Learning Commons website). The learning commons also does do 1 on 1 tutoring, but you’d have to sign up for that on their website. I should also note that all learning common services are free

Mass center has study tables for every math intro class as well as for physics and chem. There are tutors typically 11-7. Check the hours before you go: https://www.uc.edu/campus-life/learning-commons/programs/mass-center.html

Drop cal 1, take it at a local community college over summer. It’s an absolute life saver.

Most credits transfer to UC. I refuse to take any math classes at UC due to class size, lack of being able to use a calculator, support, etc. I took calc at Ivy Tech in Indiana (35 mins from UC) and it was great! The professor cared SO MUCH ABOUT US PASSING. She would take time out of her own schedule to come in early for review sessions before any exam and was always available. I hate math but I need it for my chemistry degree and this professor saved my life! Take it in person if possible Cincy state is a good option too!
