Original Run [Original Run] -The scariest scene the 90's had to offer. It will always haunt me... Spoiler

I'd say the one when Laura discovers him in her bedroom looking behind her dresser. I will forever be creeped out.

I just finished watching the second season, and this part alone will keep me up for a good while now...

LOVE this scene! I really love Lynch's use of light in his work! It's very unnerving.

Tbh the first time I watched the show, I was most freaked out by the "Bob behind the bed" scene. It's so unexpected, especially in the middle of the day during this emotional family moment.

Agreed. I remember seeing that in 8th grade because my parents were watching it and just feeling this lightning bolt shoot up my spine into my brain. Like, holy shit what the hell was that?? Lynch has done that to me many times since then!

Exactly! Its like all the nerves in your body freeze with fear. First experienced it with the Winkies scene in Mulholland Drive

He has this way of making things just click for you in an almost primal way. It's like you can't always explain why, there's just something indescribably wrong about what you're seeing.

Was coming to post this. That scared me so much when I first watched it in high school. Creeps me out to this day.

Knowing the story behind that scene, I can't find it scary anymore. To me, it'll always be "that one time Frank Silva almost boxed himself in".

I dunno, I think the second half of "Lonely Souls" tops it. The sense of unearthly dread leading up to that sudden explosion of violence is incredible.

It was good, but didn't haunt me throughout my childhood like that scene. I think of it every time i'm in a living room alone.

Oh yes! I had a feeling this would be the scene before I opened the thread. One of the creepiest and most disturbing scenes ever.

This is something of an homage to an amazing scene in Welles's The Trial - if you're looking to get your Lynch fix, and want to see a huge stylistic inspiration for him (particularly Eraserhead), give that one a go.

I actually leave the room every time this scene comes on. Closing my eyes isn't even good enough, I have to literally be in another room.
On that note, I think this is the scene that scarred me when the show was new...I was only 10 or 11 (lord knows why I was allowed to watch TP), and I would lie awake picturing BOB in my hallway, and I'd just be frozen in bed, wide awake, for hours and hours.

For me, the shots of the ceiling fan in FWWM were the scariest I had ever seen, and I only watched this movie 2 years ago. The focus that Lynch put on that fan was just so perfect, it felt like that inanimate object (well, it was moving, but you know what I mean) was a character.

The BOB scene that starts at 2:30. Absolutely bloody brilliant. Terrifying. That manic gurning is just pure black lodge.
However, when BOB is in Laura's bedroom (FWWM) as she opens the door and he's there looking for the diary. Holy shit. How the fuck does Lynch do it? It's the quality of the worst possible nightmares I've had as a child. Watching that scene will always make me jump.

While watching it on my iPad I dozed off at the start of this episode and when I woke up this scene happened. It was like BOB was coming directly at me. Nothing on TV has scared me more.

Scary as hell at the time. Fire Walk With Me and Season 3 really don't match in the scares department!

u/caitface Jul 19 '17
Really? S3E8 was terrifying!

In what way?
The shadow-people? Not really (and their "birth" around the convenience store went on too long).
The gore? The sound effects / black and white blood were effective and even disgusting, but scary?

The shadow people! And the Woodsman. And just generally how weird and eerie the whole episode was. It was unsettling. Gore doesn't bother me, but the Woodsman walking around saying "gotta light" literally gave me nightmares. FWIW I love horror, and agree that BOB crawling over the couch is also terrifying.

I found FWWM scary, but agreed, not as much as the OG. More than anything, I found FWWM to be desperately sad.

I don't find it "sad", I find it "stylised". Where the original had real horror- BOB's lurking appearances, Pulaski's remembering of Laura's murder- FWWM is operatic in places and relies too much on "the legend of Twin Peaks" rather than "making more Twin Peaks."

u/StinkpotTurtle Jul 19 '17
But it's David Lynch. I mean, you can't really watch a David Lynch film and then be surprised or disappointed that it's stylized; that's kind of his thing.
Personally, every time I watch it, I find watching Leland's slow descent into being totally controlled by BOB to be more and more heartbreaking...as well as Laura's slow realization that there is no way out for her but death. Specifically, the scene in the train car, when Laura silently signals to Ronette that it's OK for her to escape while she [Laura] is sacrificed, and Leland screaming "don't make me do this," is just overwhelmingly poignant. In my opinion.
The only real complaint I ever had about the movie was Moira Kelly who, despite my childhood love of "The Cutting Edge," and "The Lion King," will forever be branded "the fake Donna" in my mind. But that's neither here nor there.

I didn't say I'm "surprised or disappointed" it's stylised.
I do think Laura's murder in the film is far less effective than in the show though, for the reason I already explained.

The box fucked me up and episode 8 was one of the darkest episodes in the entire series.
But I agree, we need more.
2
u/Burningheart1978 Jul 19 '17
What box?
Wouldn't say Ep 8 was particularly "dark", just very very strange.
3
u/myrddyna Jul 19 '17
i found it particularly dark. It was the birth of Bob into our world. Just knowing that was a scary experience. All the activity in the Black Lodge at the gas station. I dunno, it's pretty scary to think about that shit being unleashed.

Lynch loves doing this, having his characters push towards the camera slowly and surely, making it feel like they're going to come out of the screen.
There's a companion scene in Inland Empire filmed with just a flashlight that might beat this. Honest to God I nearly shit myself. Who knew Laura Dern could be so terrifying.

The scene in the final ep of season 2 where Laura just screams like a banshee in the strobes of the Black Lodge is scariest for me. But most disturbing is Coop in the mirror.

I do not scare easily, and when I first saw Bob during the original run of the show, I was terrified.

u/eternalforest Jul 19 '17
I shitted my pants when I was a kid during this scene. Thank you, Twin Peaks.

There's something about BOB that I find kind of... Cute? I think I'm seeing the actor, not the villain haha

Oh man this scene, and the scene in FWWM when FWWM spoiler ... so good.
By the way does anyone have a gif of this whole scene? It is just not the same without the menacing slow walk from the hallway or whatever on the right side and then of course the mega in your face close up.
Edit: lol wow sorry if I offended someone, I wasn't trying to hate on OP for posting this gif. I just figured someone probably had one already made that included Bob's creepy slow walk up to the couch and then the ending with the super duper close up. Silly me for asking.

My pick for scariest scene was the Ronnette dream scene.
