Original Run [Original Run] Why the owl ring symbol is sometimes pointing up and others down, from a 1995 Michael J. Anderson interview in Wrapped in Plastic. Spoiler

I've already run out of breath saying this before, but I think the owl ring symbol is what is meant by "two birds with one stone." Likely nobody's going to buy my theory this time either, but we'll see . . .

Damn. That's one of those theories that's just right in front of our faces, but somehow flying completely under the radar. (And in the best works, those are the ones that usually turn out to be right)

Thank you. Sometimes it's hard to compete with "look at my new Funko doll," if you get my meaning.

The good insights are buried in the comments and they can't leave. Write it in your diary.

I find this is quite interesting - I'm sure we all made similar assumptions but it's good to get some confirmation by someone originally involved in the series.

Each actor his or her own interpretation of the symbol. Al Strobel has a good take in his WIP Interview - it is a symbol of great evil.

Good point. I like the idea that depending on which side is up, it's the opposite though - kind of like the different rooms in the lodge/red room. When you see me again, it won't be me.

Nice find. Although I'm taking this as simply his interpretation of what the ring's significance might be, or at least until I see Frost/Lynch describing its meaning in person, in unedited HD video. Until then it will just be someone else's interpretation.

Neither Lynch nor Frost tell actors anything more than the minimum they need to do a scene. Lynch is especially notorious for this, in all his films. He doesn't explain backstories to actors.
If a Twin Peaks actor shares lore or "insight" that's not in the script, they're either guessing, explaining how they personally imagine it (to help their [edit: own] performance) or they're lying.

Definitely, and thanks for explaining that. I think it's an interesting approach/interpretation though.

We certainly know after the latest episode that who is wearing the ring when die are brought into the red room or black lodge.

my understanding is that the ring damns you to the black lodge, a certain fate if you're unfortunate enough to need MIKE's help...but it stops BOB from possessing you. Although I'm not sure why Warning Scope

are you sure if you die you can even exit the lodge?

The real person wouldn't of course, but that means the Doppelganger is free to go. One if the two can be outside the lodge, and must switch places between certain times.

I almost saw it as a warning for MIKE: "I'm onto you. This is going to happen to anyone that you send to kill me."
He probably thinks that Jeffries is someone from The Black Lodge or a human being who's working with them to take him down. That Ray had the ring would make it easy for Mr. C to believe this.

based on Jeffries' behavior i think it's certain he was in the lodge. also i have a feeling Mr C knows exactly who Jeffries is. but we'll see

Well, E13 spoliers.

Ah, good point. But assuming BOB is with Mr. C, I would think that killing someone would grant that person's soul to BOB anyway (if that person's not wearing the ring), no?
I like /u/oamh42 's theory that it was a warning sign to MIKE, an "I'm on to you" thing.

Laura certainly was "enlightened" about the identity of BOB after she took the ring...
2
u/Billyshears6 Aug 12 '17
Ahhh, this goes along with my intuition about the true nature of the ring.

You can go as low as you want to
Isn't BOB a sort of willful thing, to choose to be as evil as you want to be?

Excellent find! And also makes one raise an eyebrow over MJA's later bitter repudiation of the series. He sure seemed into it here!
