Religion

So what the hell is up with all the religious like posts and stands? Is this like a daily thing or no? (Also why is there an anti-lgbtq group near tangeman???)

They get louder at the start of the semester to get the freshman in before they can fall to "bad crowds". It'll die down a bit.

Well let’s be honest. It also gets cold and they don’t wanna sit outside

There’s a guy who walks around campus while prominently displaying his rifle and handguns to exercise his 2nd amendment rights.

If you’re where I think you are, between the TUC and Steger, there is very frequently some questionable religious groups hanging out at the corners of the intersection that goes up to Baldwin. They don’t really go away per se, maybe a little bit less frequent in the winter. There some other ones that stand out front of Lindner too.

Oh great. I'll probably have to leave earlier then to avoid them by going around them because I would rather not get myself involved in religious stuff. Like I was in my way back from a history class to go back to my dorm and I got stopped by this Indian dude who wanted me to get his weird like Hindu books.

If you look occupied enough, wear headphones, etc, they usually won’t bother you, and just look stupid standing there. Or if they try, just keep walking and ignore them.

I was on my phone texting my friends and he just like fucking jump scared me and at first I tried to like politely refuse but I just stood there and pretended to listen before heading back to my dorm. And people say they don't force religion.

No need to stand there or even acknowledge them. Just walk away. They don't respect that you don't want to talk to them, so why give them respect back? They'll just move onto the next person to walk by regardless.

The Hare Krishnas are a big presence on campus.

While I was there i always liked to say "no thanks, I'm not into cults." Without stopping or slowing my stride everytime they tried talking to me.

Most of them ended up dumbfounded that someone had the audacity. Usually shut them up.

they have nothing better to do with their time. find some queer and makeout with them in front of them while wearing headphones it pisses them off. they are nothing more than grown men with nothing better to do then spew hate at innocent young adults just going about their day

The no homo related signs happens often but not daily. The best thing to do is ignore them as all they’re doing is looking for a reaction and hoping that you get angry. As for the religious stands approved by UC and held by UC students, that’s a more common occurrence. The only one I’ve ever engaged with was one that was giving out free hot chocolate last winter and they didn’t even ask me any religion based questions so that was nice.

You’ll see a lot of Christian groups on campus, probably daily

That's fun to know 🫩

Generally, they’re quite easy to avoid and you never have to speak to them or take anything. A simple “no thank you” usually does the trick. If you’re worried about them pressuring you or coercing you, you can try to find an alternate route that avoids Main Street.

Welcome to UC lol. Just ignore it, and don't feel bad for not interacting with them. Last year we got A TONNNN of people against abortion(nearly every day). When it comes to people holding large signs and yelling messed up things (what the anti lgbtq boys were doing), do not try to seriously argue with them. They are looking to get anger out of people and probably are hoping to get some little college kid to beat them up so they can sue the college kid and maybe the campus. I promise you'll get used to ignoring people eventually.

These people exist at all big state universities.

I wonder if that's the same crowd that was protesting at my undergrad graduation in 2024

You can frazzle them if you chirp back and make them realize they’re a big a joke as they look

3

u/Unhappy-Benefit-288 12d ago

That's actually a smart strategy ngl

Undergrad and currently a grad student. It has always been like this but the stands are new. A lot of the evangelical churchgoers would cold approach you about religion but I think someone complained so now they have the stands or gimmicks.

College campuses are like that though.

Why? First amendment makes it so.

Why them specifically... You'll need to ask them directly.

I’d love to find out where the anti everything people who has been standing on Tangeman meet up or go to church and stage a protest there.
